A serious look at Mauricio Pochettino

Scoring goals is always better than being the ‘better’ side and this is where I think your current team excels when under pressure. It’s a fantastic trait to have as a team and it could well lead to success.
 
City aren't great shakes defensively so scoring 3 at their patch isn't the most miraculous thing ever. But beating them over 2 legs is something Spurs should be extremely proud of. It will be a bad feck up if Spurs fail to finish 3rd this year.

I know it's not the same thing, but we got 4-4 home and away with more away goals last season in the league. I'd say that City were comfortably better last season as well, because they had a fit and firing De Bruyne who was on another planet.

Spot on lad. Ye scored 3 away goals against them, deserved to go through, just. And the fact that they have spent billions unfairly while ye have spent nothing is incredible and a victory for the game itself.

That was a silly yellow card but if you keep it a close game going into the second leg, you have more than a good chance of going through. However, I would say Ajax have been playing fantastic football so it’s a tough task (as the CL semis should be!).

Personally, I think it’ll be more down to fitness and how you cope with their unbelievable movement and confidence in each other. On the other hand, they are a very young team and it could go down to which team handles the pressure of the occasion, and here I see your boys having a slight advantage.
 
Tbf even putting aside all the talk of whether or not he was right for us/hes done a good job/should he have won a trophy, I did always get the impression with him that he just wants to stay at Spurs long term or eventually go to Madrid/Barca one day, but I have my doubts he wouldve left spurs for United anyway.

I had a look and you have real banana skins in Bournemouth away with visits by Everton and West Ham. They're games you can't really take your eyes off of.
From a United point of view I think if we beat Everton and City over the next week then we'll win the rest. It's a modern football curse that it feels like you're in a league title race when you could be joint fourth this weekend. It doesn't make sense!!

Yea, the Manchester city team then wasn’t as good as the current one. Which is why I stated, in form and competitive environment in my post. If Hodgson was playing in this environment, no way they will score three let alone 1.

True. If we beat Ajax, if, I can’t see us beating Barca or the dippers tbh. While the CL adventure is nice, not making top four would be very harmful, modern football is sad.

It's an encouraging example of how good players can be found in unlikely places. It's the same with Liverpool: Mane and Van Dijk from Southamption; Winajldum from Newcastle; Robertson from Hull, etc.
 
One of my biggest problems about Pochettino was that he seemed to like the Jose Mourinho type striker.

I just can't handle the Lukaku's, the Higuains, the Jansens, the Llorentes or even a modern day Drogba - I feel like football has moved on from a traditional number 9.

Whilst Harry Kane is an Amazing player - If pochettino looks in to playing a striker like Son upfront more then I'm starting to like him even more.

We are then left with a squad that the next manager will deem incompetent and be in this constant phase of rebuilding.

Woodward and the Glazer's shouldn't have hired a manager until a DOF was appointed.

We are in dire need of a rebuilding job, that much is obvious. Another obvious thing is that we have some talented players in the squad but we can't get a fine tune out of them.

And there is a manager in the PL who has been doing these two things in England, right in front of our eyes, since 2013. There are no guarantees in football, two CL winners who failed are enough proof of that, but according to some United fans on the Caf, Poch seemed to be a very plausible appointment.

Sometimes teams go through inevitable dips in form. Pochettino did have that fairly dire five game run but his quality as a manager is rather self-evident.
 
Well done Spurs and Pochettino. Terrific achievement to make the champions League semi finals and knock a vastly superior squad out in the process. They should be proud of how far they've come despite Levy imposing a transfer ban because spending money is evil.

Ajax Vs Spurs will be great. Two teams nobody expected to make it this far.

The Llorente-Sissoko sub was one of the worst decisions i've seen from any coach, ever. I'm that serious about it.

They were creating chances and playing well. By putting Alli in midfield, they instantly became vulnerable, Son had to play much further from goal by going to wing, thus losing their main attacking threat, and Llorente couldn't control any hoof ball, putting them against the walls. They lost their attack, midfield and thus defense in 1 substitution. Awful, awful.

I think the sub was more out of necessity, not because Pochettino wanted to. They are literally down to running out academy under 18 players as their midfielders because of zero investment by the club. Dier, injured, Winks, injured, Wanyama just coming back from injury, looks well off the pace once the game goes past 60mins. Sissoko now injured.

So you have two options run out some under 18 academy junior as one of your two midfielders or drop Alli back into that space.

Pochettino brought on Llorente who ended up winning the game for them, admittedly in a very flukey way. Imagine the grilling Pochettino would get on here had he ran out some 18 y/o player who would look way out of his depth and be pretty much a passenger in a game of this magnitutde.
 
Good thing we signed Ole on a permanent deal, because after last night's performance Levy would rather chop off his left arm than let Pochettino come to us

Ok fair enough, I really don't have time to pay close attention to Spurs, so I didn't know they didn't have a CM to put in. Its still a bad decision in my books but I understand it better.
 
I agree though, whenever Alli drops deeper into midfield he just makes things worse for his team.
 
Poch is obviously a far better manager than Ole at this stage. No one in world football would suggest otherwise other than a few deluded United fans. But we have made our bed with Ole and now we'll have to lie in it.
