Champions League Semi Finals (30th April - 8th May)

@GlastonSpur.

Why are a team with less net spend beating you?

Lots of missing players from our 1st XI, Ajax with a week's rest and in a single game of football anything can happen.

Why are United, with a massive net spend, likely destined to play in the EL next season?

Missed your edit, so that since-edited post is meaningless

Anyways, yeah, of fecking course they'd have been better off with Kane. My point is Llorente is a good player, who had a good game and was instrumental to spurs even being in the game after the first half hour and on

Llorente was fecking awful and his lack of pace / threat allowed Ajax to press up. fecking Blind was winning high balls off him.

With Sissoko and Son playing the full 90 in Amsterdam, this should be a hell of a second leg.

Think Spurs would create more problems to Liverpool than Ajax.

Ajax and Barca would be far better to watch.

We're still in this tie.

Ajax are overrated. We got at them badly in that second half, and if players like Kane and Son were on the pitch I would back us to grab a couple.

Sissoko in from the start in the return leg and Son back leading the line and we will look far more threatening, easily capable of scoring a few against a shaky backline.

Tonight we had zero quality in the final third with Llorente leading the line. We'll obviously have to play a hell of a lot better to come in to it, but we are capable of that. Some of the deliveries by our fullbacks were criminal and Alli/Eriksen were totally below par.

Ajax overrated? Shaky backline? You didn't make their keeper make a save all game how exactly do they have a shaky backline? De Ligt is wanted by everyone and Blind completely nullified everything you had tonight. Shaky backline  wishful thinking at its best

Overrated how?

Why do you need to be bitter for?

Overrated by people on here who act like they're prime Barcelona.

They're good but not incredible, City are a far better side and would have dicked us in to oblivion over the two legs had we been forced to use this lineup from the start.

This isnt over by a long shot. Dutch pundits are eviscerating that Ajax second half performance.

We're auch a silly country sometimes.

Yet another away victory in the UCL knockout stage by Ajax. Most impressive.

Spurs are nearly out. Make no mistake. Can't see them scoring 2 in Amsterdam. Ajax will most likely outplay them. 1-0, 1-1 or 2-1.

The abscenes of Kane and Son were just too much for them. A bit unfair, but hey, injuries have always been a key element in football. When your Top CF Sub is Llorente, you know you're fecked.

You are right but it worked. We had little other options out there.

You won probably 3/4 of the 2nd balls from aerial duels. Almost every physical duel ended up with a deflection going to a Spurs player. Whatever you did, it worked. All you needed was some quality at the end, I guess.

They're behind so the losing 4-3 tactic won't work this time.

They just need the first goal like Man. United got in Paris. Got behind and they still need two but it will feel mentally probably beyond them.

Yeah I meant like outscore them by two or something, 1-3, 2-4. But scoring first is essential.

1-0 works in regards to Spurs still being in the game and deciding to rest all the better players this weekend. As long as Spurs have hope they could be distracted.

Clutching at straws of course.

We didn't force them to make a save because our attackers were absolute fecking garbage for feck sake.

They looked in trouble whenever Lucas had opportunities to run at them and looked dodgy on set pieces, with Llorente having two golden opportunities he messed up.

Our attacking play/delivery from wide areas was awful all game so yes, we weren't able to get many shots off. If we can improve (big time) in that respect and bring in a world class attacker like Son instead of Llorente, we would be far more dangerous going forward.

They are.

People creamed over them all game when really they just had an explosive 30 minutes where yeah, they were incredible. After that they were average to poor and we should have scored at least one from a set piece.

They're a good, energetic side but whoever gets them in the final (if they progress vs us) will win comfortable. Had we had more firepower tonight I think it's a totally different game.

They took advantage of our missing players and the tactical error Poch made by starting with 3atb. Soon as we shifted and Sissoko came on we had the better of proceedings but were unable to do feck all because Llorente/Lucas is the least threatening attacking duo ever.

Average to poor yet still had more possession and should have scored when they hit the post which was a better chance (and better football) than Spurs mustered all game

Fecking hell youre running Glaston close with your rubbish these days

Tie isn't over by a long shot though... We've seen what teams have been capable away from home in the Champions League.

Blah blah everyone keeps mentioning City.
They got knocked out by you.

Ajax beat Madrid and Juve. They are not overrated. They are rated where they are. Nobody said they prime Barcelona, so you making stuff up. No need to be bitter.

Away from home champions league semi final is going to be tough. They did the job with a decent performance and got the job done 1-0 away from home.

Come on Gaston, it's not impossible that Spurs find themselves doing exactly that next season.

This competition definitely favours the more historical clubs as it's proved time and time again now. Hope Ajax win it. They deserve it and hate the both teams in the other draw. Also don't want anyone of Barcelona/Liverpool to get their 6th CL either.

The tie isn't over yet ... so I wouldn't count all your chickens just yet.

Like you did when you pronounced PSG were knocking us out you mean? Guess you learning something is a smidge of personal development though so well done

Hahaha, omfg. You got at them badly in the second half resulting in 1 shots on goal and of course zero goals.

Ajax deserve to REACH THIS UCL's final more than any club this season. They started there CL campaign in fecking July! Have not lost away from home at all this CL and in the course of 2 legs have bested every single team they have played. Remarkable.

There. Fixed it for ya. A final must be won, and usually is the hardest match of a season. Nobody "deserves to win" a final. Only winners win a final.

As long as Liverpool don't win it. Not too fussed about Ajax, Spurs or Barcalona winning it

Tie isn't over by a long shot though... We've seen what teams have been capable away from home in the Champions League.

Tottenham scored once away at Inter
Scored twice away to PSV
Scored once away to Barcelona
Scored once away to Dortmund
Scored three away to City

Anyone ruling them out at this stage are being blindsided a bit. They're decent away from home in the CL this season, they've scored in every game.

Jesus christ.

We had more shots and genuine chances that second half than they did. We struggled to create any genuine opportunities because we had no decent strikers on the pitch, how much fecking clearer can that be for you?

You're not going to run a team ragged with Llorente leading the line. Son will be an entirely different story and I saw a backline that can be got at with a genuine quality striker in and around the box, why are you so insistent on denying that?

We put in a terrible performance tonight (eriksen/alli/trippier/rose particularly disappointing) and still managed to have a lot of control in the second half and got in to some good positions, the quality was just missing. All I've said is that if we can change that round and if Son can put in a Cityesque performance where he clutches for us, we're still in the tie.

To only lose that 1 nil is a result on the back of what was a woeful first half performance. We could have lost that 2 or 3 nil it was that bad. I think we matched them in the second half and with Son back next game we have a chance of getting a result there. I'm relieved rather than disappointed.

Good assessment, sounds sensible.

Spurs will have no chance but to play back 4 anway so will be more attacking, I presume there's next to no chance Vertonghen will be playing next week as concussion is usually 10 day sit out isn't it?

@SquishyMcSquish @InLevyITrust @balaks

Thanks for the feedback guys, greatly appreciated. I really thought he had it all but I'm becoming more unconvinced the more I see him.

He is completely lacking in confidence at the moment so the swagger and tricks he had a year ago are either now gone or not coming off at all. I think thats the biggest thing and it all started with that injury. Dont think he is fully fit and it's had a big impact on the kid.

They're a dirty team as well. Multiple yellow cards tonight and Blind 100% should have got one but somehow avoided it despite making 3-4 fouls.

And Spurs are a nice clean team who don’t have a dirty side to them at all.

You can say most the European champions over the years have had some dirty side to them.

I'm not denying on paper you'll be a bigger threat with Son, what I take exception with is your inability to admit you were outplayed tonight and even in the second half when Ajax in your words were poor to average still played better football and had better chances than Spurs

Calling them overrated and poor to average is just you being bitter, they were a class above Spurs tonight

@SquishyMcSquish You are wrong on that one mate, Ajax is far from "overrated" They went past the likes of fecking Madrid and Juve, they deserve big credit for that and from the looks of it they will go past you lot as well even though I definitely havn't counted you out but you have a tough task ahead.

Worried about Vertonghen - was scary to see him going off like that and was terrible timing as he had just moved to left back and he is top class in that position with his delivery (much better than Rose). Hope he can make the next game because he is a huge loss if not. I think we have to go for it next game, back 4 - be physical in midfield and hope Eriksen and Son get on the ball.

Like you did when you pronounced PSG were knocking us out you mean? Guess you learning something is a smidge of personal development though so well done

You got lucky against PSG with VAR, but then got dumped out 4 - 0 next round anyhow. At least Spurs are still in the CL, with still a chance of reaching the final.

You'll likely have plenty of opportunities for personal development next season ... away to some team in Khasakstan on a Thursday evening.
