Internationals June (Euro Qualifiers + Nations League Finals)

Carragher's analysis of Stones is hilarious

"Get your arms round him!"

Meanwhile the caf is saying someday Smalling might, possibly, eventually give away a penalty for holding

Stones and Barkley barely have any valuable experience at that level... you can call it a friendly now but if England won it, they'd have returned as heroes. 53 years without a trophy, it's unforgivable to throw away the chance of winning one like this.

Trust me no one here gives a shit about this, everyone knows it’s just a rebadged set of friendlies.

Special shout-out to my man Denzel Dumfries. People always feel the need to ridicule him for not being particularly good at playing football. But he himself is well aware that he's not a good footballer, aged 18 he was still playing for an amateur team. He's got more heart and soul than pretty any other player out there tonight though.

Looked like he was heading for a red in the first half. Turned it round in the second and was always an option.

I would even agree that they performed well in the latest WC. Our set piece success and great draw hugely flattered us. No one can argue that our football was by any means great. We didn't outplay Colombia. We barely outplayed Sweden. We certainly didn't outplay Croatia. Can you argue that we fought well and had heart? sure, but there's no reasonable argument for England's general footballing performance in the WC.

Southgate is a bang average manager (as we all knew when he was appointed) but a likeable fellow so under him we'll be vaguely competent but won't win anything. I said this after the WC.

But nobody cracked under pressure, that wasn't what happened. Stones is just a tit and Barkley isn't very good.

If Portugal and Holland qualify directly for the euros it gives you a play off ticket if you dont though.

No it doesn't, as group winners England already have that play off ticket. The playoff spots go to all the winners of Groups A-D should they need them, if not then the playoff place gets handed to the highest ranked team that failed to qualify for the Euros.

That's how it always is when you lose. The Europa League was a classic for this for years.

Did you watch how many England fans traveled? Most of the population has never seen England win a trophy in their lives but they wouldn't care about it? Really? England aren't successful enough to not care.

And yet here we are not giving a feck. England fans will use any excuse to smash up some sunny country.

The Europa League is still shit and pointless btw, might start caring in the final and only then if CL is on the line, that's about it.

Classic England , blow up when in a good position.
He didn’t have his best game tonight but you can see De Ligt is going to be some player.

Apart from that foul he was excellent mostly. Few very important tackles and scored the equalizer.

You represent all England fans now? Clearly loads give a feck.

You support Tottenham and England. If you're under 30 all of your life you've seen Tottenham win a League Cup and a grand total of 0 other trophies yet you don't give a shit about this or winning the Europa League? What the actual feck... that's some special kind of arrogance.

This current Dutch team is so frustrating, because they will never win anything substantial like a EC or a WC. They are that level in defense and midfield, except maybe one or two positions, but the attack consists of players who wouldn't even play at United. United I tell you! ;)

Personally I rate the tournament and think it will grow in prestige but people aren’t really talking about it much here, certainly not where I am. The pieces on the radio I heard today were mostly trying to explain what it actually is.

So many. The nation is now in mourning, what will we do.

Yeah that's about the long and short of it. Can not muster two fecks.

It's a new tournament, that's normal especially with England reaching a WC semifinal last year. If England had won it people would have cared about it though.

England fans travel all the time even to friendlies. This was totally different to the World Cup, no one talking about it at work, most people didn’t even know it was on.

Sure there would be people happy if we had one but to say they would have been treated as heroes is way off the mark.

Of course it's nowhere near the same as the World Cup... there's some grey area between the biggest tournament in the sport and complete irrelevancy though.

Our midfield is solid, but lacks creativity. If only Ziyech was born a Dutch man.

Thank you, Daley's dad:mad:

Neville asked where the progress has been made with Southgate, answers a list of names of players. Nothing to do with Southgate

Walker and Stones plays like rubbish for England, but Pep makes them look like world class players. Sterling much better for City too.
I guess seeing how all City players are much worse for the national teams (yes even Aguero and De bruyne when they play) it shows how bloody good he is as a manager to get players to perform.
With our players though it is the other way around. Rashford and Lingard look pretty much at the same level as the other attackers in England, but play like crap for us.

I guess it tells me we really need a world class manager and that it would do much more than just adding players. Still it is hard for me to understand how this is the case. Are we just as a team so clueless together tactically or it is mental? Or is just Pep at one level above other in terms of directing his players with tactics that make them look much better than they are?

Klopp also has similar effect for his players that he makes them better. Although Van Dijk and many others do perform very well for the national teams too.

I was amazed at the English support at this game... Nations League seems to be pretty big in England, or is it just about a short holiday in the Portuguese sun getting drunk and visiting a game?

A football fan that doesn't care about his team or country winning trophies, this is a new one. You're proud of it but it honestly seems more like a coping mechanism than anything else.

Pickford 7/10

Walker 1/10
Stones 0/10
Maguire 1/10
Chilwell 5/10

Rice 4/10
Delph 5/10
Barkley 3/10

Sancho 5/10
Rashford 6/10
Sterling 6/10

Subs - Kane 3/10, Lingard 6/10, Henderson N/A

Not supporting your country is a disgrace to be fair mate. You would never see this in France or Germany or Brazil or Argentina. I suppose that mentality is why we fail. England have become a very unpatriotic nation though, hell, half the country thinks the flag is racist

It’s really not that big here in the grand scheme of things, England fans always travel well even to friendlies and being in an attractive location always helps

 I spent the entire CL final making my voice hoarse, every world cup game hiding behind the sofa and I even give a feck about the FA/league cup.

I just don't give a shit about the Nations League, or at least not much of a shit .. which seems to be where most England fans are at. It's fine and I would like to have won it, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over losing a glorified friendly tournament set weeks after the season, and a week after a CL final.

As for the Europa League, the countless games set in various spots around feck knows where in Europe put me off. It's just all a bit shit, the final this year was so Europa League. The oh we're not quite good enough but still quite ok tournament.

I’m gutted, especially because of the farcical way which we lost. We were too negative after taking the lead, just like against Croatia. We had the disallowed goal to give us hope which was then crushed. Our weak midfield lost control of the game, just like against Croatia. Ultimately though an absurd mistake from Stones threw the game away. It was typically England.

I hope to God that Southgate puts out a serious team against Switzerland to regain some dignity. Drop Stones and Walker and let’s see what TAA and Gomez can do.

It’s more about the latter. The tournament hasn’t caught the imagination in the mainstream yet. England is the best supported international team in the world by average attendance and I think by a distance. Plus you have the fact that Portugal is such a popular holiday destination. Unfortunately this means that a lot of yob and hooligan types have travelled too.

Yeah but the Dutch fans travel well too, but not here, not as the English. It's a different crowd though. The Dutch club teams have the hardcore away crowds, but not the national team, they have the carnival crowd. Apparently this game didn't appeal to them as much as the English fans.

Pile of shit team selection, negative subs, individual mistakes. Classic England Semi final.
Yep, add "an inept manager" to that list. Southgate disapoints again.

He should have started with TAA, Henderson and Gomez/Keane over Stones, Delph and Walker. Although with his starting 11 he tried his best. Rashford out with an injury so Kane on was logical even if Wilson could have been picked instead.
Lingard for Sancho worked out well and improved England. Alli and Henderson into the midfield made sense too. Walker and Stones should have been off though, but he probably wanted to make more attacking subs.

Overall England gifted Holland so many chances and should have been smashed in the first 90 minutes against proper strikers. Had Holland had Messi/Ronaldo they would have scored 4-5 goals probably (granted they might not have pressed as well as Depay did).
Southgates idea to not pick Smalling for Stones and maguires passing ability looks insane. They tried to play it out from the back, but gifted 5-6 great counter attacks from it and that gave Holland two goals in the end. Stones also failed to mark De ligt well on the first goal.

Shambles in extra time, don't know why Southgate has moved away from the back 3, it works better with the players we have and we don't need to be using more CM's given it's the weakest area in the squad.

The phenomenal luck England and Sir Southgate had with their fixtures list had to end eventually.

Back to earth with a bang.
