WWC19 | Final: USA v Netherlands

No, it's correct, it just disallows a lot of goals nowadays for being a boot's distance offside. Then you have the handballs that get slowed down to become penalties. Makes the game more boring imo.
Which is correct

I don't really understand the problem.

I dislike Var if I'm being honest, games becoming a game of tiny margins rather than actual moments. The random handballs are the worst.
Aye the current handball rules are the worst. I quite liked the “unnatural” position bit. VAR could have been used to try and get more consistency in that. But now it’s a penalty whenever the ball strikes the hand it seems. No matter the position/intent.

1. They couldn't beat Panama to qualify for the last world cup. Huge improvement, I am overawed.

2. Maybe.

3. Someone literally said that in this thread. And you could predict almost any large country to win a world cup 'eventually'.

4. Maybe it will .. who knows? It's not ingrained in US culture like it is in Europe/South America, where football is king.

So bored of hearing from Americans 'we'll be a superpower at football soon!', sorry. Been happening forever. Actually do it.
Ok we lost to Panama? England didn't qualify to the Euro in 08. Netherland in the past 2 major tournament? Whats your point? It is obvious football is growing in America SUBSTANTIALLY and that bothers certain people (Particularly the English I dont know why).

Like I said if football became the main Sport in the United States tomorrow within 20 years they would be one of the top footballing nations. The talent pool here would be too big.
That won't happen which is why the process will be longer. But it will happen but people have to be Realistic.

Look at the woman game where it Is prioritized and they are so far ahead any other nation in that respect.

Am I imagining things or was there something about “has to be daylight between attacker & defender” in the offside rule once upon a time? :nervous:

Nope, was a rule up to about 2003. So much better in those times.

VAR will change the game so much & for the worse.

With these freeze frames how do you know EXACTLY when the ball is played?

Because you can see exactly the moment a player strikes the ball?

The offside calls are fine with VAR. It's the handballs they need to sort out.

That was was the best interpretation of the rule, also I’m pretty sure Van Nistlerooy use to attempt to exploit the rule by extending his arm outright to play himself onside.

It will never be the main sport though. It will always be basketball and baseball etc.

We'd have a solid handful of trophies too if we played in the fecking Gold Cup, mate.
No you wouldn't. You'd still find a way to lose to Mexico and USA and Costa Rica. Hell, in a semifinal i'd expect you'd find a way to lose to Haiti

Yet again a completely marginal call. VAR needs a 30cm margin of error, unless the cameras are perfectly in line it is still a guesstimate.

Would you say that about goal line technology?

What if United missed out on a league because of an offside goal, but it was 29cm? Even the clear and obvious phrase worlds for it. It is a clear and obvious mistake because offside is offside and it’s not a subjective call.

Wasn't VAR introduced to be used lightly to overturn obvious wrong decisions? Why is it used 20x a game for mm decisions?

Because that’s the way VAR was always going to go- goal celebrations won’t be the same again- you’ll never know if someone was a toe nail off in the build up

These American players diving around like a bunch of men

The first date I ever went on with my wife was to a sports bar to watch England lose to the USMNT at the World Cup.

There's no point giving him the time of day. He's never interested in actually conversing.

Yeah slight difference between losing to Croatia and not beating Panama. Just a bit. Growing so much, seriously has this been on repeat for US football fans for the last 50 years or so? It's all that gets said. On the rise. On the rise. On the rise... I'd look to the future too if we had Jozy Altidore leading the line, but come on. Change the record.

Yeah, it will happen. Ok.

Benefit for the striker should be when a ref watches in real time and isn't sure. It loses all meaning when you have VAR. You can't expect benefit for a striker that's offside on the evidence of VAR.

I personally think the rule should be changed. Having a foot offside is ridiculous. Only since VAR came in have we accepted that. It was always benefit of the striker.

US womens team have won a world cup you know

I mean, we could say that about England since 1966...
Folks from England hate the idea of the USA becoming a good footballing nation. Don't know why.

WC 2010 was the last time they played in a major tournament and you couldn't see a massive difference there.

VAR. Must be a pen!

Either way, it's incredible how much luck this US team is riding on this cup. First the non-existent penalty against Spain, and now this "offsides" goal.
