I haven't offered any advice though. Although my advice would be to take care, be vigilant and not let it take over your whole life. Spending all day constantly reading, worrying or posting about it in here isn't healthy. You can have plenty of time to do that if you get isolated and quarantined.

My advice. Try to enjoy today's game and cheer on our boys!
 
I've read about several people that have basically no symptoms. One case in Germany for example was the daughter of a physician who came back from an Italy trip. Only because her father is a physician they got tested (and positivitely so) yet both have no symptoms.

I wonder how many people are positive but don't even know it and think it's just a common flu.

This is why we desperately need a widely accessible, convenient, reliable, and quick testing kit to be made available as soon as possible, especially with any potential vaccine so far away. If we could vastly increase the amount of testing conducted throughout our communities, we’ll be able to control the spread so much better.

I don't know if it's a Western thing in itself but I do where I currently reside, we haven't been hit by the virus yet and so far people haven't displayed these selfish tendencies so who knows with time.

With older people, there is superadded difficulty in treating sepsis if there is delirium in the picture which often involves depriving liberty to treat which puts an enormous strain on families. What I can say though is there is general advice regarding this virus making immunocompromised and frail/elderly/patients with comorbidities more ill is based on calming general population. We have to triage appropriately. The panic buying is one thing but there are people actively going to GP practices as they are worried about the symptoms in addition to ignoring 111 advice because they want "treatment" and aren't happy with the conservative management approach due to paranoia. So from a public messaging point of view, pointing out that most people will be fine isn't to callously disregard those that won't be but to offer perspective so that we can make appropriate use of resources.

I know authorities do what they can in terms of reassuring the masses. I see more and more people casually dismissing the lives of the elderly as if they just don't matter anyway.

The more data the better for government response of course. However i think there's loads of people including some in here who wouldn't even isolate if they were positive "jUsT a fLU mAtE"

People like that should be charged the same way people with known stds still have unprotected sex.

Yes it is a bit impractical but if it makes people and businesses more conscious of personal hygiene I think it will have other long term effects.

The other day, one of our execs was down for a business review and had a bit of a kick-off that one of the soap dispensers (out of multiple) in the toilet wasn't full replenished.

If people can just be more conscious of washing their hands before eating etc and businesses are pressed more to provide adequate facilities (cleaner/replenished toilets) that can only be a good thing for public health.
 
The lack of regard towards the elderly and most vulnerable is the most potentially unsettling part of this I find. Some people under the age of 50 can say ‘yeah well it’s only a flu so i shouldn’t worry about it’ and my reaction is ‘do you have elderly parents/grandparents or friends that have them? Can you imagine how devastated you or your friends would be if those people suddenly died from this?’

Not sure how. The team he played for, who didnt know he was tested was Hanover fc and they played coagh United fc.

This 100%. I think it is in part a coping mechanism.

I don't think we take the flu seriously enough either.

I'm suddenly very conscious that most of my regular "less than a metre or so" contacts are in the risk categories. I run computer/internet sessions for my local community centre - most of my students are over 70 or they're middle aged with comorbidities. Indeed, as the centre is volunteer run, most of the staff there are retired - many in their 70s, others retired early for health reasons. Most of my immediate family/friends are in one or more risk category.

For me, my age raises my risk level but not to a point where I feel I need to stop doing things for my own safety. However, for the safety of the people close to me? I'm conscious that I could be a hazard. At any rate this may be my last trip to Old Trafford this season, and that I'll have my little bottle of sanitiser in my pocket, but that I might be leaving early if anyone looks feverish or is coughing in my area. Not enough? It's hard to know - I was in Tescos yesterday and the community centre the day before.

Respect for the elderly is mostly an Eastern or 'less civilized society' thing. Or for religion practicing nuts. Modern societies, especially in the West, live a more advanced Logan's Run lifestyle. That's just my opinion as someone living in the West his whole life while being a religious nut from the East. :angel:

Wouldn't be surprised if some people only found out their grandparents were dead during their annual (Christmas) phone calls to check up on them.

Of the 25 cases so far in Portugal, 9 can be accurately traced to the same person, who came back from Italy days ago. "Light" social contacts is what I assume (i.e., not exactly living together but friends, etc).

One of these 9 has already originated a confirmed tertiary transmission.

It's so easy to spread.

That’s exactly what it is. Thankfully only two confirmed cases in my region yet, but that’s definitely going to rise in the next week or two I’d imagine.

I haven't seen that movie but the attitude towards elderly parents in Western countries is something largely alien to many other parts of the world.

All this talk of a few hundred cases is bullshit. They’re only testing people who fit certain criteria and who largely self select themselves for testing in the first place. We keep hearing stories about individuals who went out with the virus and we’re supposed to be shocked by how irresponsible they are. Meanwhile there’s probably thousands of infected people with no idea who are out there spreading it everywhere.

That still isn't as bad, Germany has 3-4 times that number, and it started a bit later with the confirmed cases.

If you think Britain is handling this badly, Germany is a shambles.
