Feck, Spain has already reported 171 dead today. And new cases are rising fast.

How are the British expats handled there? Are they going back to Britain?

French Confirmed COVID-19 patients were included in a single arm protocol from early March to March 16th, to receive 600mg of hydroxychloroquine daily and their viral load in nasopharyngeal swabs was tested daily in a hospital setting. Depending on their clinical presentation, azithromycin was added to the treatment. Untreated patients from another center and cases refusing the protocol were included as negative controls. Presence and absence of virus at Day6-post inclusion was considered the end point.

Six patients were asymptomatic, 22 had upper respiratory tract infection symptoms and eight had lower respiratory tract infection symptoms. Twenty cases were treated in this study and showed a significant reduction of the viral carriage at D6-post inclusion compared to controls, and much lower average carrying duration than reported of untreated patients in the literature. Azithromycin added to hydroxychloroquine was significantly more efficient for virus elimination.

Has there been any reported instances of someone younger than 45 and in good health(non-smoker, no preexisting condition) passing away, apart from that one doctor in Wuhan?

It seems like around 30% of patients in the hospital are younger than 45, but it's hard to find stats over how many of these people pass away(without having a preexisting condition).
 
LBC is a thoroughly depressing listen this morning. So many people in completely dire straits and not knowing where their next pay check is coming from or how they're going to pay bills/buy basic necessities.

Government is being far too slow to act.

Yep, most Tesco home delivery stuff is literally a Tesco assistant walking around the normal shop, picking up your stuff and putting it in the bag. There's a limit to how many substitutions a shop will make before the order becomes impossible - particularly when basics like milk, eggs, loo roll, soap shelves are empty.

It's why Morrisons (and presumably other supermarkets) are trying to set up packing lines to put together standard hampers of stuff for delivery. That's such a change in their systems though that it'll take a week or two before we see it.

Meanwhile all the best to your in-laws I hope they get better news (and what they need) soon.
 
Going to be tough for UK with mothers day this Sunday, Easter and the sun coming out this time of year.

We should be staying in and wearing masks to the shops and around other family members but we'll do the exact opposite.

One of the big reasons we don't see outbreaks in other Asian countries is masks stop most or all droplets going up into the air. Just think how fast it can spread if someone coughs in a supermarket or at home, multiple people exposed who then expose others and it rapidly spreads. Also masks can stop you breathing in heavy dose of airborne droplets. I see people coughing on food shelves, with a mask on you can stop doing that but of course you need to change them often. People in the west just don't want to wear masks, like when bicycle helmets were seen as funny looking but decades later we got used to them.

I think the residents will have stayed, because they won't see any advantage in returning - unless it's for family reasons. A surprising number of tourists, including some I know who spend a chunk of winter there, seem to be in the hunkered down phase as well.

Outside Madrid, the health system still seems to be coping. Everywhere where I know people seems to be on a "food/medicine shop only + no contact local walking" pattern with police enforcement.

Businesses that have (non food) retail operations are shut as are any services that require home visits like gardeners etc.

Part of the reason why I expect it to be particularly bad in America is due to the existing issues with obesity:

This is from 2010 but I can't imagine it's improved. Obesity almost without exception comes with a whole host of underlying health issues.

I suggested the hamper idea in a thread in the general. It would stop hoarding if everyone did it.
I’ve just been looking at the Tesco twitter feed, it’s becoming common for orders to be cancelled due to “store issues” (empty shelves).
Unfortunately they will have to venture out. Problem is that as they have found, even going to the OAP time, it’s still very very busy. They described trying to get milk as madness as it was 3 rows deep of people trying to get to it! There has to be a better solution than this, people are literally going to kill each other trying to get food! Maybe the best solution is complete lockdown and everyone gets allocated a time slot to go to a supermarket/shop/food centre. Alternatively hire security/police/army for all stores controlling amounts. Army cadets can help restock quickly

Clearly the system isn’t working because of human nature to survive

Luckily I sent my card early to my mum as I thought things might go to sh!t. Also got cards for my wife hidden in the house, small gift and a box of chocolates. Normally I totally spoil her on this day so I’ll have to come up with practical ways to make her day as nice as it can be stuck indoors

Insider trading happens every single day. No it’s not right. But nothing will happen to those people because they make the rules. People will only take a fall if it suits someone important, politically.

I can only speak for Italy but as of 17 March there had been 17 deaths under 50, with the youngest being 31. 5 of those were under 40 and all had serious pre existing diseases.

Thanks for the update! No healthy person below 40 dying so far in Italy is uplifting reading.

Now if only everyone in the rest of the world could take social distancing more seriously so that not more middle-aged and elderly people die...

A Bollywood singer apparently lied about her travel history (London) came to my city and attended a party with more than 200 guests including politicians and officials. She came back positive for Corona. The whole part of the city where she lives is apparently being quarantied and sealed off. She might be our patient 31.
 
I wonder if the UK's two worst hit places (London & Glasgow) will be shutdown today. Tenuous I admit but someone I know well has a close relative in the army who reckons the forces are expecting to be deployed to the streets soon.
