SARS CoV-2 coronavirus / Covid-19 (No tin foil hat silliness please)

The UK govt have been reactive to the whole situation from the start. They need to be proactive now & enforce a lockdown before it spirals completely out of control. Simply asking people to avoid interaction isn’t going to work.

It really isn't.
I nipped out before to get some mother's Day cards and gifts (which were all sold out, god knows why people are panic buying gifts) and the amount of people I saw socialising in supermarkets parks and even seen people in pub beer gardens which were clearly still open just with the curtains shut was very alarming.

Sorry for my complete ignorance:

At the writing class I went to last week, a lady sat next to me & halfway through the class, she mentioned that she'd just returned from India after four weeks. Should I be worried about my health? Or hers even?

That could depend on a lot of factors, Steve. For instance, did she take a direct flight from India or was there a stopover in Italy or Spain?

He is a doctor, not sure about his specialty.

I will say, as another doctor myself and one with some previous background in Public Health and Infectious diseases (but am NOT a public health or ID physician) that simply being a doctor does not mean you're an expert on this stuff. The people I'd really listen to in these situations are epidemiologists or people who work specifically in outbreak situations. Then Public health doctors/ nurses. Then ID doctors. Then regular doctors/nurses. Then regular people. Then celebrities. Then probably politicians.

Neil Ferguson for example, the professor who wrote the excellent paper credited with changing the UK and USA's approach, is actually a mathematician and epidemiologist for instance.

This is not to slight Arruda, myself or any other doctors on here or in real life. Just a reflection that being a doctor and specialising in, for instance paediatrics or dermatology, or still being in training, does not make you an expert in outbreak control and what strategy to take when facing a problem of this magnitude.

Having said that, his posts are always informative and clearly well researched and thought out. And (I believe) in his second language no less.
I think that Neil Ferguson guy was one of the first to realise that Covid 19 was being transmitted from human to human. Early sentiments were that the infected were infected by animals but he called BS on that and said it's unrealistic for that many people to be infected by animals, it was most likely human-to-human transmission.

Clever fella, it seems.

The US cases are jumping up by something like 5,000 a day. They could easily end up with more than China if they carry on at their current rate.

Ireland have reported less cases today to yesterday despite a continued level of testing so from what my government are saying social distancing is working.

Italy is introducing stricter measures from tomorrow.

I've said already social distancing is a waste of time. Italy started with that a month ago, it didnt work. We have been in almost complete lockdown for 2 weeks and it's made no difference. Total enforced quarantine seems to be the only way to stop it. A lot of countries are going to learn this the hard way.

Until a vaccine is found?

I don't know, mate, she was a complete stranger to me (this was the first time I'd attended the class. Thankfully, this Friday's was cancelled).

I think you are going to twist yourself in knots worrying about it mate. Reading this thread too much will not help you there either.

Odds are very favourable at the moment that you are both fine, and there's nothing you can do now anyway, so find something else to occupy your mind is the best thing for you.

The most serious thing I had was that my eyes were nearly closed at one point. But that doesn't sound like coronavirus.

Just read about a holocaust survivor dying from Covid19. Fecking hell man, imagine surviving the holocaust and then dying from a virus never seen before. Talk about being unlucky.

The figure of 'Positive Cases' - how is this being tracked or used as a metric?

Most people are self isolating and not getting tests therefore how does one use that as a reliable way of quantifying said data.

Anyone know why the number of cases in Russia is so low in comparison to Europe? I understand this may be a very dumb question so apologies in advance.

It has shot up these past two days to 356 and one death. I guess they have not been testing as much as other countries have been doing. Testing is the only way to find out and forced quarantine to control it.

Can someone give me a quick run down on the lock down in Italy? Last I read was that most people were still going to work if not able to work from home, and social gatherings and whatnot banned.

As others have said and as I feared I think they may be telling porkies unfortunately.

The neighbour in the adjacent apartment is coughing her arse off. I hope this thing doesn't mutate and start going through the walls.

What age was the person? Hardly bad luck to survive the worst genocide of mankind to pass at an elderly age to a virus?

Why? It's not that every country has a spike the same time? The way the graph is going for Russia they have not hit that mark yet. It's bound to rise for sure in the days to come. Now researchers think the covid virus may have come to Italy not from China but Germany. But thiat said it started in Wuhan in China.

Let me add to this. WHO says Russia has closed the border with China from January and have been testing from January. They also have put in isolation routine from January. Yet the cases may spike up as in other countries. They have also done over 156,000 tests already. That's a lot too. According to WHO they have been following the advice of WHO since January.
I would say that most countries should have put in place the testing and quarantine these countries have put in place since January.

Look at Thailand. They are crazy. They are only closing the Malls tomorrow. All these time they didn't do much to quarantine any place.

I don't have the corona virus as I have none of the symptoms but I am so ill, I didn't think it was possible literally not be able to consume a drop of water without throwing it back up. Been this way since of the middle of last night. Hopefully just a 24 hour bug.

Feel like this presumably makes me a bit more high risk, so heightening the lockdown. Fortunate that I'm in a position to work from home!
I’ve a headache and legs feel tired .
I live alone. I hope it’s just a 24 hour thing

Continuous dry cough and a fever are the ones to look out for so I’m sure you are fine. Just scary for everyone and even when I cough once I think oh feck it’s here haha.

My dad who lives alone said he was sweating during the night even though I told him he hasn’t been out of the house for 10 days and any visitors just drop him stuff at the door

I hadn't realised the significance of the median age before.

In Italy, the median age of the infected was 63 on the most recent figures I could find (March 18th).

That would explain the low death rate alright, and mean we really should at implement the proposed self isolation of the elderly, as hard as it would be on them.
Hopefully having the youngest population in Europe can save us from the worst of this

Well Amazon.it has basically shut down tonight to give you an idea of the limitations. No more Italian films for me for a while.

The US is now 3rd for number of cases.
And that’s with very little testing per million population. Real figure is probably at least three times of reported, could be ten times that easily. New York figures are terrifying.

It's on two cases according to new sources. But that isn't confirmed.

Ya I hope so.
I guess it’s a natural reaction now to panic.

It's weird McConnell as leader of Senate is nowhere in the priority list!
It seems to end at 17 and he's not on there. Going to have to rewatch designated survivor. I'm surprised myself that's it's not VP, Senate Leader, Speaker, Cabinet. Funny his wife is on the list but ineligible due to place of birth.
