This is what my friend wrote:
In as much as I thought full lockdown was the only way, I have now realised how lucky we are to live in a country where the government is actually on top of things and it’s working.
Shutting down international travel and quarantining incoming passengers, school from home, social distancing and WFH, and businesses like takeaways and (critically) Bunnings remaining open has been effective. Yes, it’s trying to be home based but we still get to buy our creature comforts. We can’t hang with our friends and families but we get to do driveway drinks with our neighbours. We’ve had to cancel things like our wedding but can still go outside to exercise and in our areas to swim in the ocean.
As it stands we’ve avoided the health system crisis that other countries have faced. In addition the government support of small business and individuals is not something I’ve ever seen in my life.
Today I am feeling encouraged. There is talk of relaxing some restrictions in coming weeks too, and kids going back to school.
