This isn't really a limitation of technology but willingness on part of the US police departments to open themselves up for accountability.
That would be the most sensible solution. A chip in the bottom of the holster that activates the cam as soon as a tazer, gun, baton etc is drawn.
Yeah I fear that to be the case. More openness and accountability is exactly what's needed so a clear change in this area would be a tiny step to reform the service and public opinion.

The issue being discussed is the shooting of a store owner by officers who appear to have had their cams switched off.

For one large city Police head to be bold and brave enough to ask his entire force to take a knee. Shields down. Batons and guns holstered.
Take a knee. Grab a loudspeaker, address the crowd. Apologise. Tell them they are heard. Ask them for calm. Promise change. Make change happen.
Not that it should be a consoderation, but That person would stand to be one of the pivotal people in US history.

Yeah people are acting impulsively and irrationately, filled with hate and anger. Stuff like this will just make the police act worse against others though. Scared police = more violent police. Definately escalating with extreme violence now. Trump doesn't excactly help the police with the way he acts either.. Must be scary times to live in the us now, pandemic and all plus all this.

I mean we saw two police vehicles accelerate into a crowd two(?!) days ago in NYC. The police have already been "there".
How often do peaceful protests actually get stuff done? How often do they change anything? The likes of Kaepernick were peaceful protestors and they were demonised.
America unfortunately has to see this stuff on their streets for them to wake up to it, arguably the world does in the current era of disinformation.
I don't wish violence or death on anyone but peaceful protesting only gets you far in the moral stakes, riots and looting do more for the real factors. Those people in power only really take notice when they have to as opposed to when it appears to be good optics to offer platitudes.
And "there" is not a place anyone wants to go. Two wrongs don't make a right. It is possible to look at each situation and be upset by them equally.
However awful this occurrence was, it kind of annoys me how this one is getting global coverage with people from differing countries even contributing to the protest but other instances of police brutality which occur very often do not garner this kind of attention. I know this annoyance may be irrational as the beginning of a global movement against racism is obvisouly great, however I can't help but feel lots of people are doing it in an insincere manner on social media platforms (i.e. just following everyone else in posting something about this instance of police brutality when no other instance of police brutality got this kind of attention).

Except for the people who spent their last days gassing, spraying, beating, shoving, shooting and arresting protesters I guess? And when you say both situations upset you equally does that mean you assume the other driver had an emergency to get to as well?
I think running over people is wrong. Period. But I'm against framing this one like it gives the police an excuse for further escalation, when they have already relentlessly abused legitimate protesters for days. And while I hope that this driver will be brought to justice I doubt he will get it either way.

It's a shame there's no forum which allows adults to discuss things rationally without the childish undertones.
This stuff should get more media attention and is what's needed to help de-escalate the situation and shut Trump down. Not all cops are racist nor are they bad people. This needs to be seen as how to police and be in touch with your communities.

Im quite surprised and horrified at how well the US police are equipped. Every single one of them seems to have full body armor, weaponry, gas masks, shields etc in abundance. You would think that in this sort of situation they would be stretched too thin, but that doesnt seem to be the case. The sheer volume of them. How much of the US economy and taxpayer money has gone into recruiting, paying, training and outfitting these thousands upon thousands of officers?
In the UK I would expect to see some small units of similarly geared riot police, but the lines mostly made up of regular officers.
I know I mentioned it before and was called naive, but I really think/hope that if the army gets called in, then at least some of them will side with the protesters. I know the US military doesn't exactly have a stellar track record, but I genuinely think that the army folks would have actually signed up to protect their country, as opposed to the cops who seem to just love the authoritah and power tripping.
