Internationals September (Nations League + Friendlies)

No LB in the England set up? So a right footer at LB? Amazing how people don't seem to learn. With that being said, my guess is this will be the set up

----------------------------------------Henderson---------------------------------------
TAA-------------------Gomez-------------------Dier------------------Trippier
------------------------------------------Rice-------------------------------------------
-----------------Mount----------------------------------Foden-----------------------
Sancho------------------------------Kane------------------------------Sterling

Surely the French can find a better keeper than Hugo Lloris? And they are very weak in the right back area too. Good to see Rabiot back in the international set-up though.

Rabiot being back is a big surprise, I wonder what happened behind the scenes.

JRA and Kamara over Camavinga and Nzonzi any day of the week honestly.

Also with Rabiot being back Benzema will be the most talked topic of the next few weeks

With all the quarantine madness setting in with some players tested positive this Nations League exercise seems completely pointless. Club football`s schedule is screwed up already as it is, how are teams supposed to have a functioning pre-season?
But I guess they can`t afford to drop their new toy.

Mings?

Mings has played LB for Ipswich and Bournemouth.

Chilwell, Shaw and Williams are injured.

Rose is awful since 2 years.

Pretty amazing that England are struggling with left-backs because the right-back options are endless (Alexander-Arnold, Walker, Trippier, Wan-Bissaka, James, Aarons, Justin, S.Sessegnon, Lamptey, Bogle, Laird & Matheson)

Saka? Bertrand? I'm sure there must be more. Oh, and Williams is not a LB.

Teams barely get any pre season and the players are knackered after a terribly congested second half of the season. They should have canceled these useless Internationals.

A positive is that Martial and Greenwood could get a good boost in confidence.

I didn't even realize internationals were taking place.

What a stupid idea.

Just can them all.

FIFA made this Nations League a bit of a joke. I mean it was already a bit of a joke after Germany was relegated last year but they changed the rules afterwards to keep them in League A. Now FIFA gave the clubs the power to ban their players from taking part this international window and that's exactly what has happened. Southgate can pick his favorite team but little Iceland has all of their best player out. No Gylfi Sig, no Alfreð, no Jóhann Berg, no Aron Einar captain, no Ragnar Sigurðsson. Against Belgium there are 3 players banned from playing so that's 8 starters in total. Only good thing about it all is that it forces Hamrén to give some players a place in the squad but it won't guarantee that he'll play them.

Given the noises around England players and Covid I’d be surprised if we don’t have a number of withdrawals.

I don't think so. Our players aren't automatic starters for their clubs but they are for their countries. The English players need to show up if they want to play for England and earn their spot. Someone like Harry Kane might not need to but he's not the type to do so.

It will be an easy 4+ win for England playing against a mismatch of semi-pros, young players without experience and a couple that aren't even with a club. A joke of a squad really. The inept manager even picked 4 goalkeepers.

Just seen France are in a group with Sweden, Croatia and Portugal.

Midfield options look weakish and they lost away to Sweden in 2018 qualifiers. Two matches against Portugal could easily be draws.

Generally curious if Uefa would change the rules again if they finished bottom like with Germany. Probably have 10 team groups in next nations league edition just to be on the safe side.

Apparently there will be a number of withdrawals and replacements for England on Monday. A number of our players are in quarantine. Our depth will be better than Iceland’s of course. It’s going to be a weird break.

I was wondering the same when I saw that Germany was still in the first tier after they came last in the group last year. What rule changes happened?

Southgate has said that Saka is a left winger in his plans.

Williams has played 99% of his United and England U20 games as LB.

Just because Williams has played there, it doesn't mean he should. He's way too right footed to be a left back. He should be putting pressure on AWB not Shaw.

Yeah, we've got 2 players playing the PL and about 4-5 players in total with the possible quality to do so. All of England's players coming in will be PL players. Difference normally is the team cohesion but there's none in this current setup. The manager has made a shockingly bad selection which is par for course for him and it might be the worst Icelandic team in ~20 years.

Things will get even more crazy with covid as the seasons goes along. Feels like restrictions getting lower all over the world .

Glad Grealish is finally in the squad. The midfield is going to be weird for these 2 games but has the potential to be exciting.

Im sceptical about that. I think the issue here is that the players have been partying through their holidays. Probably lots of casual sex too. When the season starts they’ll be under the strict regime they were at the end of last season.

Talking about Pogba here ;). Hopefully it will be more strict once they are back playing.

How has Laporte still not been called up. Has he pissed Deschamps off?

Not good enough I guess in his eyes. Has not been impressed with his season that much near the end.
Although not sure the other picks have done more. Lucas Hernandez has been injured a lot too so should not be in the squad.

San Marino vs. Gibraltar should be fascinating... will literally be like a cup final for both of them... especially for San Marino, who have a chance to win their 2nd game ever. (It would be Gibraltar's 5th... but they won a match as recently as 2018, where as San Marino's was in like 2004)

What do you make of Russia's chances against Serbia? - @Demyanenko_square_jaw @harms
I think Serbia are the favourites in this one, I'd expect us to struggle creatively without Golovin and Miranchuk (and Dzuyba has lost some of his form). I don't know much about Serbian team aside from a few individuals though.

Our league has already started though and some of the Serbian biggest stars are yet to go through their pre-season. It's such a weird and a pretty much unprecedented situation with all this COVID stuff.

Only 3 changes possible in this matches - not 5. That is stupid as it is the first matches of the new season and a lot players still are in preparation or came directly out of holidays.

Fantastic to see Germany have called up Robin Gosens from Atalanta. Real chance for him to stake a claim for left back ahead of next summer.

Levitt starts for Wales. Didn't even know he was in the squad. Giggs much be following us closely.
James starts too.

Then we have De Gea in goal for Spain as well.

Exciting first lineup from Stephen Kenny for Ireland. Putting his money where his mouth is.

Pau Torres starts for Spain against Germany tonight.

Strong lineups for both teams.

Too bad he didnt want to play for Holland. Though understandable since he played for all German youth teams.
