Premier League Gameweek 3

And? Probably explains why they lost so badly.

Who plays there usually? Do they spend all game whipping in crosses in to the box or is it Sterling and mahrez who ends up wide with de bruyne and Silva(last season) making runs in between the half spaces? That's why Kyle walker is much less attacking than he was at spurs because the width comes from the inverted forwards.

Whenever Mendy has played for Pep, he's always been their width on the left. Walker tucks in and sometimes operates as an inverted full-back with the inverted winger playing wide in front of him; De Bruyne runs into the half-spaces between channels. On the left, Mendy occupies wide and Sterling shifts inwards and underlaps into channels. When Zinchenko is playing on the left, that's different, but as far as Mendy's involvement is concerned, it's always high and wide.

The kind of press @Hoof The Ball describes is actually less tiring then being its 'recipient' or having a less organized play. It means you get the ball quickly and can play the game at your tempo, rather than having to chase the ball. I also read somewhere that it's much more motivating playing like this, cause you're in possession more often and not constantly chasing shadows or being hounded. Feeling good about your game helps a lot for fitness (and last-minute winners).

Thank you, Cheimoon.

One thing I've noticed about Liverpool is that when there's a loose ball in the middle of the field, they don't try to control the ball after winning the second ball but just lump it up. It's obvious that the second ball being won is the immediate cue to Salah and Mane to start the run onto the defenders shoulder.

Lacazette had to know he was offside to do that.

Remember when the majority of Redcafe didn't think Mane was good enough when LVG was rumoured to be in for him.

What a thread that was.

It happens all the time.

It just shows that even at the highest levels, it's still really difficult to identify talent AND the mentality to go along with it.

Just wait a few years until Ismaila Sarr (or whoever the feck else) is tearing up the league and people will be complaining about not signing him, despite all the disparaging comments in the Sancho thread.

Please tell me that was offside from Lacazette. Criminal if not.

The ease at which Liverpool create good opportunities in the final third is frightening.

They need a few good touches and they are immediately in a dangerous position.

Other teams go to hell and back just to create a single decent chance from open play

They remind me a lot of Fergie's teams. A lot of times it's not pretty football but is effective. They don't waste their time playing tippy tappy football. It is all about vertical passes, constant movement and intense pressing. If they don't win the first ball they win the second ball. It's not precise football but when you see waves after waves of red players running at you at fast speed, you are bound to lose your shit and make mistakes.

Maitland-Niles looks like a contest winner tonight.

Bloody hell Lacazette, utterly sh!Te.

Where's the 250k a week man Auba today, is he going to show anything at all?

In those old threads there was still a lot of people who recognised Mane's good technique and ability in front of goal. With Sarr, well, he's very physical but he has none of the technical or scoring poise that Mane had at Southampton.

That kind of explains why their midfielders while all technically not that great individually, still function well as a pack because they are all on the same wavelength

What's Trent doing there. He watches his entire line push up but stays behind and plays Lacazette onside.

Oh I wasn't making the point about Sarr specifically, just showing how things can change dramatically from year to year.

Zincheko has played more appearances in the PL than Mendy & when he does as you say both him and walker remain inverted in a 235. There is also Cancelo and Mendy who play the other way but its proof that proper systems can be played without attacking fullbacks.
