My understanding is its actually more likely to protect someone who is exercising their free speech against a public figure, and even more so someone who is in public office. Threats need to be actionable and imminent.
'Removing him one way or another' is not an actionable or imminent threat. Its not even a direct threat of violence, its an implied threat- unless there is more in his statement? It might be enough to get a knock on the door in Europe, but the 1st amendment will protect him.
