Mickey Mouse cup. Can’t see the Spurs fans getting over excited about that.

Agreed they haven’t won any silverware in 13yrs but that statement is surely over the top?

Is this another one of his attempts to draw attention to himself? Is it genuine? Tactical reasons?
 
Jose knows win a trophy (albeit a Carabao cup) and he can boast how amazing he is. He knows he can never win a major trophy with spurs so anything is better.
 
His first real test.
 
He's not wrong IMO - trophy's are what it's about even the League Cup.

Yet another thread on what Jose says.
I am not sure if people don't get it. Jose says whatever things he believes will fire-up his players to bring their ace game.
It can be things like this or abuse some of his players in public or criticize his club.

It may not make sense. Maybe ridiculous. Cheap, dirty, whatever. He doesn't care as long as it brings the intended consequence.

That is textbook Jose.

I mean, Spurs haven't won anything in ages so a Carabao trophy would matter, even if it's a small one.
 
I reckon had the game against the mighty Marine gone ahead, it may have just pipped this one.

I mean he is right, they haven't been in a cup semi final under him and last season they weren't in contention for the top 4.
 
The first trophy may open up the floodgates for us. If we can win this competition then it could instil the confidence in the boys needed.

It's very unlikely but I think the best chance of winning a major trophy is with Jose in charge. At least he knows how the win a trophy and he can transfer that mentality across to the players. Europa league is a viable target this season for us and certainly a possibility.

Yeah, i dont buy into this "trophy at all cost"-philosophy, especially not when we aren`t talking about the biggest trophies.
Is mind-boogingly boring football for a couple of years really worth a league cup, for a club of Spurs size?

And if it fails and he wins nothing? Of what use was being bored to death twice a week then?

Trophy-draugths are not fun, i know, but you also watch football for the entertainment of it.
 
He wants that trophy and this is by far his best chance of getting one given he's facing a Championship team then one of two clubs he's already beaten this year (albeit both are in better form than when they last faced Spurs). He seems to be using these public comments to encourage his players to approach the game in the correct manner.
 
Lowering expectations. He had his swagger back for a couple of weeks when they were top and then they shit the bed with 1 win in 6.
 
Nowt wrong with saying that to keep your players focused for it just in case some were thinking it would be easy against a Championship side.

Yes he will want you to get a trophy. Like I said Jose knows he can forever call himself a great manager for spurs even if he wins any trophy for you guys.

Mourinho arrived at Spurs last season only after our chances of finishing top 4 had already been severely dented. Money-wise you could argue that the UCL knockout stage made those a bigger game, but not in terms of chances to win a trophy.

Anyhow, clearly Mourinho wants to motivate his players for the Brentford match, so in the end that's all that's really involved here.

Its easier to tie down the likes of Kane and Son etc if they manage a top 4 and a trophy. Players then know they can win things. Much easier to buy into the project if they manage league cup win along the top 4 spot imo

Playing a cup final is a huge thing for footballers.
 
Not his biggest fan, far from it, but I wish him bigger games than this.
 
I agree with him. Getting to a final is a boost even if it is the Carabao cup. Especially as Spurs haven’t won anything in years
 
He's probably not wrong given Spurs recent history and he is honest about it. Also, for a micky mouse cup two of the biggest managers of the past decade in Jose and Pep seem to value it highly. Ole is probably approaching the game with City in a similar fashion as he wants a trophy as springboard for this team.

Actually it's 2 wins, 2 draws and 2 defeats from our last 6 games ... and one of those defeats was in the toughest fixture in the league (away at Anfield).
 
I hope we meet them in the final and smash them then Jose gets sacked next morning

The floodgates? To what? More league cups? You aren't winning the league or the CL anytime soon.
 
It’s a major trophy. Spurs haven’t exactly got them coming out of their arse.

Exactly. Im sure both see it as a good boost to the squad given the final comes earlier in the season. More managers should see it the same way imo.
 
He’s not wrong and I’d say he’s the one who’s responsible for more clubs taking the League Cup more seriously. Pretty sure Sir Alex attributes our 2006 league cup win as a springboard to massive success in those following years. Guardiola takes this competition seriously too.

It‘ll mean a lot more to Spurs as it’ll be 13 years since their last trophy if they get there. I also think he’s giving a lot of respect to Brentford by saying it’s important, as well as reminding his players to not be complacent with Brentford despite their Championship status.

A trophy is a lot more memorable than a league position finish. Who gives a feck if we finished 6th in the season we won the Europa League and the League Cup? Two trophies these days with the competition around is a pretty good season now. I remember the Zlatan show against Soton at Wembley more than our league performances that season.

Never mentioned the league or UCL. I may be a Spurs fan but I'm a realist, I'm just commenting that after we win the 1st trophy which is hopefully this year will give us a platform to win more trophys in the future. Whether that's the FA cup/League cup/Europa league.
 
I haven't wanted anything more than a Brentford win, please footballing gods.
