Your most overrated footballer

It’s probably Ronaldinho for me. I believe that at his best, he was the best football player the world has seen (or alternatively that his best was better than Messi). I don’t think many others share that view.

Trundle was one. At his best he could make opposition players look foolish, but other than very, very tidy technique with ball control, he didn’t have enough outside of that to have stepped up the football league. Still an absolute joy to watch.

Jason Koumas. Ridiculously talented player. Unlike Trundle, he absolutely had the ability to have made waves at a big club, lovely passer, great ball carrier and a beauty of a shot on him. He had an infamously poor mentality though that meant he ended up as a journeyman and it took me a while to accept that he wasn’t going to breakthrough to the top level. Gerrard and various football personalities have alluded to his talent, and also sadly his mentality.

Taarabt. Great player to watch and technically very gifted. The lesser the gulf between him and the opposition though, the more he faded. For a short while I thought he was destined to be a big player.

Ozil i think is massively overrated.

Martin Palermo i used to think was one of the best strikers in the world at Boca Juniors, went to spain and was shit. Think he missed 3 pens in one game

Used to think Defoe had the ability to play at the very top, quality goal scorer but maybe he was obviously lacking something that stopped him getting a move.

I flicked through and saw people mentioning Henry and Bergkamp, unless you thought they were top 10 all time players, you weren't overrating them. Henry was one of the best strikers of his era and Bergkamp was one of the best forwards or second strikers of his time too. They were absolutely world class.

Seriously, Buffon... Buffon who's played at the very top level for 25 years and has won almost every thing available to him during that time? Buffon that is widely regarded as one if the best goalkeepers ever? Yeah, it was just you that over rated him.
plenty players played at the top level for years dont mean they are all world class and loads won plenty of things as well, could have put Adrian in goals in italy for years and still would have won the league with Juve. it just me seen others as well.

I'm guilty on overrating Carrick.

What way did you overrate him? He was a brilliant player and absolutely vital to an amazing period of success for the club. What I would give for a prime Carrick now. He's exactly the type of player we desperately need.

Prime Ozil was an unbelievable player. Even at Arsenal, when he was arsed, he could be brilliant. I think he's a superbly gifted player with flaws. He had the most assists in La Liga in all of his 3 seasons with Real. The Madrid players were devastated when he was sold.

Not sure who overrates him? He's never been a contender for the Ballon D'or.

That is bollocks and you know it. Buffon was world class keeper and definitely one of the best ever.

This thread is about the player you most overrated not who you think is the most overrated player.

same difference, hes overall still over rated if you think hes one of the best ever

Mbappe.

I thought he was the best teenager in history during the 2018 WC when there was R9, Pele and a few others before him. Granted, he hasn’t improved much since then either.

Agree completely on Sterling. Don't think I've ever watched a performance from him and thought he's a top tier player. He's a good player playing in a great system.
Agree there too. Good player but got some bits missing, he can’t really hit a ball, for one. Showed himself up at WC2018.

A
Sterling and Salah for me.

Salah is very selfish and would look average if he wasnt surrounded by quality players. Produces moments of brilliance but nobody ever seems to comment on all the chances he wastes, I would consider him the weak link in the Liverpool attack and I genuinely dont think they would miss him that much if he left (although may need a replacement).

Sterling is good, but not to the extent that people hype him up. Bit of a pace merchant, poor decision making. Think a lot of his reputation simply comes from being English and at Man City.

Agree on Salah. Playing in a great system with a great coach but his touch is really scrappy. Mane is by miles their best forward, the only world class one.

Shinji Kagawa, I fecking adored him when he was with us, his passing was so smooth, I hated that Moyes shunted him out to the bench/left wing and van Gaal sold him :(

i think Moyes saw it too.. we were clearly a better footballing team with Kagawa as a 10. But Moyes either lacked the courage to drop Rooney or had a delusion that Rooney would become the player he was 9 years before if he just kept on playing him.

The amount of absolutely terrible takes in this thread is too damn high

I actually agree on Salah. He frustrates the hell out of me. The number of times he wastes good attacking opportunities because he won’t get his head up or make a pass is ridiculous. He’s entirely in it for his own goal stats.

Henry for me is the best striker I've seen in the league by a distant mile. I think the best way to describe him was simply unplayable. Also had a high amount of assist not typically paramount with a striker.

Juninho Pernanbucano, I used to think he was on the same level as Kaka just because of his free kicks, I was young but damn I always wanted him to play for us.

I did, and I categorically disagree that Rashford is overrated.

Your comprehension isn't very good. The OP asks about players you have overrated somehow.

If I say Rashford is the best player on the planet, I have personally overrated him. Doesn't mean he is an overrated player

Arshavin. The unforgettable Euro and the mind blowing start of his PL career made me a huge fan and I still think he could have been a legendary midfielder if the right mentality was there.
I'm mad to this day that he didn't quite make it, because I adored to see him play.

Honorable mentions: Ljungberg, Hleb, Rosicky, seems like an Arsenal thing for me for some reason.

In the past lots of players: I always looked at Iker's miraculous saves, but I was very benevolent with his shit feet control, or when he left the area to catch the ball without calculating well, what we call in Spanish "going out for grapes".

In Brazil we say "catching butterflies".

Was he really that bad though?

I felt he came and did quite well at Arsenal as far as I remember. Maybe I forgot.

I thought he ended up dying off a bit but it's not like that doesnt happen to alot of Arsenal players under Wenger like the ones you mentioned.

I was like you, I felt maybe under a different coach he could have extended that great run much longer than it lasted.

Patrick Kluivert. I really liked him but he barely won anything and I don’t think that’s a coincidence. He wasnt a starter when Ajax won CL, one la liga with Barca and that’s it I think.

I used to think Clint Dempsey was phenomenal and just needed a break at a big club... yeah I shouldn't trust my opinion on any players.

Mata. When we got him, i thought he'd be our Cantona and brought us glory.

Di Maria got my juicy optimism over the Mars also. I thought that he was one of the most complete player when at Madrid.
