Lingard to join West Ham on loan

Of course it’s psychological. He was very open about the psychological stress he went through over the last year or two. Which had nothing to do with football. There’s a lot of nasty twats in our fanbase who cut him no slack though.

What are we going to do here?! Fair play to Lingard, he’s given us a good decision to make. One thing is for sure, if we sell him, I hope the money is well reinvested.

That's a huge, huge win for West Ham. They can now afford to lose to Everton and Chelsea and still get to 70 points with wins against Newcastle, Burnley, Brighton, West Brom and Southampton. Those 3 points today puts them in pole position to nick that 4th CL spot.

At this time of the season playing each team left in a relegation battle is probably the tougher feat

There's something so FIFA about thinking you can just plug him back into the United team and he'll produce the exact same form as he's in right now. It looks specifically like the change in environment has done him the world of good.

Bloody hell let's bring him back next year and see if they can get VDB playing again in return.

Id take him back 100% with how thin our squad is and how certain players are overplayed and under performing. Ive always rated him

I still think we sell him for £20 - £30 million. He is very unlikely to replicate these performances for us given the different set ups teams have against us and the fact he won’t be a starter. There’s too much risk of giving him a bumper new contract and then his level been similar to the last few years. I hope he does well elsewhere but I can’t see it being for us.

Teams don't pack the defence against West ham.

This has got me thinking. For some reason I've always categorised him as someone who should be useful at breaking down park the bus sides, given his best attributes are his possession play and movement, rather than pace or dribbling skill that I would associate with players suited to counter attacking football. Yet, from memory all of his best goals and games for us were in open, expansive games or games we were playing on the counter. It doesn't quite add up as to why this is? I suppose he just lacks that extra touch of quality against packed defences.

Anyway, think its best for all if he moves on. He's not good enough as a 10 for us, he's really bad RW. I actually quite like him as a LW but we're well stocked there too.

If he carries on the way he is going there though we can ask for him to be a swap plus cash for Rice in the transfer window.

He were never a bad player, just the weakest we had but the different between top vs top top player is small

A swap deal that includes Rice is the best deal for all parties involved at this point. He's done great at West Ham, let him keep doing it for as long as he possibly can.

I hope for Lingard’s sake he doesn’t return. He is a better all round player at West Ham. Not a sideshow like he was here.

We have too many highly paid stars at United to justify making Lingard a staple feature of the first team and his previous form with us was atrocious. But that is football.

Certainly more than 30 million and we should be encouraging rumours that Arsenal and other teams are interested as well.

Just for a joke who would you swap Lingard for from Arsenal except Saka being an option?

30 million is not a good price. Because he can be a very good player for most clubs. Being a top player at United is something else. Especially when we're so bipolar from half to half and how would he dislodge Bruno? I think the expectation is too high and he threatened to get to a very good level but let it slip. We just have to see because even if he joined West Ham you can't really be sure what you'd get. There is no certainty that he'd be as productive, especially with teams maybe taking him more seriously as a threat.

I think people are getting a little tipsy in here. 40m for a 28 year old Lingard with a year left on his deal. No question he is doing stellar job for them and it happens to be the best football he's played in his life, but still. 20m looks pretty secure, if we can get more then great, but let's be realistic here.

I am happy that he is doing well but I still think that he will go off the boil next season just like most players do(auba for eg) after securing that big fat paycheck.

That was an incredible goal he scored today. Glad to see him regain his early career form - he obviously was shot of confidence and struggled to get any gametime in recent years. That being said, I think it would be best if he moved on. I don't think he has a place in our current team and won't get the time he would at West Ham. Best for him and best for both clubs.

I think it's just more to the point that Lingard is awarded far more positional fluidity at WH compared to United. That's why he's influencing the score sheet more prominently. I still think to some extent Lingard was misused at times but justifiable as he's never quite shown enough to be an undoubted regular with the club's ambition to win silverware.

He should be sold, sometimes a new environment / surroundings can do a world of good. If the club is interested in Rice then the hierarchy should come to some agreement. I also saw an article linking Jones with West Ham too.

Lingard will never succeed at United. Just move him on. Good for him he's having a decent season at another club.

Last thing we need is another proven non-performer on some outrageous contract.

You've categorised him wrong. He is good at exploiting space and finding himself in acres of it thanks to his movement.

Not much use at creating it though.

Always rated him but will always be a rotation player with purple patches for us. He will have a good career at a club like WHU or Leicester, but not here.

I like to see him back, but it is probably best for both to move on. We really need more attacking options though and hopefully DVB can improve next year.
Sadly I think he would also do great in another club with more trust rather than being backup for us.

If Greenwood can get going more again that would help as well and then getting a number 9 in as starter.

No way. If Grealish worth 80-100m for carrying Villa, Lingard should cost at least the same for carrying West Ham!

Grealish isn’t out of contract next season is he? He is also their most important player whereas Lingard is one of our reserves. I’d be amazed if we get more than £20-£30m for him.

He doesn't really fit into our system atm(which doesn't really work or make sense atm). Free role of the left isn't something we have going on. His movement off the ball is brilliant and certainly his greatest quality. Great to see him doing well.

Hes literally had one genuinely bad season for us.. all the others hes been pretty decent. Hes a quality player.

He was pretty decent in one season. He's been quality in a few key moments but really, really poor for us most of the time. And he was playing regularly and performing poorly during our worst, in seasons where we were struggling to even get close to the top four. Hardly a barometer of where we want to be, if the worst regular starter during your worst period is seen as a good player to bring back into a squad that is demanded to be putting up a serious and sustained challenge for the league title next year.

This spell for West Ham is better than he has ever played in any period for us. Not that we needed any proof that playing well for West Ham and playing well for Manchester United have wildly different requirements.

Pretty sure there's going to be a bidding war, im expecting more than that.

Doesn't his contract expire next summer? If that is the case I can't really see it being more than that. He's been sensational since joining West Ham on loan but he's 28 and this spell aside he had been mediocre for quite a while, taking into account the pandemic it's hard for me to imagine teams risking a much bigger bid.

Lingard had years to prove his worth at United, and he never really did. I’m thrilled that he’s doing so well at West Ham, but bringing him back would be absolutely foolish. We need to take advantage of the leverage he’s created for us and move him on while his value is the highest it’s ever likely to be. It’s found money at this point. We need to grab it and run.

One of the main reasons I want him sold is because I hope that a relatively nice big transfer fee for one of our free homegrown players turns around a bit of the view that United dont have anything to buy that's worth money. All the players we buy go for a third of the price they are worth in my opinion.

Its not because he was "this crap player for us" - because he wasnt. He was quite the useful player during a more of a top 4 type of mindset we had in the squad.

It's why I can see Arsenal going for him too.
