Which means he can afford to take risks, afford to attempt something which might not come off. If he comes back he'll be (at best) a squad player again who rotates in and out, and I just can't see how he could possibly maintain the form he's in while missing games, coming off the bench etc

This is one of those rare instances of a loan deal working our for us. It's been the best possible outcome. We want to sell him but nobody is willing to pay for a player that has been forgotten about, so we settle for a loan to a manager that has worked with him. He performs way above expectation and reminds the league that there is a good player in there.

Well yes one bad season, but he also had plenty of poor periods sometimes lasting months in other seasons. Periods where he was decent to good and one 4 month period back in 2017 where he was very good. He was wildly inconsistent for United, though to be fair he was also quite often played out on the right wing which doesn't suit his skill set at all.
No he just signed a new contract a few months ago. He's also 3-4 years younger and a better player.
I wouldn't bother debating with the dreamers who think we could get £50-80m for Lingard. Reality will sort that out soon enough.
Jesse should be looking to play week in week out as a starter in his preferred position.
I love what he is producing for West Ham. Given the off field personal stuff he's gone through I'm happy to watch him enjoying his football again.
Definitely make the move permanent, if he wants it. He's got a manager who trusts him, he looks to be having the freedom to play around the forward line and always felt his strengths were in his movement off the ball.
He's always had a finish in him. You think it just might be worth taking this momentum and running with it in the environment he is flourishing in. What's the point in taking that and sitting on the bench at United?

Yeah. Folk are dreaming if they think we will get a fee anywhere near as high. Fees aren't just about contract lengths or age.
At the end of the day we're not selling one of our most important players to a bigger club.
I just hope we don't see this as his revival and take him back. He tends to do spurts of form as well.

I think LVG and Mourinho imparted a lot of negativity and conservatism into his playing style. Really annoyed with the many one touch passes back to the same player.
It would be best for everyone if he stays with West Ham now, which I believe he will want. At his age, he really needs to be starting games, which he won't do with us.
And also, I think a lot of his goals and assists have come on the counter, which our current starters have no problems with.
West Ham making Top 4 would seal it, with the added bonus of keeping either Chelsea or Liverpool out.

One thing people will have to explain to me is why some are so confident that Bruno is capable of consistent, high output, even though he’s only been in England for just a bit more than a year, and is therefore someone we have to build around, but with Lingard it is just a golden patch that can be written off and we should cash in on.

Because Bruno’s output over the course of that year has been insane, far beyond a purple patch of form. Lingard went over a year without scoring a goal, despite getting plenty of opportunities. That’s why.
You cannot just condemn Jesse for a smaller sample size when his small sample already matches Bruno’s much larger one in many ways.
In terms of their half-seasons after moving in January, Lingard’s 20/21 PL has already surpassed Bruno’s 19/20 for United. Lingard has 12 non-penalty goals and assists versus Bruno’s 11. Lingard is on a free-roll from here.
His eight open-play goals in the PL this half-season already matches Bruno’s for his entire season too!

So use Jesse’s bigger sample size and see that over the course of his United career he hasn’t been as instrumental as Bruno. He plays a different style and one that is far better suited to the way west ham are playing, and the way that teams play against West Ham. There’s a reason that players change teams and find an uptick in form or performance. Lingard is suited to where he is now and is thriving currently. Whether or not he keeps that up over a whole season for west ham is also an unknown, but from what people have seen of his time here at United, he’s a great role player to bring in, but is never going to be a key piece of the first team. Bruno has been the catalyst for a lot of good things that have happened, including his attitude on and off the pitch. He focuses on that first and foremost, doesn’t want to settle for second best, and I think most people consider him a key part of the attitude shift in the squad. Lingard doesn’t bring any of that kind of leadership quality and is more just “one of the lads”.

I'd question his ambition if we managed to convince him to sign a new deal. He should be pushing for a move. He'll never be anything other than a spare part with Bruno and Pogba here.

What’s just bizarre for me is that Bruno was already being talked about as an all-time great, impactful signing and getting comparisons with Cantona by the end of the last season
Lingard is looking like delivering even more on the field than what Bruno did, is potentially going to actually carry West Ham to a far more unlikely achievement, yet people dismiss it and talking it down as just some good form.
Are you taking the piss? Bruno is one of the most productive players in the world this season, let alone in terms of midfielders.
Because Fernandes did it at a new club, in a new league and a new country and that club happened to be one of the worlds biggest where the pressure is huge.

Jesse has had 6+ years at United to prove he could be a consistent top player. But at United it just never worked out for him.

Lingard is being talked about as someone on a hot streak because he has a body of work before joining West Ham that supports this idea.
Bruno is completely different in that he brought his United form with him from his previous club. Then he has been consistently productive at his current club for much much longer than Jesse has.
The difference is so marked it makes your downplaying of Bruno’s impact much more bizarre than anyone dismissing Lingard’s current form as unsustainable. I might be confusing you with another poster but aren’t you on some peculiar personal crusade to pretend Bruno’s been a lot less good than everyone else thinks he has?

He's a good player but he's not that good, talks of 50 million pound valuations and interest from Real is cuckoo land stuff. Anyone would think he is 21 year old and finally started to find his feet in the game with all the potential in the world. He's 28, we know what he's capable of long term and this isn't it.
I remember papiss Cisse being in even better form than this after a January transfer to Newcastle I think where everything he hit went in just like Lingard now (the Chelsea goal a prime example for Cisse)? and once the new season started he reverted to type and barely did anything.
