It benefits us though, better we’re part of it than not. Game died when we allowed billionaires to make nothing clubs like City in to world-beaters. Anyone against this is basically saying they’re happy with Man City and PSG being the only clubs with money. Because this is the only way anyone else will compete. These clubs are just being smart and realising that if they don’t protect themselves then they become a footnote in football history to state/oil clubs.
Mate I'm. football fan first and foremost. I'd happily give up united if other fans got to enjoy it. fecking hate this.

I really hate the sound of this, if it means United won't compete in the domestic competitions any more. That, to me, would make supporting United something very different. And not something I'd enjoy anywhere near as much.

At the moment, from a competitive level, the balance is just about right for me. I love the European competitions, but only as an addition to the domestic season. Not instead of it.

I get that, from a business level, all clubs are wanting more - and the big clubs are the ones in a position to do something about it. And I can understand the threats / bluffs from both sides.

But if the Super League really does come at the cost of domestic involvement for the top clubs, and international involvement for the best players, then that would be a really sh*tty development in the ever evolving sport and would be the biggest change I've ever known in it - and by far the worst.

It was bad enough in 2000 when the FA manipulated us into the World club champs, but wouldn't make any allowances us in the FA cup, hence us having to pull out.
That was dreadful, and this would be 100 times worse.

What a great idea in the middle of a pandemic. I really look forward to travelling all over Europe. Oh wait it's not over yet.

Oh and I can't afford it right now.

I don't think it will just be Europe. Can't wait to watch us play Arsenal in Miami in a battle for 8th place in one of the groups

Game has been going this way for ages, it started with Sky. Funny that people draw the line here. Should have drawn the line 30 years ago when Sky came in. It’s all the same.

What does this mean? Will this be an additional competition for these 12 clubs or is it a replacement league for the clubs own domestic leagues? From the hysteria, I’m thinking it’s the second one. What would happen to the champions league? Do they still play in that? I’m confused! Seeing Gary Neville’s reaction, this looks massive one way or another.

 fecking hell I’m debating with Jay from inbetweeners

You start calling me a cnut etc and come up with that reaction?

How about you start thinking before you type or is your frontal lobe permanently disconnected?

Roy Keane condemns plans for European Super League: "They couldn't care less about the football supporter who walks out and supports their club"

Well no. were regulated and we can get regelated and were abided by the very same rule that lowest club is. Do you really want to end that?

They would be out of the Champions League, the current indication is they want to stay in the domestic competitions but the associations have said they would be excluded and in reality I suspect they wouldn't want to stay for long anyway but can't say that from the start.

Can someone brief me up on this?
UEFA want to expand the CL to include more clubs, which likely reduces the revenue for the existing big clubs.

UEFA have also completely failed to reign in oil money clubs thanks to their farcical FFP implementation, and this has hugely driven up costs for the non oil big clubs.

The big clubs have been talking of a breakaway continental tournament for a while now, to pressure UEFA into bending to their whims/drop the expansion ideas but UEFA haven't done it, so the big clubs have gone ahead with the breakaway league plans.

Yup...
Said this in my last post. FA and PL should have done more to stop these owners coming in and doing what they want. For all the benefits clubs like Chelsea and city have had, there’s tonnes of other clubs on their knees because of the Pl, FL and FA not protecting clubs from snake owners. I mean look at what happened to Wigan.
It's happening to Burnley now as well. Their owners done a Glazers and have out their debt on the club

Ag
I presume it works in American sports because it has been the model from the beginning? I like that there is no relegation/promotion in those sports because it makes sense in the American context, but it has no business in European sports.
Agreed, introducing relegation to American sports is the equivalent of removing it from European. Unfortunately that’s what happens when capitalism takes over the sport.

If this is true I am disgusted. Very disappointed, especially with my club Arsenal and Liverpool!

Just plain wrong on so many levels.

The people for this, does the idea of being in a competition where you cannot be relegated and teams are there based on their brand rather than merit not sound farcical to you? Why would you even want to be part of that competition?

And I'm sorry, as nice as playing Madrid or Juventus is, I've grown up watching United go to Newcastle, Everton, Villa, West Ham, Forest and the rest and would rather do that. Travelling back from games in the car on some cold night but bouncing from the results. Give me that over watching a stream of United playing Barcalona in Dubai.

If many top clubs sign up they'll basically be banning all the good players from their tournaments.

Imagine Burnley v Sampdoria in the Champions League :wenger:

PSG, Bayern, Dortmund have all said no - still plenty of good clubs

No. It benefits the Glazers. It benefits no one else attached to the club.

It ensures a future for the club. I don’t like this either, but I’ve never liked the corruption of the game by money. At this point I’m long past giving a shit.

Well, great - am I overreacting, or just as things are clicking into place with Ole and the squad, are we now facing being kicked out of the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League next season? This could be very messy.
This would also make it rather difficult to win the treble next season.

There's a future for the club of regardless of whether we're in this or not, we're currently 2nd, we're not fighting relegation.

Situations don’t have to be 100% identical to make those involved hypocritical.

Re the bold, the only reason that’s true is the value of promotion to the PL which is the problem itself.

As a very high level overview of the financial situation in the Championship take a look at the Deloitte annual review of football finance, those clubs have to pile in enormous amounts of money to chase the PL dream and it causes big issues.

that’s down to bad owners. Any club owner overspending to try to get in the Prem with money they don’t have is a fecking idiot. It doesn’t have to be done. This is a choice.

It ends in spectacular failure a lot of the time too. Look how long Derby and Sheff Wed have been chasing this return to prem dream. They’re both in the bottom four of the championship heading to league one.

Since they were last in prem, the likes of Huddersfield, Reading, Bournemouth, Sheff Utd, Hull City have all come up on a fraction of their budgets. Three of those were literally in league one two/three years before they got into the prem.

I would hope the Govt intervenes. It is deliberately anti competitive. Just ban any club who signs up to this from playing in England.

This is some 1984 - freedom is slavery bullshit right here.

An organisation who has a monopoly over football, is using their power to try to blackmail private businesses into competing in their tournament rather than a non-sanctioned one and you want the government to prevent the competitor league by supporting punitive action?

Obviously under the current paradigm being part of the Champions League is something that no club would decline their qualification to, but surely clubs are free to turn this down and play whatever games they choose instead - if there is a market for the games to be televised they have a right to pursue it even if its a greedy move and not in line with a traditional view of football.

It might be novel, for a season, but would quickly become dull, like it does when you play the same team in the champions league a lot over a few years.

And there's no potential for excitement in the future, and in effect no risk with not winning enough games as you stay in the league.

All they need to do is add drafting, add quarters for more ads and we'd have a horrible American style set-up, which is based on entertainment rather than anything actually mattering about it.
