I don't think it's on purpose, but if you already have P1 and go out ahead for last lap, all your incentives are to push it to the absolute maximum... either you get a better lapvor you crash but secure pole.
I think Monaco should be shootout style qualifying, regardless of the rules at all the other events.

True. Just a frustrating outcome sporting-wise if he ends up keeping pole. I have no preference for Max or Charles or anything, just feels a really cheap way to end up securing pole.
There is no way he crashed deliberately, not the way he did, he could have a whole lot of damage , gear box for one.

I have to agree about it being frustrating. Looked like we were about to get a genuine shootout for pole.
Hasn’t hooked the setup this weekend and struggled to overcome tyre warm up and oversteer. He’s been poor basically and it’s costly around here.
He likely will have a decent car underneath him in the race but he won’t progress much from there baring incidents. Big chance for Max to eat into the lead and put pressure on.

Think if Leclerc and Max start on the front row they're almost certain to wipe each other out on turn 1.

Yeah, exactly, he'd have done a Rosberg and locked up into Mirabeau or Sainte Devote if that was his aim. He'd been getting insanely close to the barrier on previous runs and got it wrong on the final attempt, think of how many drivers have had that exact same crash there over the years.
Not sure he has been a great anything at Red Bull so far. Not ideal when you have a one year contract

whats the likelihood of Chalres having to change his gearbox and take a grid penalty? Probably best to keep the broken gearbox . Not like you need a functioning car to finish p1 in monaco anyway
Initial checks apparently look ok for him to be able to keep his gearbox so he might be ok, though they won't know for certain until tomorrow morning. Ferrari says a post-qualifying inspection of poleman Charles Leclerc's gearbox has not revealed "any serious damage", but the team will make a final call on the component's potential replacement on Sunday morning.

They aint changing it. Starting p20 here, might as well run the gearbox until it blows up. Best he'd hope for in that scenario is 10th. Unfortunately with these gum ball tyres, its high unlikely that any driver is able to pull off a "schumacher" and go last to 5th
