And because I'm in a graphics mood this morning, some raw stats on vaccine rates globally. The UK has very high coverage in the older groups but looking at the whole population, it's now slipping down the charts, particularly as other countries move to vaccinate the over 12s.

If 21% of our population are u18 and we're not going to to vaccinate the vast majority of them then surely we're getting close to the limit when you consider anti-vaxxers etc?

Close to it I think. Hopefully a few of the remaining, "I'm fit, it will never affect me," will change their minds. Others will be influenced by foreign travel etc. Surveys suggest only 5% reject the vaccine outright, so there's still a bit more room. But yes, we must be close to the realistic limit.

The JCVI guidance changed this week to allow 16-18 year olds to get the vaccine. So far though, there's been no real push on that and the national booking system still doesn't accept them. There's a suggestion that they won't really push on with them, until they can give them their own sessions - vaccine buses at the start of the school term maybe?

Whether they'll change the 12-15 advice is still open. It's an emotive subject for a lot of people. Personally, I suspect JCVI will wait for initial info from other countries in Europe and more data from the US, and then open it "with provisos" maybe in a couple of months time.

Hard to work out why a nation of chancers and cute hoors are so compliant here. I heard one suggestion was because “sure why not, it’s free”

One of the head honchos made a good analogy yesterday to counter the alarmists highlighting cases in the vaccinated. The vast majority of people killed in cars each year are wearing set-belts and only very small numbers are killed that aren’t wearing one.
 
Is there any particular reason the UK aren't giving it to 12-15 year olds? Ireland has just started vaccinating that age group and a lot of other countries seem to be too. Slightly surprised as the UK's approach to the vaccines seemed pretty gung-ho at the start and one of the few political successes the government had during covid.

It is a bit odd. They seem to be wanting to wait and see how things pan out in other countries before making a decision when up until now it’s been mainly other countries learning from the early data coming out of the UK. They’re also up against ticking clock with schools reopening soon and the several weeks it takes for vaccines to start doing their job.
 
Our vaccination campaign in Germany has gone to shit. Reached 60% at reasonable pace and now it seems to be levelling out. After picking up quite well in around May where we went ahead of plenty other countries it looks like we're doing even worse than the apparent most "vaccine sceptic" France and if you look at "rich western nations" as comparison only the US and Australia (lol) have a lower quota.
Frustrating thing is that every expert on vaccination campaigns saw that coming, I remember back in December listening to podcasts where scientists on vaccine hesitancy said that if the "apparent" thread wanes the interest of the "not so sure" category drops quickly and that you need incentives to keep the motivation to get vaccinated going. Instead every politician instantly ran into the "Should it be compulsory" debate and we've been waffling around for weeks doing nothing.
Now that cases are inevitably rising the next wave will probably help in getting people motivated - but at what cost?

They've decided someone else can go first on this one! The JCVI view it primarily from the perspective of serious illness/death and they say their reading of the data says there's no urgency from that perspective.

So they say they want to wait and see how the Pfizer myocarditis reports (which are higher in under 16 boys than in any other group) play out. So far, the US reports are showing that the incidents are being treated quickly and successfully, and that covid causes more myocarditis cases in under 16s than the vaccine does. I think they'd like to see the same data from Europe.

Once you move away from serious illness as the criteria, and throw in issues like: long covid, not missing school, contribution to reducing general community transmission etc - the choice to vaccinate looks obvious.

I think they'll make it available, but they're letting someone else find out the rules for it first. For example, maybe that will mean tailoring the advice to tell the under 18s (particularly the lads) to avoid exercise etc the day after perhaps, and changing the warning leaflet/doctor advice to be aware of the risk. Perhaps a good reason why they may want to use special clinic days of they do it.

They’re also looking into menstrual disorders. Lots of anecdotal reports of menstrual irregularities following vaccination (in the short term only)

Worth bearing in mind this sort of ongoing review and analysis of safety signals is absolutely normal and happens with all medicines. Particularly in the first few years after license.

I did actually mean chancers and cute hoors in the nicest possible way! I think you’re basically right though. For all our flaws we are good at doing what’s best for everyone around us when it’s needed. See also dickhead far right politicians being laughed out of every attempted election.

I knew what you meant by it. We could do with a bit more civil disobedience at times but in this instance it's great to see.
 
Feel like shit after my second Moderna dose. Got it on Monday afternoon, felt ok for the rest of the day. Slept poorly overnight and needed a sweater due to the chills, woke up with terrible headache and body pains, soreness in the injection arm which subsided with one Panodil and 200mg Ibuprofen. Still not completely there today but after a covid infection and two shots, I must be quite immune to the virus.
 


Breaks my heart a bit to think what this sort of coverage could have done to the alpha variant (never mind wild type) but c’est la vie. Amazing achievement to have so many people vaccinated before the end of the summer. Couldn’t have dreamed of this a few months back when it looked like the EU procurement strategy had fecked us over.

Italy's started giving out fines for vaccination Green Pass offences.
One week after Italy's green pass was extended to most public and cultural sites across the country, authorities have started handing out fines to those breaking the rules of its use.

Milan and Treviso are the first cities to encounter sanctions for breaching the terms of Italy’s expanded ‘green pass’, according to news reports. The infractions range from not having a green pass where needed to using someone else’s health certificate.

Police fined a 20-year-old in Milan because he was using a certificate that was not his own. The man now risks being charged if the document turns out to also be falsified.

A 68-year-old man was also fined in Milan and reported for refusing to show his green pass after sneaking into the open-air cinema ‘Arena Milano Est’.
Managers eventually alerted the police after attempting to stop him.

Meanwhile in Treviso, five customers of a betting hall were found without a green pass and will now have to pay a fine between €400 and €1,000 according to the rules set out by law.

I felt a small amount of fatigue after my second dose, but otherwise fine. Much better experience than my first dose. I am very happy to have this over and done with. Not sure if I would get a "combined" covid/flu dose but I would be happy to get a "booster" covid vaccine.

It’s against symptomatic disease. For guarding against serious disease and hospitalisations the protection is very high. Your wife may be more likely to get a mild to moderate disease from the Delta variant than if she had the Pfizer but the chances of the infection progressing to something more serious is still very small with AZ.

I used to think that the vaccine equivalent risk was the Uk policy of pushing out the second dose, therefore leaving loads of partially vaccinated people wandering round. I don’t think that logic holds though. Especially now we know even fully vaccinated people fairly regularly get a mild illness. And bacteria evolving to resist antibiotics is very different to viruses evolving to resist a vaccine. Because they’re up against the same form of attack, whether the host is vaccinated or non-vaccinated.

Which is a rambling way of demonstrating that I don’t know much about this stuff either!

So I got my second jab today (Pfizer) and felt my arm go sore about 5 minutes after. Took at least a day the last time.

Feeling a bit tired as well.
 
Second Pfizer jab yesterday. NHS/St John's staff/volunteers at the Riverside Centre (Isle of Wight) couldn't be better, another great experience there.

Again, no side effects other than feeling slightly like I had a few beers last night. The sore/dead arm is worse this time but I'd happily take 36 hours of that over 'proper' side effects
 
In the NSW outbreak we have had over 6000 cases with all or the vast majority being Delta. So far 99% of infections have not been fully vaccinated (92% unvaccinated and 7% partially vaccinated). We have had one death of a man in his 90's who was fully vaccinated and zero admissions to ICU, much less ventilated.

Looks like AZ and Pfizer are doing a great job with Delta.
 
An interesting look at what the (real life) vaccine efficiency calculations are telling us about impact of vaccines on hospitalisations.

Broadly, he's taking the age by age take-up rates for the vaccine, the known case v hospitalisation percentage in each age group (if unvaccinated) and then telling us what impact the vaccine is likely to have on hospitalisations.

Portugal who've done a great job on take-up top the table, Ireland doing great as well. The US and some other countries, despite having lots of vaccine available, haven't had the same kind of take-up rates, even amongst their most vulnerable.



To get an idea of what take-up rates mean in practice, take a look at Florida. They currently have around 15,000 people hospitalised - with a population a third of the UK (currently around 6,000 hospitalised). Florida's hospitalisation numbers are now higher than they've been at any time during the pandemic.

Florida's stats are not the vaccine's fault. They're what happens if you don't vaccinate enough, despite having the ability to do so.
 
I went a to wedding over the weekend and despite the large numbers and lack of social distancing, I didn't catch covid (according to the rapid tests taken yesterday and today.

Just had my second jab and I'm hoping for no symptoms other than a sore arm.
