F1 2021 Season

Just seen Hamilton calling for the fans to be refunded in his post "race" interview. Good to see a driver saying that, doubt it will make much of a difference to the higher-ups though.

Completely agree with Lewis, hopefully as one of the sports most high profile drivers they will follow his advice and refund the fans

To think the World Championship could be decided on this…

Verstappen got lucky today (well, we don't know how race would have played out), but the season could also be decided by Verstappen's puncture in Azerbaijan or Bottas's crash that took out Verstappen. You win some, you lose some.

It would be nice if all points were earned/lost exclusively due to driver and team decisions, but unfortunately, that's not how it goes.

You could argue he earned the points by being the quickest in quali

Yeah I can't complain. As a Lewis fan, he's had a bit of luck recently.

If Max wins his first WDC now it will always be one won with a race without racing

This sport is gone.

Found the celebrations a bit over the top tbh. Its not like they actually raced.

The rules need a huge overhaul. It was really was a mess from the first minute until the last.

Or just reschedule it at the end of the season
Ya might want to think before posting, Belgium in December.

There is a slot in October to be used, but you can't trust north European weather in October, it could be warm, it could be cold, it could be windy and pissing rain

What a farce. Fans who attended should be refunded and no points should have been given out. Not fair on the likes of lando.

I think the points thing is stupid but it is what it is. Yes, no racing, but they guys in those points positions were there on the merits of qualifying so I can grudgingly accept it.

As for whether fans get refunded because of it, if they don’t refund those fans who sat out in the rain for hopes of a race, because of 2 laps behind a safety car, that is beyond disgraceful.

I honestly do not understand why they could not just reschedule the race for a different weekend and offer a refund to the fans. It seems like the fairly obvious, logical and ethical thing to do.

The schedule is impossible. It's fully packed and they'll be in a different continent towards the end of the season.

IMO they should have ran the race on Monday. Pay the marshalls a days wage if required, issue tickets for the fans who want to come again on Monday, or offer refunds for people who didn't come back.

I don't really understand why they don't use some sort of road sweeper either? That could easily clear the water on the racing line while they wait.

IMO today they should have raced at the first opportunity. Previous races has been way worse than this, the spray wasn't THAT bad - they just need to go a little slower and drive to the conditions.

Senna and Schumacher would have won taken that race and won it with ease.

Logistics of rescheduling a race is too difficult and costly for the teams to put it at a different weekend and you can't postpone it to tomorrow because the Marshalls aren't available as they need to go back to work.

Just to play devils advocate, I’m not sure those things are equal. Having luck or not during a race is a part of racing, always. Losing points to a rival when no race has taken place is a bit of a farce.

I have no general issue with allocating points for qualifying positions if that’s what they want to do, but the rule needs to actually reflect that.

To pretend that they can now allocate points based on the fact they’ve raced two laps under a SC is just a loophole in the rule. I’ll add at this point I’m a Hamilton fan, but I believe I’m objective enough about F1 that I would be saying this regardless of who benefitted.

Cant race tomorow because lack of marshalls. They go to their actual jobs on monday. They all volunteers with normal jobs during the week
I’ve heard this argument, yet golf tournaments are semi regularly delayed into Mondays and they use volunteer marshalls.

Agree with all of the above

No idea, but apparently 75,000 fans there would need policing, traffic control etc. Maybe screws up all the teams' shipping equipment to the next race?

Surely in 70+ years they could've come up with a better contingency than that shambles. Thought Lewis spoke well on the money motivation.

Who would have thought it might rain at Spa... It's basically unheard of!

This should see people losing their positions. With the billions going in and out of F1 how hard can it be to pay stewards and just have them there for the monday as well...

I dunno, the only time I went to Belgium it was absolutely boiling:lol:

Presumably it's more an issue with licences, permits or whatever from the council than paying some stewards. The logistics sound horrible, the more you think about it but yeah, this might be influencing tumescent online GOAT debates in 15 years.

Pretty much every problem they are facing now is self made. I'm sure Spa has nothing more important than an F1 race going on on a regular monday. They made the schedule themselves.

If actual torrential rain had damaged the track I'd understand them not having a satisfying response. But to call 3 laps behind a safety car a GP because their cunning plan didn't involve normal rain is pathetic.

(Never ceases to amaze how other sporting organizations make fifa/uefa look competent now and then)

Are people suggesting race on Monday actually thinking? Surely the stewards are the least problem. All the networks have paid and scheduled a particular timeslot, it cannot be just reshuffled - maybe for some sports only networks it is not that much a hassle - but in general it is a problem. Also, all the people in the crowd that actually have day jobs/school, and can't be excused for a F1 race attendance.

The point of a sport is the sport and not TV slots. Those TV slots got naught regardless if there was a race tomorrow or not. Actually instead of getting nothing they had to sell 3 laps behind a production car as their product today. Great stuff.

Yeah, you are quite naive. The money for this sport come from TV rights.

The point is, a race on Monday was not possible. I don't know whether a rescheduling could have worked.

It was a farce similar to that ferrari usa gp years ago

If you want to award the points just do it, no need to spend a day waiting about to run a few sc laps, dont treat people like mugs

If they couldn't race should have just cancelled it

And F1 wonders why it has issues attracting fans....
