Squad players need to be sellable like James not bloated beyond all credible value like Lingard. We need to keep the wages down and sell your Lingards with a buy back/sell on when they are moving into 100k a week territory as it clearly prohibits a future sale and makes players more than happy to sit quietly on their deal and not fight to play.
I just don't see where he gets minutes, unless he magically turns into a class DM.
There's so many players ahead of him in the positions he likes to play, he's got no chance.
He's not getting ahead of Ronaldo or Cavani or Martial or Rashford or Greenwood or Sancho or Pogba or Bruno and he shouldn't be given minutes ahead of Diallo or Elanga in my opinion.

He’s a good option to come into the XI when we can rest Bruno, Edi and Ronaldo especially for the cup games

Pogba would play there if Bruno was out. So Jesse is probably fighting it out with Mata to be 4th/5th choice there.
Considering Sancho unfortunately hasn’t worked out, it makes sense to keep Lingard as he knows the league…
As are Rashford, Martial, Sancho, Greenwood, Mata, DVB, Mata, Elanga and Diallo.
The idea underneath Mata still being in the team is even less clear, to be frank. We can easily play Mejbri those 2 or 3 times Mata will be used…
Which is why I suspect we may see him move in January for a nominal fee, which would give him time to work his way into the WC squad.
Considering the impact that Lingard had for West Ham, I'm really very surprised that they haven't pushed harder for a permanent deal.
I can only imagine that there must be a heck of a lot going on behind the scenes that us mere Muggles are not aware of...
Yeah Mata is in the same boat as Lingard for me I just don't see where either gets minutes.
Hes not. He’s going to be coming in cold out of form and on disproportionate wages. Those slots should be going to youngsters returning from loans while we decide whether to stick or twist. The fact he’s still here is ridiculous really. West Ham have clearly had the money but even they can see that as a starter he isn’t value for money on those wages yet we are happy to have him as back up and leave other areas of the team to chance. Hopefully the club is learning lessons as these things pan out.
I hope Ole saying Lingard would've started v Leeds was just him posturing to get decent money for him.
Lingard I feel will be getting any minutes that would've been offered to Donny, so not that many I'd guess. Donny might as well just not turn up anymore.
I just really hope we do not offer him a new deal as no one will want to pay for him next year, best to just let him go on a free or try to sell him for some cash at least in January.

With Mata, it’s not just “where he would get minutes?”, but also “why?”
He only plays in easy fixtures, but they are easy, so younger players may be used instead. And in harder games, he is never selected.
If it was indeed his decision to stay here Jesse cannot have any complaints when he gets zero game time,
In the so called prime of his career and chooses to chase glory from the bench rather than be key to a team who maybe won't be as glamorous as United,
I get it's his boyhood club etc and there is a buzz being at united right now with Varane and Ronaldo but your career as a footballer is so short surely you want to be playing as much football as possible rather than just feeling you are part of something without much contribution and he knows with the players in front of him his playing time will be so limited. Also don't believe United would price him out of a move either.

The only difference being this is likely Mata's last year before he retires and becomes a club ambassador or coach in some capacity. Lingard will keep playing. So I am much less concerned about Mata's contract. Agree about the playing time though.
If he stays, he will get new contract. Maybe he is aiming for that. That is what we do. You can't go for free from Man Utd
I think a part of the reason why clubs may be hesitant to pay a significant fee/wage to Lingard is because most clubs might be aware he just isn't that good. Lingard has largely been crap for most of his career, with that period at West Ham more of an outlier. I doubt even Moyes expected that it would have gone that well. Any interested parties probably think it's unlikely that he recreates that sort of form again, which I am inclined to agree with. I highly doubt if Lingard does change clubs he ever performs like he did for West Ham last season again.

siting on the bench/not making the squad is depressing and ultimately ends in frustration and disappointment for all. This is more about sitting out the last of a ridiculous contract no other club were prepared to match and hoping the club keep renewing him for some stupid reason like they have Mata and Matic. “Experience, good guy, happy to stay bla bla bla” If we don’t take up the option he’ll get higher wages on a free next summer. It’s all about money. If playing football or playing for England mattered he’d be gone. If he’d longer than a year left on his deal he might have moved to play but he’s sweet where he is and it’s our own fault for overpaying him relative to his ability in the first place

Why give them hope IF they are not really in your plans? If Lingard is in Ole's plan then fair enough.
But as Rio said; many players are happy to be just in a team. We (fans) have opinion that every player's first priority is to play. Well, some players maybe just want an easy ride. Why play for Watford for 50k when you can be part of Man Utd for 100k and even play some games?
I hope he’s incredible here and does brilliantly, I just think he’ll barely play and he’s making a daft decision to stick around. Although he’s probably ahead of VDB in Ole’s mind.
He's not even a good squad player to keep around. It wasn't long ago where he went an entire year without scoring or assisting. He's proven time and time again he's completely ineffective against the low block. It's no surprise he did well at West Ham in a counter attacking set up but how many games do we get where we'll set up as a counter attacking side? A handful at best and even then, you wouldn't be wanting Lingard to come into the side.

He's either wanting to run down his contract or enjoys the attention and glamour that comes with playing for United and doesn't want to take a step down.

At the beginning of the transfer window, he said West Ham liked the lad, but once they were told Utd's likely valuation and the fact they wouldn't contemplate offering matching wages, they lost interest.
Jesse making it clear we wanted to stay at OT and fight for a place, closed off any possible move.

I don't mind Mata or Lingard wanting to stay here I just don't understand why in Lingards case especially he would want to.
It's not daft if he's in it for the fun and cash. I could see the club giving him another unmerited contract quite easily to "protect" his value.

It's funny isn't it that we keep protecting his value and nobody is bothered to pay his salary so we can't move him on. Both Lingard and Club are just too delusional about the player worth in the market.
Yeah, we really needed to be ruthless and tell him it's the reserves or a transfer. I've nothing against him as a person, but it's another incredibly stupid move by the club. The other transfer tap-in was shifting Bailly when he was having a moan. Neither is anywhere close to being good enough, not even as squad players.
I guess Jesse is fine being 5th/6th choice and the club is fine to pay his wages to be 5th/6th choice.

3 seasons ago the lad had a stonker of a season scoring the types of goals that had him labelled Messi Lingard. The next season he was awful, (it came out later that he was going through a hard time at home which affected his mental state) then last season in his short WH loan he regained his form looking a bit kind Messi Lingard again. I think if someone gets him they will get a good player. And if he stays for now, we get a good squad player.
Fact is what other club will give him a minimum of 60k per week? He can stay at united, earn probably 100k, not have to worry about his place, enjoy the atmosphere, train with top players for his boyhood club. He also gets to stay near his family.
His only negative would really be missing out on England, but bar the latest call up I doubt he has a major part to play.
what are his other choices? Play for a lower tier club on 40-60k, move away from family? Weight of expectation as a highly played player and senior pro? I can see why he might be swayed to stay at united, even if the glory will come from being in the stands and dressing room

Perhaps, mate, but better for him and United.
Just like when we renewed the contract of Phil Jones, it would be a waste of resources and space in the squad.
If we can't sell Lingard after his stint at West Ham, then we never will.
This isn't going to be Ole giving Jesse a second chance at United, this would be his 4th/5th opportunity to prove the doubters wrong. Just because he had a good spell at West Ham does not mean he will do it at United. Lingard needs to run at a defence which few teams give United the chance to do. He just doesn't fit our style of play.
