McTominay has surgery on groin injury

Pretty jarring reality when a bang average player like McT goes out and the entire midfield is fecked. We sit here with signings like a £90 million Pogba, £35 million Van de Beek, and a £40 million Matic and a £50 million Fred, but can't field a competent group between any of them.

Ridicolous and so frustrating. I still doubt DVB will start along Fred and no way Matic can play every game.

I dont remember us ever signing someone to cover injuries though despite the situation calling out for it at times.

I don't see it happening. The whole Southampton game regarding our midfield and Ole felt like Mourinho was in charge. And that he was trying to send a message, that he doesn't rate van de Beek and Matic is what he has to work with.

If that really is the sort of shit going on behind the scenes then our problems run far deeper than McT’s groin!

I’m definitely on the fence re Ole overall. And the way he’s used VdB so far is one of my bigger concerns. I’m an eternal optimist, though, so am going to hope that this season is the one when we finally see Ole’s plans for the poor lad.

Agreed. I just don't know how else to explain what Ole is doing with van de Beek. I was on the fence regarding Ole, but generally I think he has done/is doing a good job.

In all seriousness, is McT so good that we’ll miss him as much as some apocalyptic doom mongers on here say?

Obviously he isn't. But the Southampton game and the EL final have shown, once one of Fred and McTominay get injured, we've got problems and that's despite the fact that both need upgrading.

So this makes sense why he wasn't fit in pre season - yet we let him play against Leeds and then used him for 20 minutes against Southampton.

WTF is our medical staff doing?

When is he back? Newcastle game seems unlikely for him.

We need him more than we realise.

100%.

I think there's actually an argument to be made that how successful we are this season hinges on how much McTominay pushes on this season and how much he can adapt to a more out-and-out defensive role.

The outrage against medical staff by people who have neither any understanding of medicine or inside knowledge of the patient.

Superb.

Now off to the Ole thread to cast doubt over his ability with equally unqualified ire!

Who is raging?

There absolutely is.

In fact our entire season hinges on how well McFred do. Something not many of us wanted going into the season, regardless of how good a transfer window we’ve had.

We need Fred on his best form and Scott to really kick on, we need him to take a step up a level ideally if we are to mount a challenge.

But not against medical staff? At least I haven't seen any of that.
Oh it has when our injuries have hit hard. It always works like this: winning and are back room staff are ok, a couple of injuries later and they’re not back in 5 minutes, and our medical staff don’t know what they’re doing.

I see. Well that's just immensely dumb.

I agree.

He looked quality in the season opener, one of the best players on the pitch even. We've looked far less convincing in the follow up games where he was unavailable. I hope he makes a speedy recovery but groin injuries tend to be temperamental at best, so let's not rush him back until he's fully fit.

McT needs Fred as much as Fred needs McT. McT has not developed a good partnership with Matic or Pogba like he has with Fred.

It's because McFred are the only combination that doesn't leave a wide fecking gap from each other which renders the other useless at passing out.

Matic is too slow and gets crowded out before he's even available for the pass while Pogba is drifting out towards the wing and Fred/Scott isn't able to pass it to them because their passing isn't that good.

Odion Ighalo?

Will have to see it before I believe it. The groin is delicate, no way he recovers that fast?

Training can mean a lot of things; he could be some way off game fitness despite being 'back'.

As long as there are no setbacks and he comes back organically, it's a good to hear he's back in any capacity.

Thats crazy fast recovery on groin surgery. I'm assuming he's only doing light running or something?
Was only a minor op. This season depends on how McTominay and Fred perform. At least until January when I hope we bring in a top top holding midfielder.

He had the op just over 2 weeks ago. Doesn't matter how minor it is thats an impossible time-frame

He was training today, so was Telles. He was not playing with the ball though, so I guess he is a few weeks away still. The fact that he is training so soon after a groin op indicates that he is back in weeks, not months.

Its possible it was a groin hernia and he could be back end of Sep at a push
