Saw this today, is it true? If so thats pretty insane especially for a defender.

“Cesar Azpilicueta has not made a single error leading to a goal in his entire, 9-year, Premier League career”

Off the top of my head, he had a hand in a couple of errors that lead to Messi scoring in a 1-1 draw at the Bridge a few years ago, so I suppose it depends on what is being classed as an error. On the face of it, this sounds like something silly someone on twitter made up.

It was from GiveMeSports. Also the Messi game couldn't be in the Premier League…?

It's not a made up stat but its a stat that doesn't count mistakes as mistakes. It says Lindelof only made 2 mistakes that lead to goals, Phil Jones made only 1 mistake that lead to goal.

Apart from all that, he made a mistake that lead to penalty vs Sunderland and Chelsea lost 2-1 late in the game.

Sorry I misread the post, but it still sounds completely made up, to be honest. He's played in 300 PL games, and that includes some rather poor defensive periods. If they're just measuring giving the ball away directly leading to a goal for example, then maybe, I can't think of any times he's done that but that would also be a rather pointless stat since it removes other types of mistakes.

Yeah it makes a lot more sense that they're omitting other types of mistakes to get such a nice looking stat.

He is involved in mistakes or not one of the best bargains of last decade. Cost us some 7-8 mn and won all in club competition except club world cup hopefully will win it this time. Lb,rb,lcb best 1 vs 1 defender in my opinion. Great servant for Chelsea. Captain azpilicueta..

He was not substitute or also ran player but played most games in two pl winning campaigns, played finals in league cup,fa cup,Europa league, champions league and won it too.

20m a year for a sub.

And they've just been charged 25k by the FA for not controlling their players. That will teach them!

Next two PL games will probably give us a good indication of where we stand this season.
Should we win both, we might challenge realistically for the title. Of course, it's still early days, anything can happen, injuries and all that... but if we win both, we will be in a good position.

If Chelsea win both, they've got to be favourites at this early stage, as by that point it would be: 16 points, from 18 against:

Palace (h)
Arsenal (a)
Dippers (a)
Villa (h)
Spurs (a)
City (h)

That would be pretty insane, especially as the draw so far was due to going down to 10 men. Tbh, that start is probably the hardest one I have ever seen to start a season.

That said, I think they may beat Spurs but I reckon City will get at least a draw.

Worrying thing from a United fan perspective is Chelsea have played Villa, Pool, Arsenal and Palace and only conceded a single goal which was a peno. If Tuchel continues his hoodoo over Pep I think it will be pretty ominous.

Yeah.... but Villa is not the Villa from last season (they let me down in the Last Man Standing challenge :nono: ), and of course Arsenal is not the Arsenal. There are some question marks about Palace as well, so that string of opponents might look stronger on paper than in reality.

Villa were good (3-0 was flattering) but Arsenal & Palace have been shit for a while.

The worrying thing re Villa is they were actually very good and still didn’t score. If Tuchel keeps them as solid as they were last season and adds Lukaku’s goals it’s worrying. I’d say fault is on you re last man standing to be honest! I made the mistake of going Arsenal first game of season only to see Brentford batter them so at least you got further than me.

City and Pool have also conceded 1 each (both to decent teams in Chelsea and Spurs) whereas United have conceded to Soton, Leeds and Newcastle. Early days but we need to tighten up at the back.

To be fair to Utd, that's the only team out the 4 introducing a major new player in defence. That might sort itself out. Or, it might be Utd are just not quite as good as the other 3 off the ball, which is probably true.

Our issue last season was conceding silly goals to weaker teams (United had 44 GA, Liv 42, Chels 36, City 32 - made worse when you think Liverpool shipped 7 goals in one game/CB injuries and Chelsea did really poorly under Lampard). This year we've only dropped a couple of points at Soton but it is only GW4 and we've conceded in 3 out of 4 games.

I'm hoping now with Ronaldo and, as you say, Varane and Sancho bedding in we'll get a lot more consistency than last season. We bloody better had looking at those names and the calibre of player they are anyway!

The most worrying thing about Chelsea is how Tuchel has a clear system that he gets them to execute really well, even when they're having to make changes to the starting XI.

I think he currently has a record of 14 clean sheets in 23 games in the league. However, in three of those games goals where only conceded because:

Dippers this season - A peno, but where able to hold out a whole half with the kitchen sink being thrown at them.

Sheff Utd - Farcical own goal

WBA - Fell apart after going down to 10 men.

For me, they're the toughest team in the league to beat. Question is whether they will get enough goals to turn draws into wins.

I'll add that another rather farcical goal we conceded was Smith Rowe in that annoying 1-0 loss at home to Arsenal.

In all honesty though, I predicted United to win the title and that was before you added Ronaldo to the team. I think all 4 teams will be close together for a lot of the season. As UweBein said, we could have a clear idea of exactly where this team is this season after the next two games.

Tbf we were decent defensively even under Lampard once Mendy and Silva were in the side.

Ironically it was the attack that saw to Frank.

It will be a tight contest this season. However, I have always been of the opinion defences win titles. For me, it is usually the teams that don't concede much who can hang in games where they're playing poor that win it at the end as over a season it works out better for them.

Utd have a great chance this season with CR7 back, but the midfield and defence need to ensure that they do a better job at times of keeping it tight at the back when teams come out of the traps quickly/have their 10-20 mins in a game.

Chelsea are already the favourites but as you say once they've navigated those fixtures the easier games will come and then they'll be no looking back for them

With our wealth of attacking talent we're looking to just outscore the oppo, we'll be the league's great entertainers

I would genuinely love this, we've been way too pragmatic under every manager post SAF. If we're not winning things, we can at least go full Kevin Keegan.

My thinking is you can blow teams away with your firepower and your defence, in terms of individuals in the back 5, ranges from pretty good to genuinely world class. Yes you have a glaring weakness at the DM position but I think the strengths in the other areas can mitigate that weakness, and it's not like you're an absolute disaster there. Fred and Mctominay are very serviceable players.

I agree, however I think Chelsea are better equipped to deal with the likes of City and the Dippers etc. I mean, if it wasn't for the red card they looked like they would've won pretty comfortably at Anfield.

Our defense has come on leaps and bounds with Tuchel. But let’s give credit to Mendy, his save % is absolutely ridiculous. We wouldn’t have 23 clean sheets with Kepa in goal. It’s crazy how people here think he is our weak link.

They were poor offensively in the first half though. Weren't able to create much. Ziyech and Mount really have to step up or might as well give Werner a shot in support off Lukaku. I can actually see that working better.

It was no surprise the assist had to come from Azpi again.

I'm absolutely expecting that Werner/Lukaku combination to come through at some point. I'd expect him to try it against a fairly weak opponent though, at least at first.

He's not a big name still, I'm not sure how long it will take but he deserves way more respect than he gets at the moment. He keeps clean sheets for fun and barely puts a foot wrong.

Yeah I don't get how people seem to be sleeping on Mendy. Dude is probably the greatest addition to our team since Kante, especially when you consider who the alternative is. Only weakness he has is penalties though.

And i for one, think Werner, Lukaku will work very well. I long for another JFH, Eidur partnership, or Dixon Speedie

He's top drawer at the moment, Cech has a good eye for a keeper it seems. Good agility and a bloody hell of a shot stopper
