Sure. But this guy also doesn't last forever and he needs to be someone who makes good appointments too. It's just as hard to find a good DoF as it is to find a good manager. We're awful at finding the right managers, and we've seemingly been trying to fit a DOF type of role in with no difference. What it boils down to is whoever is part of the process, just keeps appointing the wrong managers. That same group would be responsible for hiring a DOF... so....not much faith in that.
If he needs time to implement his style surely he's a bad choice for an interim role?

He needs a project like spurs or arsenal, 2 years ago would've been a better time for him and if we turned him down then that says it all really.
So is that what Fletcher does? Or Murtough? Clearly not. United does what Woodward decides based on the best interests of Glazers, and his replacement will do the same. End of story. Everything else is just bla-bla-bla

Not if the guy you are targeting permanently in the summer plays in a similar way. You are essentially doing the work of what the new manager would only have a single pre-season to achieve over the next 5 months.

Some aspects they share. Pressing for example.
Back in 2019, it was a completely different ball game. The Mates FC doesn't want outsiders, and they had momentum to earn their bosses backing to oppose any threat to shuffle their roster.
The last time Rangnick coached his Leipzig team, despite being the third stronged squad on paper, averaged below 50% possession and 75% pass accuracy. Stylistically he's the polar opposite of Ten Hag, one coaches his team to methodically advance the ball and outplay the opposition, the other sees a misplaced pass as an opportunity. Which also leads to fairly different pressing situations and frequency.
That's why my answer to this is bring a COO, they are the specialist in building organizational structures. If I was the CEO, I would do next to nothing and just hire smarter people.
sorry for being precious about this, but a COO is Chief Operations Officer - a post that should be held by someone with deep technical knowledge about the company's operations, like a seasoned civil engineer in a construction company...building an organizational structure is the job of HR or what we call nowadays Organization Design & Learning Specialist (OD&L), reason I know is that I work in such area.

That may all be true, but you have to keep in mind that this United side has no basic understanding of pressing, possession, positioning etc, whichever way you look at it.
Our best bet for interim is still Rangnick from the names mentioned if we want to move towards a modern system. If we then hire Ten Hag or Poch is secondary. We wont hire a possession obsessed manager and then Ten Hag either. I dont consider Rangnick and Ten Hag the exact opposite. They are the exact opposite in the modern methodologies category, but still apply modern tactics. Ole and Ten Hag are the exact opposite. Same for Valverde.
No, I'm saying that I'm sure they have some sort of process similar to what a DOF does... its just not very good in execution. Or at least enough time hasn't passed to make a difference. Or they were all blinded by Ole. The DOF isn't the be all and end all, if they still target the wrong managers then you won't see anything on the pitch. A good manager is what makes the difference at the end of the day, whoever makes the hire.
But modern football isn't this one particular style. I could see Rangnick as a setup for Poch, but Ten Hag would have to throw almost everything that Rangnick preaches out of the window and start from scratch himself. For him - and speaking strictly in terms of tactical style here - Favre would be a much more natural predecessor, as Cruijff is his biggest influence.

How does this work then? Murtough would have identified Rangnick but surely he won't recommend him to Glazer if he wants to replace him in the summer?
I don’t see how this would be a bad move. We desperately need competent football people to take the club forward and he’s certainly one of them.
Then we use different terms, what you described as a COO(directeur des operations) is that what I describe as CTO(directeur technique).

I posted something similar a few days back and said it would be more beneficial for us to hire a coach who emphasises ball possession via zonal/positional control if the plan is to hire ten Hag.
Favre is a good candidate in that regard.
Poch doesn't do DoFs does he? Or at least footbally, interfery people upstairs?

Either that or Murtough suggested Rangnick knowing no way in hell would they take him up on it only for Woodward to stay and start exacting revenge on anyone who'd aligned themselves with Ole during the Ole/Woodward battle for the soul of the club. (In this hypothetical scenario, presumably Murtough, being 'a football man' had been on Ole's side)

No, problem. The roles are also fluid and there are different organizations. I went with something fairly basic and not necessarily "modern".

Much rather have Rangnick as a full-time consultant than Woody.
If it’s between Fletcher and Rangnick, I would go for Rangnick. Fletcher has done nothing to suggest he could do the role. Learning on the job should not happen at United.
