Kovacic won the PL's January Goal of the Month competition. As a reward they've given him a bottle of that minty shower gel which makes your balls go tingly.

I saw something on Twitter recently suggesting that Chelsea should focus more on less expensive signings because (generally speaking) the expensive ones don't work out very well.

What do the Chelsea fans here think about that? Kepa, Lukaku and Werner come to mind as recent ones who haven't had the desired impact on the first team. Havertz is another one who has been a bit hit and miss maybe so far? Then you've got Thiago Silva as an example of a player who was free but has worked out really well.

Do Chelsea spend big money badly?

Marina is great at selling.
Buying? Not so much.

Well, none of our £70+ signings have really worked out amazingly. There's only been 4, Morata, Kepa, Havertz and Lukaku. The jury is obviously out on Lukaku and especially Havertz.

Werner, yeah sure but there other players in his price range that have worked out splendidly like Jorginho and Kovacic. Chilwell looks like a brilliant signing too, albeit we need to see how he recovers next season and beyond.

I do agree with it generally though. We have a very spotty record with record signings.

In general, big money buys rarely work out for most clubs. On the other hand, Chelsea did find some good to great value with less expensive deals in the range of 25 - 50 million£ (Rudiger, Kante, Jorginho, Kovacic, Mendy, Chilwell). Put that together with their academy players and you get a really strong team. I definitely wouldn't say that they are bad in buying looking overall... However, you could argue they do need that world-class signing upfront who would elevate the team to its full potential and that's where they messed up so far (Morata, Werner, Lukaku, even Havertz).

Eh, personally I think it's far more dangerous to spend significant if not large fees on squad players long-term instead. Our summer of 2017 was disastrous because we paid 30m for the likes of Drinkwater and signed him to big wages - a contract so odious we've been completely unable to move it on.

Frankly when you have an academy as good as ours, squad players should more or less never be acquired via transfer (barring exigent and/or extraordinary circumstances). The ideal way to squad build is to target world class talent entering their prime years and to then augment it with the cost-effective players we have via the academy. What is reassuring is that this has generally been the direction we've moved towards since Conte left (for sure accelerated by our transfer ban).

As someone else posted, while she is terrific at selling, i do think a new chief exec should be appointed.

Every huge money signing is a risk though to be fair. Does it mean the player is bad? Absolutely not. Just looking at the fee rather than anything else.

We will never stop with the blockbuster signings though. Because we have an owner who wants them, and those kind of fees are becoming the norm slowly. If media are true our first signing this summer will already cost roughly 50-60m, Kounde.

I generally think Kepa is a very good keeper, despite being really annoyed with him in the past. Havertz will eventually be a star IMO. I think he has had a less than ideal start to life in London aswell.

Silva is just brilliant.

Isn’t it the same with United? Pogba, Maguire and Sancho have all disappointed.

Currently playing against Al Hilal from Saudi Arabia. Free to view on E4 in the UK.

I mean sure however I would say its a bit early to write off Sancho who is actually coming into form at the moment and has only been at the club a few months.

Using that barometer Havertz has been utterly awful.

Havertz scored the winner in the Champions League Final. Think that buys him a lot of time.

If it’s too early to judge Sancho, it’s then too early to judge Lukaku. Sancho certainly didn’t look as though he’s coming into form last night. I think most impartial observers of Sancho would agree that he certainly hasn’t come close to justifying his fee. However, I would say the same about Lukaku.

Screamer from Lukaku!!! Golazooooooo

Seriously though, deserved lead. Nice confidence booster for Lukaku.

HT: Al Hilal 0-1 Chelsea. Lukaku.

Havertz and Ziyech are playing really well.

Lukaku has played in the PL for years and is an older seasoned professional. Sancho hasn’t played in the PL and is 21 years old.

Compare them if you like but its a bit silly to do so.

Most impartial observers would have been observing Sancho for longer than just the last half-season and would know that he's a top young player whose fee was well justified. They'd also agree that he had a perfectly fine game yesterday in which he was probably the best performer in a team containing a number of superstars and similarly expensive players.

As for "too early to judge Lukaku", a healthy

We're champions of europe and currently have one foot in the world cup final.

If we're not good, what the feck is everyone else?

You literally started in the semi final

As far as the CL goes. Anyone can win a knockout tournament, a true reflection of a team's quality comes over a full league season. I’d have you as probably top 10 in the world.

Sancho would have to have only one leg to be as bad as Lukaku :0(

I love to take shots at Chelsea as much as the next non-Chelsea fan but come on.

Only City and maybe Bayern are clearly better right now. PSG and Liverpool are around the same level and everybody else is well behind them.

I'd say at least Madrid, Bayern, City, Liverpool and PSG are above them currently. Be tempted to say Inter too.

They are on the level of Atletico, Juve etc.

Well put. It’s a pretty odd comparison although some Chelsea fans seem a touch jealous the player asked to move to United over Chelsea so I assume that’s part of the issue.

This take is fine as long as you keep the same energy if/when we start to beat those teams. I saw a lot of people say we had an easy road to the CL last season because the Madrid teams are shit.

Yeah of course.

Every time I watch you it's just a massive struggle to create, it's so frustrating.

Atletico and Juve are really poor this season. Juve has been doing all right recently and grinding results somehow, but they are not good at all. And Atletico is just so dreadful, they didn't deserve to make it out of that group stage. Porto should have got that second spot. Even Milan was better than Atletico.

Bayern, City, and Liverpool are the only teams superior to Chelsea currently. I'd put Chelsea in a close second-tier at about the same level as Paris, Real, and Inter.

Then I'd have Ajax, Napoli, Dortmund, United, Arsenal, Juve, Atletico and others... clearly behind Chelsea's tier.
