I seriously don't understand how Chelsea continue to start Lukaku. All their best football since Tuchel arrived has happened without him. Even this season when he picked up the injury.

Price tag. Same thing happened here under Mourinho

Yep. Havertz central makes them far more dangerous for me but Lukaku is a big name and very expensive player to essentially acknowledge as a rotation option.

100 mn investment. Werner not even able to put fight for his place. He is lot worse than Lukaku. Havertz injury and COVID problems. Mount also not fit enough have niggles and COVID. Only ziyech performed okayish from our attack. Pulisic also not performed well. So forced to start Lukaku in my opinion.

I know its a bit of a tinpot trophy but I'd love to win it. :)
If we win it, we're world champions and I will let everyone know it.
be nice to win it, but really i couldnt care a toss.

Its pointless
As someone whose team is **ahem** as of this moment still the sitting Club World Champion :wenger:
I can only tell you to enjoy!

For me these games were always (I say always as if it's a regular occurence and did not just happen twice! :D) wonderful, feel-good occasions, for the following reasons:

1) At the latest by November, the fact that you won the Champions League has faded from the system, the new season is a grind, it's unkown what it will bring, and everyone is focused on the week-to-week, only interrupted by obnoxious international breaks
2) At the same time, because of its insignificance to anyone but the participants, the CWC tournament is not on anyone's radar at all. It only enters the horizon at some point, first merely as a perceived nuisance in the league calendar - fans wonder "Eh? What is this? Why are these league games being postponed?"
3) Then you realize that you are, in fact, playing the Club World Cup, because you are actually the reigning Club Champion of Europe! What a great thing to remember!
4) and then, the tournament is just a wonderful thing. It's actually involving the whole globe! The winner is officially the best club in the world! And when else do you actually get to play these wonderful teams, from Africa, from South America, Asia, from Cairo, Casablanca, Rio de Janeiro, Buenos Aires, Tokyo, what have you, in a somewhat competitive setting?
It's something special. You earned it for yourselves, like a nice holiday after a hard year of work.

I get this and its probably true but we paid £70m for Havertz and Tuchel has not problems rotating him in and out.

This was nice to read, thanks.

I'd also add that a break in being really worried about results and just watching Chelsea in a competitive game without that much riding on it for me is a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the season.

You can afford to have Havertz unhappy, he is young and he has a normal salary. You can't afford to treat Lukaku the same way, he is too expensive to become a reserve.

He is a big signing. You have to try and make it work.

Resale value.

With Lukaku, not only you're losing up front money (transfer fee and weekly wage) if you have to move him out now. You may be forced to subsidized the remaining of his contract, so his new club can afford his wage.

Young players like Havertz, you can risk selling him for loss of transfer fee. Unlikely for you to have to pay to him to get rid of him (subsidizing the remaining of his contract).

He is a big signing and a mediatic figure. You have to try and make it work.

Looks like he's a massive bottleneck on the club.

Chelsea can't afford to lose Havertz because he's pissed off about his minutes because Chelsea feel like they have to play Lukaku in every game. There were stories about unhappy attacking players a few weeks ago (rumoured to be Pulisic, Werner and Ziyech), but who knows, could be Havertz too. Havertz is 10x more important to Chelsea's future than Lukaku. Losing him because we signed Lukaku would be a travesty and one of the biggest transfer feck ups in the history of the game.

So many chances missed. It is difficult to comprehend how a professional footballer could not get a foot on that pass to Lukaku that he absolutely whiffed. He did then go on to have a nice shot blocked by the keeper and the one he made. We have too many players that hesitate to take a shot.

I'm struggling to think of a bigger net negative to the club ever.

I thought Torres would be as bad as it would ever get in that regard but this is 100x worse. It's actually staggering the amount of ways he is and can hold us back.

At the start of today's coverage they showed the UCL final on repeat and it was actually tough to watch back in many ways purely because having Rom on the pitch will very likely stop us giving a good go at defending the trophy let alone actually doing it (i genuinely think we'd have a chance with Kai up top which makes it all the more frustrating).

Really surprised to hear Chelsea fans going against him and saying he's taking the club back rather than forward. I thought it was mostly piss taking from United fans before with the Lukaku comments but Chelsea's fans are now agreeing.

I didn't want him in the first place.

Everything I'm saying now I said when he was at United (which funnily enough a few United fans who were adamant i was wrong and/or saying it out of jealously are now firmly on the same page).

The day he leaves will be up there with a trophy win.

I wanted it to work, but there is no denying it is a square peg in a round hole.

No matter how poor Werner has been for us, his style helped us break defenses and complimented our team more than what Lukaku brings to our team. I said it when he signed, it’s not a reaction to his form because Werner hasn’t been great either. In fact he has been worse than last season.

In the game for third place, the champions of Africa Al Ahly are destroying Asia’s champions (the team that Chelsea faced in the semis) Al-Hilal 4-0.

Last year Al Ahly lost the semis to Bayern and then won the third place game against Palmeiras.

Chelsea’s game against the Brazilians won’t be easy.

After Palmeiras semi final, nobody is expecting and easy game. I watched the semi and they were well organized and aggressive on the attack, they also left themselves open defensively.

There's no way Chelsea win. Looking at the videos the club are releasing, the players are on a nice little holiday.

The Brazillian president has publically commented on this game, they takes this nonsence pretty seriously.

It's sad you see this as nonsense. Chelsea are there to prove that European club football is the best in the world. How dare you not taking this seriously?

Palmeiras are the Brazilian Burnley it seems. I have never seen a team give Thiago Silva this much time and space.

It's nonsense. Just a bit of fun for the clubs from outside Europe to get to play 'competitive' games against a big European side and potentially get some highly dubious bragging rights.

I've given this some careful thought and have come to the logical conclusion that this is the pinnacle of the game.

You might be joking but I was ecstatic when United won in 08! It’s a brilliant concept.

Soft pen that. Ball slightly brushed his fingernail.

Pretty toothless performance... 2 shots on target. The usual essentially.

Ziyech will come on? We get 5 subs? Kepa if goes to Pens ?
