Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

Watch them break off peace talks and say they won't restart till biden apologises

Russia murder thousands of women and children a day, however, a couple of words against them, is the worst thing on earth apparently

Anything that isn’t doing this…

If you still don’t understand, please PM me and stop detailing the thread.
I know that definition. But it's not what the other thread was created over. Nobody ever talked about other wars around the world in this thread in order to minimise Russia's invasion or Putin's crimes.

But, fine. If you want to retrospectively change the reasons for splitting the thread, I'll pretend to agree.

@therecount: President Biden: “I think [Putin] is a war criminal.”

Yet another instance where Biden provokes Russia.

I knew Putin was right to start the war. Completely justified.

But the reference to 'Freikorps' was introduced out of nowhere. If I say that Kharkiv reminds me of Aleppo, does that open the door to discussions of the Syrian War?
How exactly they draw the line depends on how much the mods like you. You've been around a long time you'd get away with a lot I expect! :D

I’m sure you understand the difference between, say…

“This is awful, it reminds me of/parallels may be drawn with the invasion of Iraq…” and “This is awful, but what about the invasion of Iraq?”

As a historical analogy to a directly relevant and comparible event in post WW1 Germany, I think it is relevant. Given that Putin has levelled Syrian cities in the same way that he is levelling Ukrainian ones, I would say for me that point is well made. Both events speak to the potential next steps of a dictator which could impact millions of people living in a democracy.

These places are being struck due to the imprecision of the weapons, yes? Surely they're not being targeted...

Infants, toddlers, grannies, pregnant women - they don't care. The name of the game is to terrorize the population into fleeing the city and/or for the mayor to surrender. Its the final piece required for the landbridge to Crimea.

Of course it's targeted. They did the same in Chechnya and Syria. When the WHO or UN got coordinates for hospitals or health care facilities in Syria to avoid, the Russians bombed them. Just like when they have repeatedly attacked humanitarian corridors. Accidents can (and do) happen, but the leveling of cities and targeting of hospitals, theaters labeled "children", apartment buildings, and civilians driving down the street demonstrate Russia's tactics are intentional.

The US, British, French, Israelis, Chinese, Indians, and others have adapter kits to make their dumb bombs into precision guided munitions (JDAMs in US terms). Russia doesn't have them despite having the technical ability to make them and the fact that they are relatively cheap ($25k). At best, Russia is showing a reckless disregard by continually dropping dumb bombs in urban areas, but the reality is that this is the Russian strategy. Murder thousands of civilians to coerce the Ukrainians to surrender.

Who could believe for one second that Ukraine was like "Russia is too simple to handle, lets attack Belarus".
To be fair, if I was Ukraine I would consider Belarus to be de facto at war with me since Russia used its territory to invade from.

Obviously but there's less than zero interest for them to attack Belarus. On top of being stupid from a military standpoing, it would totally shatter their "we just defend our land, they're the attackers" (legitimate) propaganda.

Not sure what to make of this

Seems like Russia's first attempts at a false flag attack on Belarus to spur the Belorussian soldiers into action didn't work so Russia is going for more bombs. Based on reported sentiments from the Belorussian military, it seems like the soldiers don't want any part of the war, but Putin is trying to push them into it. Lukashenko seems to be trying to avoid it since he likely worries about the domestic response once his military is in the field or decimated.

But you would attack the Russian air force assets in Belarus rather than bombing towns and cities. Bombing those planes won't move the needle with the Belorussian military or people though.

Ukraine attacking Belarus territorty makes no sense whatsoever.
