F1 2022 Season

Most peoples arguments in this thread seem to revolve around 'because it's been around for ages' as if that gives you a free pass to be boring.
What has that got to do with what he said, which isn't wrong and hasn't been in years?

Doubt it's even true that 'most' people have said 'because it's been around for ages.

If there was a way to hook you up to what a driver of your choice sees and feels during every lap, including the bruises from crashing the car then maybe it'd be more of a spectator track again, as it is it isn't on TV. Maybe if we got an invite to watch from the back end of your yacht it'd be worth going.

I'm not sure what your first line means, I literally answered his question. I should have expanded by saying those who oppose its removal seem to say because it's been around for ages (history, prestige, all fluff words for it's been around for ages). The race itself in the modern day offers nothing in the way of entertainment value to the spectator which is a large part of what the sport is intended to do and the cars aren't suited to the track. Feeling how hurt they get wouldn't change that. Qualifying is entertaining, but that's not the race.

I'm not sure really, I think I must have been putting the right words in the wrong order but I mostly meant to agree with you. I know you haven't got a yacht. Well I didn't mean you, you might have one for all I know, but I meant the generalisation of people who go just to drink prosecco and spend their time with girls in bikinis while a race happens to be going on somewhere in the background, it's why @Sassy Colin goes. The only thing that is genuinely interesting about the race is the drivers point of view, selling that 'experience' would be the only way to keep it at all interesting but maybe the 'feeling' of the injuries is going too far. Maybe. Who knows?

You could probably achieve it tbh. I saw a video where Andy McNab set up some mad tech with a treadmill you can move 360 on, an xbox kinnect controller to detect crouching and jumping and then a ring of paintball guns in front of him. They made it so that every time he got shot in Battlefield a paintball gun fired at him directionally. You could probably sync that up to F1 and when they hit a barrier you get lit up by paintball guns.

That could work, buying into that would be like putting your money where your mouth is, a good addition to Fantasy F1. I was looking at something the other day that is a sort of therapy device for arthritis (don't all laugh at once you shits) that works using compressed air. This was for someone with smallish hands so I put my big plates of meat in which is basically a glove and apparently it's meant to massage each joint and finger independently. Effing thing effing hurt and wouldn't effing stop until it had gone through its cycle and it really gripped the hand so it wouldn't release you. Make a suit out of that and there's all sorts of options you know? No, before you ask, I only put my hand in. But I did think about it.

I wouldn't like to see Monaco go, purely for the history of it. It's often a pretty shite race alright, and I'd like for them to try something different to make it a bit more exciting (like that joker lap thing), but I wouldn't want to see it off the calendar.

People like it because they are told they're supposed to like it.

You can appreciate the skill and concentration levels required to drive around there for 90 minutes and not crash, but it doesn't mean it will translate to a good spectacle.
 
Why do people like Monaco apart from its history? Literally not much overtaking and action. Just following around all race long till the pitstops.
Think you will find most dont actually like Monaco.
I have said before that history should not make something a given, but this is an exception, this history behind Monaco, being part of the Motorsport Triple Crown.
Unless its wet Monaco is a dreadful track, with not a huge scope for improvement.
 
I would happily see Monaco go. Spa, interlagos, monza, suzuka, Silverstone and Montreal are untouchable imo.
 
I love Monaco.
I love everything about it. I know overtaking is impossible but maybe that's why I find it so fascinating, one small lock up in qualifying, one touch of the barrier in the race, one slow or wrongly timed pit stop and you can go from winning the race to nowhere.

That and the atmosphere and history sorrounding it, it's one of the race weekends I look forward to most
 
With the new designs I wonder if we can see an overtake at Monaco out the tunnel or even before the first corner. Wasn't that long ago I remember Kimi managing it.

Mercedes are set to make the first major hardware change to their car this weekend in Melbourne. We expect to see an all-new rear wing at the very least and possibly some accompanying changes to the floor.

These are the first of what the team hope will be a development programme that can access the potential they believe is within their W13 design. But it is only a sticking plaster-type mitigation of the underlying aerodynamic problems, for which a deeper solution is required, and which the team is researching.

That new complete floor redesign cant come soon enough for Mercedes. They will get around the porposing issue eventually and unlock the potential in the car. I wxpect Aston Martin and Mclaren to similarly have a performance jump when they get over their porposing issues.

Crazy isnt it? RB got to be the favourites this weekend. They have the least draggy car, though ferrari have the best power delivery across the corners and straights. Hopefully another epic leclerc and max battle and hopefully sainz and perez can keep in touch andnget involved as well.

Just on the Monaco point, I know a famous corner but after the tunnel they have that chicane. Couldn’t they just eliminate that so it’s a straight run to that currently fast but could be made to be slower left hander? Longer straight and with DRS would give at least some overtaking chance?

The drivers don't even like Monaco, they like winning there, but the actual racing is a different matter.
 


The Australian GP selection sees a twist where Pirelli has selected C2, C3 and C5 where they have skipped the C4 compound owing to the revised layout at Albert Park.

So thats C5 - Softest, C3 - Medium and C2 - Hard.

Do they normally skip a compound like this? I cant recall the last time they did. The delta between C5 and C3 could be huge, never mind delta between C5 and C2.

Usually, the choices is straight three compounds, but it is for the first time in many years that they have skipped one compound in between. Pirelli reckons it is the best solution as per the simulation numbers they have received from the FIA and the F1 teams.

Apparently the reason for 4 DRS zones is that unlike jeddah and bahrain, the nature of the circuit means that a car that has been overtaken cannot re-take its position back almost immediately. So 4 DRS zones have been added to compensate according to a The Race article.
