I honestly don’t get how all sense of perspective and relativity just goes to the wall with United. Any time we don’t win it’s a moral outrage and everything and everyone at the club is broken. We’ve finished 2nd twice in the last 4 years. We’ve been to umpteen semi-finals and a final in that time. We’ve finished ahead of high spending Chelsea 3 of the last 4 years. Was anyone bleating in the media about why would Tuchel want the Chelsea job when he took them over in 8th? Leaks everywhere about how they disliked Lampard and his methods - was there a meltdown every day on every media platform telling them all to get out of the club? The fans even had a little protest in support of Lampard. What about klopp at Liverpool? Had achieved feck all for decades. They were 9th I think, 6th the previous season and had lost to stoke 6-1 on the final game. Total disarray. Was the media actively telling anyone linked not to join? It’s been a bad season. Other clubs have bad seasons. I saw Gullit say it’s a shit job and the big problem ETH will have is that the former players like Neville, Ferdinand and Scholes are constantly on TV saying how shit everything is and you’ll get zero time before the pressure builds - and he’s right. I’m sick of listening to it all. You get more time and more money than any other club outside of City and the project of restoring a huge club to former glory. And if it goes wrong nobody blames you. It’s a dream job.

The idea of Rangnick telling ETH not to come is incredibly illogical. Rangnick will be working for the club, his role to aid in getting the club back to where it belongs. If ETH is the best man why would our own employee tasked with improving us dissuade that guy?

I think it's well known we've stood still post-Fergie while other clubs have taken strides forward (new stadia, new facilities, modern backroom operations etc.). Klopp joined a club that on the pitch were a pile of shite but he and the powerbrokers there obviously worked on a blueprint that would take them back to the top table and it worked. Chelsea you could argue is a questionable place for managers to go as they're so short-termist, there again they have that free hit feel you allude to in your last couple of sentences as everybody knows you could be out on your ear after the slightest rough patch and no-one will think too badly of you.
I think coming to work for United as they have been post-Fergie has been a poisoned chalice to be honest, given the Glazers' sole focus on commercial matters and the countless clueless footballing decisions that have been made. I don't think pundits have been wrong to point that out, but equally the suggestions that top managers shouldn't want to take the United job is ridiculous too; of course they should relish the challenge of getting this club back on its feet and as you say in the climate we're in nobody would think the worse of them if they failed.

Surely you can understand the gist of his point though? Or at least understand that ETH is intelligent enough that he realises he’ll just be another a failure if he doesn’t get the root and branch changes he thinks are necessary. The only other thing he I can think is that he may be being sounded out by someone like Man City for a potential start at the beginning of the 2023/24 season. Be honest, if you were a genuinely ambitious and neutral manager what would you do? Join Utd in summer of 2022 despite your misgivings, or join City in summer of 2023?

Yes the Org structure hasn't been great, but guess what, that can be changed easily. In fact, it has actually been changed recently but a changed org structure doesn't instantly translate to improved performances on the pitch, which many people seem to find hard to grasp.
