Investigating war crimes is done not only to put Putin in Putin. First of all, they need to identify all of the victims and this is a part of it. Secondly, it’s not just Putin who is responsible — and there’s a high possibility that in the future they would be able to hold at least some of them (be it soldiers, politicians or propagandists) accountable.

If the Ukrainians can continue fending them off, it will buy a bit of time for the howitzers, switchblades, and other new weapons to make it to the frontlines.

And unless all preeminent members of the Putin regime commit seppuku, they will remain targets with international warrants on their heads for a very long time. A good chunk of the conditions prior to a relief of sanctions upon Russia probably include extradition of specific people formally identified and accused of war crimes. We have seen that scenario unfold right after the Kosovo War as the then-new Serbian government got rid of Milosevic and many military officers who explicitly had their hand on genocides.

Still a good thing that they will not be able to travel freely. Many Russians involved in this (colonels etc) are very rich, with houses and family in the West.

You don’t need to be Napoleon to understand the symbolic importance of whether or not the Russian flagship was sunk by Ukraine.

Now Ukraine's National Security Council Secretary Oleksiy Danilov has said Russia attempted to break through Ukranian defences "along almost the entire front line of Donetsk, Luhansk and Kharkiv regions".

"They began their attempt to start the active phase," he added, in comments that were televised.

He said Russian troops had captured the town of Kreminna, about 50km (31 miles) northeast of Kramatorsk, but Ukrainian troops were "holding the line" in the other areas."

I agree it matters a lot for the Ukranians fighting but that was not what I was disputing. My main point was that I had colleagues who both support Ukraine argue how it sank. It's irrelevant to us, we are not there fighting, the majority of us know nothing about military tactics.
 
I'm obviously not sharing the videos here but god damn, Mariupol is an absolute meat grinder. Piles of dead fighters from the Russian side, presumably separatists.

This is such a weird take. You’re in a thread dedicated to following the Ukraine war and a warship (even ignoring its status in the fleet) sinking is hardly difficult to comprehend even for civilians.

The Russian ship is meant to float, Ukraine sank it…

This all started because I agreed with a post that said something in the lines "all that matters is that it's sunk, how doesn't matter." Now some people can't take that I honestly don't care how it sank as long as it's gone. I don't give a shit how the Russians lose this war as long as they do.

Rewarding warcrimes. It is attempted genocide and those that downplay this are complict.

I guess most hope it was the Ukrainians because it would show they have the capability and it seems a much more likely way to inflict further loses than crossing our fingers for more ammunition ‘accidents’ on many more ships. Agree we all just want the war over and Russia out of Ukraine but the context is important, one scenario is just a random act of incompetence from the Russians and pretty meaningless, the other is Ukraine successfully defending itself.
 
Russians seem to be learning from their mistakes.

US believes Russia is learning from failures in north of Ukraine, senior defense official says

(CNN) The US believes that Russia is learning from its failures in the north of Ukraine, where they did not have the proper capabilities to sustain military operations, and applying those lessons to their new focus in the east and the south of the country, according to a senior US defense official.

"What we have seen over the last few days is them continue to try to set the conditions," the senior defense official said in a call with reporters on Monday. "We call it shaping operations."

"It appears as if they are trying to learn from the failed lessons of the north where they didn't have proper sustainment capabilities in the area they were about to operate," the official said.

I am not sure which one is better:

Option 1. Ukrainian missiles sank the Russian flagship.

Option 2. The Russians themselves sank the Russian flagship.

In my opinion, Option 2 is even better for the Ukrainians: they can still win without doing anything! It takes a special kind of idiot to sink his own *flagship*.

Assuming these units would be functional, it's possible they try to use them against Kyiv if their push in the Donbas gets stopped or repulsed. It may keep Ukraine from moving all of its troops east if they think this group could make another push.
