Roman Abramovich plans to sell Chelsea | SOLD for £4.25BN

@AFP: British businessman Jim Ratcliffe has made a £4.25 billion ($5.3 billion) offer to buy Premier League club Chelsea, his company Ineos said on Friday http://u.afp.com/wXtr

It's amazing how much money the government are gonna make for Roman eventually.

This Chelsea sale may either make them raise that valuation or realize they might be able to get good money for the club.

It’s odd that he would say that as when the question of buying United was out to Ratcliffe before he claimed there was no money to be made.
 
So now Jim Ratcliffe buys Chelsea and we remain stuck with the Glazers ad infinitum. Honestly, could this season get any worse.

Idle speculation but if as suggested the Boehly bid is chosen and Ratcliffe misses out I do wonder if Joel might pick up the phone and see if there is a deal to be made for United. The Glazers have seemingly been of the opinion that nobody would meet their valuation but this suggests there is at least one bidder who might and it is known that some of the family are quite keen to sell up. Not expecting anything imminent but it is suggestive that after this process the Glazers eyes may well have been opened as to how easily the club could actually be moved on if they decide to cash in and that being the case now more than ever is a good time to keep up the protests and let them know exactly where they can stick their ownership.

Honestly it doesn’t sound like any deal is close, unless I’ve missed something. Therefore, if this bid is real and at such an amount.. it’ll likely be accepted over all else. Unless the others can conjure up another 1.5 bill from somewhere. On top of that it’ll be Jim vs Consortiums and it would make it much easier to verify the source of the money and as well as the various background checks.
 
Jim knows its too late but showing his intent to make such a massive purchase piques the interest of those in Manchester, ramps up the protests about the Glazers with a potential Manchester United fan waiting in the wings to take over. Tinfoil and all that.
 
Ratcliffe mentioned that he feels London should have a club with the grandeur of Real Madrid. Harris and Blitzer have embarassed themselves (and made their position at Palace untenable) through this process by funding Broughton’s failed bid, so the only logical conclusion is that Ratcliffe buys them both out of Palace and we become as grand as Real Madrid. Possibly.

Matt Law is saying that the other bidders believe Raine have given the go ahead to Boehly this morning. It is still pretty fluid but the Ratcliffe bid seems to be being reported in a very misleading way. They are bidding 2.5 billion with 1.75 billion committed to developing the club over the next 10 years so in essence they are only matching the other bids but making a promise of higher investment into the club which may or may not materialize as there is no legal entity to enforce that spending once the sale is complete. The other bidders could easily claim their bids are 4.25 billion just by making promises on spending too and I guess that is where Raine would have to do their due diligence but at this point in the process and so far beyond the submission date and with the sale deadline looming they are more likely to tell Ratcliffe to get bent.

He missed the deadline for sure but there’s 2 things to consider here, IF this is legitimate.

1. He would not pursue a public acquisition of the club if he knew he had no chance.
2. He just casually dropped a bid almost doubling the current bids, a day or so after Roman reportedly requested the bids are raised by .5 billion.

I don’t believe this is a coincidence.
 
It is very odd timing with Ratcliffe's portfolio taking such a monster hit this year.

Reading between the lines he has done no such thing, the price he is offering for the club is 2.5 billion, the rest of his alleged bid price is actually future commitments for spending on the club.

I wanted to stay away from the Palace pair because I thought it was such a bad look to buy into a club and then drop them as soon as another club (a local one even) becomes available. Don't trust them and I'm glad it looks like we're staying well clear of them. Now they have to go back and deal with the Palace community.
 
This Ratcliffe guy was just about the only non-super-villain left who could've bought us isn't he?

Scouring the interwebs it does seem that the consensus view is that Jim is an attention seeking tart who is just doing this for publicity and Raine have already signaled their intention to move ahead with the Boehly bid and are in no mood to change course now. Matt Law is one of those pushing this narrative, not sure how plugged in he is with Chelsea but it does seem unlikely that after 2 months of vetting they would pivot to a new bid in a matter of hours so Jim's intentions are pretty suspect here.
 
So this Ratcliffe guy is a Chelsea fan, why do I always hear he's a United fan? I'm confused

Honestly, you can say what you want about your dreaded Glazer’s but they have spent huge amounts of money on players. So if we get that with our new American owner I’d be happy. We just have to hope that the people below him are actually competent at identifying players unlike yours.

After Werner and Lukaku, I hope he changes the people bringing in players. Havertz has had big moments in big games, but on a day to day basis, he has been underwhelming also.

It is indeed a strong dose of copium but I have a good feeling about it. Unlike other clubs who have gone through takeovers we have an extremely promising core of young players and experienced winners PLUS (and most importantly) a world class manager already in place.

We don’t need a massive overhaul this summer. Just 3-4 players in and we’re good to go.
 
Still don't get it. How and why are Chelsea going for £4b+?

The big difference is that United can spend so much because they have massive commercial and matchday revenues.

Chelsea's issue is that their wage costs are comparable to United and City but their projectable and sustainable revenues (ie, not linked to CL qualification and deep progression and therefore not variable year-to-year) are similar to Arsenal and Tottenham.

That's the circle the new owners will have to figure out how to square and its almost certainly going to involve cutting the wage bill significantly, maybe not immediately but eventually.

Yeah but you won't be getting free money anymore artificially inflating your status. You're lucky the billion and a half wasn't called in. Especially with the commitment to stadium development, expect a very different operating model going forward.

I think one of the things that interests Bohely is the media market for Chelsea. The midwest of the US has really blown up in the last several years for Chelsea. One of the ways that Bohely makes a lot of money from the Dodgers is media and merchandise deals in the US.
