Relegation Jumble Sale

Let’s not forget Liverpool bought Robertson from a relegated Hull - there are some gems to be found.
Sure, but more often than not relegation passes without any of the relegated outfits passing on players to teams in the higher echelons. There's a bit of a danger of picking up someone that looks stand out amid a sea of relegation fodder.

The thing that makes it a bit interesting this time is Everton and Leeds have at some point been a lot better than they currently are, so naturally there's a few more floating around that would make sense for better sides.

I wouldn't take any player from a relegated team. The players clearly weren't up for performing at the bottom end of the table when the pressure was on, so they definitely won't be able to handle the pressure at a club like United with huge expectations. Not to mention they would be coming to the club low on confidence.

These are not the types of player the squad needs to get the club back to the top.
Fully agree. It was obvious from the get go Keane would flop and crumble under the pressure.

I'm glad we let Liverpool have Wijnaldum too. He was a better fit for a club that's content with winning trinkets such as Champions League cups.

No one predicted what Klopp got from Salah. No doubt he would get the best out of Raphinha.

I’d take Raphinha in a heart beat at Chelsea.

No they didn’t think he would be as good as he’s been, but most people thought it was a very good signing. He didn’t get much of a chance with your lot, but he was great in Italy and, let’s not forget, he was a Liverpool club record signing.

Am I the only one that would consider bamford from Leeds given the lack of quality strikers available in the market

I’m presuming those suggesting DCL from Everton haven’t actually watched much of Everton this year. He’s been crap when not injured. As someone with a family member who’s an Everton fanatic, I’ve had to listen to rants about how crap he is for ages. Godfrey decent instead of Bailly or Jones.

Keane came to a United team that had just won the Premier League and was full of talent and strong characters. That is not the same as coming into a United team just off their worst season in PL history, where the team is disjointed. It is completely different.

Wijnaldum didn't start to perform massively until Klopp had his system in place for a few years and it can be argued that Klopp had him and many other players performing above and beyond their level. We don't know if the same will happen with ETH. Bringing players in from relegated teams in his first season as the manager is very risky as ETH will be expected to make the team perform pretty quickly.

You've failed to adress your initial reasoning for why you would never sign relegated players:

"The players clearly weren't up for performing at the bottom end of the table when the pressure was on, so they definitely won't be able to handle the pressure at a club like United with huge expectations."

This is simply bullshit and doesnt describe Keano or Wijnaldum.

You can come up with all sorts of reasons why Keane, Wijnaldum, Robertson were sucesses, but you dont mention the obvious one, that they were good players in a shit team.

I don't know how theres more risk in signing a relegated player, but let it be known you wouldnt want ETH to sign the next Roy Keane if he played for Burnley, because it's a risk according to your dogma.

Max Aarons, Pukki, Cantwell will all be looked at by PL clubs
Cantwell cant even get into the Bournemouth starting eleven down in the championship on loan, how does he feature here

He’s bang average. My dad is a Leeds fan so I watch them all the time. Bamford when Leeds got promoted from the championship he ended that season with the worst conversion rate in the league.
He did well last season stats wise but that was due to the way Bielsa played. Go look at when Leeds were top of the championship he was their top scorer and most fans wanted him gone.

You have named 3 players from a list of hundreds that have been relegated and have then went on to win league titles not long after. 99% of players in relegated teams don't go on to then perform at the elite level. Just because you are able to name a tiny proportion of them, doesn't mean my initial statement is incorrect.

Not to mention the 3 players you named have went on to be managed by 2 all time great managers and top 5 PL managers of all time.

I'd take Aarons from Norwich. Feels like he's made to play at the top end of the league, which is why he's been so instrumental to Norwich coming up every season.
Have you watched him this season? He hasn’t pulled any trees up and hasn’t always been picked.

Quite surprised how many shouts there are for Dennis here. Think he's the definition of a player getting overhyped off the back of a hot streak.

Most of them are shite.

Maybe richarlison as a stop gap striker?

Sarr is a quality player, and I really doubt he’ll stay at Watford to play in the Championship again. He did that once before already. Dennis is decent as well.

No one tops Raphinha though. That would be a great signing.

Never know what to make of richarlison- a very good player but a bit wasteful at times. Not sure if he could make that jump to the next level.

Cantwell cant even get into the Bournemouth starting eleven down in the championship on loan, how does he feature here
Don’t know what happened to him but he has ability.

Of all the options listed so far, I think Richarlison is the pick of the bunch. Maybe Gray as a rotation option. Raphina the same, I just don't think he's a player you can rely on every week and people only talk about him when he has a good week. I just don't rate Phillips at all. The likes of Sarr, no chance.

Wouldn’t mind seeing that Williams For Norwich come play for us

Based on their upcoming fixture, I can't see Everton staying up. The best of their lot and someone we need, Calvert-Lewin.

Feck no . Could do without a player who sulks when he’s hauled off / left on bench

They will be looked at by teams in the bottom half of the table.

Norwich players and ex players seem to get so overrated in general for some daft reason.

Cantwell couldn’t get in the first time and has been playing at Bournemouth.

Jamal Lewis is now second choice to Matt Target at Newcastle.

Buendia has done nothing worthy in his performance at Villa.

Godfrey at Everton with such a shire defence.

So Norwich have been confirmed relegated, and Watford are pretty much down.

It's a toss-up between Leeds and Everton for the third spot.

Are there any bargains that can be picked up on the cheap from any of these teams?

Can't see many I'd take from Norwich and Watford but hoping Leeds go down so we can make a double bid for Phillips and Raphinha. Would address a couple of our problem positions.
Patrick Bamford might be a good impact sub. This season he was injured for a few months, but season before he finished on 17 goals, joint 4th best with Bruno, Son, and Salah. He's 29 end of this year. Might be the kind of player to bring on in the last 20 minutes when you need a goal, he can pour 90 minutes of running into a 20 minutes cameo. He might have an escape clause if Leeds go down. It wouldn't quite be the super-sub Ole thing, but at 29, a striker can't keep the pace up the whole game.

Would bloody love it if they made that switch!

It'd be like switching peak Pamela Anderson out of Baywatch for (add unattractive name here)
I fear he has the right amount of raw talent and mentality for someone like Klopp to get a tune out of him.

why would he fit ?
Stylistically someone who cuts in from the right, with good dribbling ability and can generally beat multiple players at a time and is pretty quick as well. And gets into plenty of scoring positions while also missing or hitting the post a lot of times - which is something Klopp can possibly fine tune and get his output up. Overatll technically he's excellent. Also versatile enough to fit into that fluid front 3. Off the ball although he's a bit clumsy and aggressive at times but still can press and track back his opponent. Klopp would appreciate him having played under Bielsa and bring a lot of those qualities with him.

Don’t see Salah going and they’ve just got Diaz on one wing, think midfield is their priority.
Diaz and Jota can cover the left and central positions but in a situation Salah ends up leaving (he's said recently I think that Liverpool is not offering what he wants), they'd need a right sided forward. A front three of Diaz - Jota - Raphinha with the likes of Mane and Firmino knocking about can keep them going. Can't see many better options.

Unless someone is stand out - there is no point picking players from relegated teams. Not for what we want anyway.

Can't think of the last time that worked out. I know people will mention Keane, but that's 1 example in 30 years.

I'd definitely avoid Everton players. A team of that quality has no business being in the relegation zone. Some serious attitude problems I think.

For the sake of argument though, Raphina and Phillips.

Cantwell has been linked with United for ages and he will again.

Everton will go down

What do people reckon would he the fees for DLC and Richarlison? They seem to the obvious ones for clubs looking at Everton.

Raphinha is the one with the most upside from all the teams near the bottom. That relegation clause will definitely be met by someone if Leeds go down.

From the others - it'll be between Phillips, Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison, depending on who goes down. Probably won't be targets for any of the top English clubs though.
What's the clause? I don't see Everton caching Leeds so I'd expect him to be expensive.

Everton will probably want 50M for each of them but can't see anyone offering that. I sure hope Arsenal has buried the DCL link for good.

Seems too steep to make sense.

Richarlison is interesting to me as a 9. He's got 40 in 130 in the Prem at age 24 and many of those games are out wide. He's good in the air, could become a really good 9 I think in his prime.

Raphinha obviously. Don't think Phillips will come here. Newcastle seems like it would suit everyone for him, or maybe Arsenal.

I'd take Matthias Normann for very cheap as a backup deep midfielder to a real couple of signings. He can really pass the ball from deep.

Some players should look abroad. Dwight McNeil on a La Liga team that plays 4-4-4-2 could be really good.

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Dele Alli! he is full of ability, he would be so cheap, pop him out on a 3 month loan deal to a Championship club to get some confidence back, then he can be our super sub in a way that Olli Gunner was.

It's supposed to be a £25m clause in his contract becomes active if Leeds go down. Obviously he's a less appealing option if Leeds stay up.

Is Ben Godfrey average?

Yes. He's really fast but very error prone. I don't see him at United. I suppose his versatility counts for him. He's play RB, CB and LB this season. Raphina is the obvious one and Phillips. Richardlison too. Apparently Everton don't have relegation pay cuts in a lot of their contracts so it could be a big fire sale. Anthony Gordon is another I'd be interested in. He's one of the hardest working players in his position in the league. Exactly what we're missing because he plays for the team and with a lot of guts. There's a question if his on the ball quality is good enough but at 21 he's still got time to improve. He'd definitely bolster the squad at least.

Be like swapping Lingard for Dele Ali that. Worked with a lad who was a Season Ticket holder with Spurs and the consensus of his match going mates

- Good ability but played WAY above his station for 18 months under potch
- Lazy fecker who would not put a shift in when the chips were even remotely close to being down.

Not for me thanks.

Richarlison is an interesting one. Seem's a pretty mobile wide forward and no doubt has the ability to boil piss in the opposition, would not be entirely against that. Anthony Gordon on the other hand seems to have bags of skill and works his arse off every game. Good profile for ETH
