19 children and 2 teachers killed in Texas school shooting (24 May 2022)

Maybe the NRA and fellow repubs should suggest the way to stop thousands of mass shootings in America per year is just have one day of mass shootings unhindered? Give it a title like The Cleanse?

Just an idea. I reckon plenty of Americans would vote for it considering its their constitutional right to be right all of the time.

Strangely enough, you can.
The states are all different. NJ for instance is where I live and probably has the toughest laws around. No guns with more than a nine round capacity for both handguns and rifles which is a little misleading because there’s no limit on how many clips you can buy so if you run out of ammo you pop another one in. But they do an extensive background check on handguns. Why don’t on shotguns and rifles I don’t know but the process takes months. That’s about as strict as it gets in the US.

I believe there's still a ban on hollow point ammunition in NJ as well, unless that was repealed / expired.

Really? Wow, absolutely crazy.
Theoretically in some states you can. Just that it should cost a lot, I think 200 in taxes for each ammunition round.

You can also own a cannon. For what is worth, you can own a tank too, but you need a special license to own a tank with a working cannon. Hard but doable if rich and determined. https://aerocorner.com/blog/can-you-buy-a-tank/

To make things more interesting, you can also own a fighter jet. But it must be demilitarized (so no weapons etc) https://aerocorner.com/blog/civilians-fighter-jets/

You cannot own nuclear weapons in the US though. Those fecking Dem commies taking out our liberties. Our founding fathers made the 2A having the ICBMs in mind.

I encourage you all to check out the discussion forum on www.ar15.com if you really want to see the full scope (no pun intended) of how fervently assault weapons are defended by folks in this country.

that’s expired . You can’t shoot hollow point at range. That’s about it.

What would happen if I drive from Indiana to NJ with a licensed semi-auto 30 round weapon?

This is heartbreaking. Parents are getting swabbed to help identify the victims. FFS.

That happened that afternoon. The crime scene was that horrific that they couldn’t identify the kids through normal means.

Those look like M-4 or a variant (@Dr. Dwayne ?). That would be a solid platform. Pistols are vastly more inaccurate at any distance.

Just wondering if there's all that much difference in it, if the argument about waiting for better hardware holds up.

Christie admin get rid of that?

And to the bold: Well that's... odd. FMJ penetrates farther than HP, so it would be more likely to go through the backstop padding.

Lost count of how many long guns on cops I saw...
Everyone gets to LARP high-speed spec-ops dudes nowadays
Would a rifle even be any better than a pistol, hunting one target within a school building at short ranges?
As @calodo2003 said, accuracy is the big difference between pistols and any sort of weapon that you can shoulder. The risk is what happened at an LA mall a few months ago, where a shot can go through walls and still injure/kill someone on the other side if the wall isn't thick.

Wtf. And they just stood around for an hour doing nothing. Should be sackable behaviour.
Also, I wonder if race played a part in their decision making.

Is it reaching the stage where the US needs to be split in half, with the sane living somewhere safe and modern and the lunatics left to themselves in the asylum?

They could build their walls then. Hell those who want to live somewhere they can send their 7 year olds to school without being butchered would probably build the walls for them.

Marjorie Taylor Greene hinted at secession.

Those sheriffs and officers holding back parents were following a very coordinated instruction and doing it efficiently and without emotion. I was expecting something more slip shod but this was perfectly crafted. Hmm.

A medieval fundamentalist Christian theocracy state with thousands of nukes is bad news for the world. Especially if they are bordered with a prosperous rich liberal state, which means that a conflict becomes inevitable.

‘Don’t rush to attribute malice to that which which can adequately be described by incompetence’, or something like that is the quote I’m thinking applies here. If you look at the photo at the local swat team I posted earlier, they definitely weren’t all gringos.

Would they be able to keep the nukes? How long could they afford to maintain them?

Marjorie Taylor Greene hinted at secession.

She only wants it so she can keep slaves again.

The nightmare I am referring to is that of a full blown civil war. Of course there is already violence, political and otherwise, plaguing this country,

So what are you doing that is more effective? Stop preaching to me about how my way doesn’t work (I’ll not argue too much that it does) and tell me your better way of effecting change.
Like I’ve said earlier, a good place to start would be not giving your vote to those that lead us to this very situation in the first place. At the very least acknowledging that it doesn’t work.

Come on now. They didn't sign up for this. They expected to spend their days issuing traffic fines, playing with tasers, and shooting at unarmed black kids. Charging in to take down an equally well armed perpetrator isn't in the brief.

What I can't understand is the gun lobby. Is it really that big of an industry in a $21 trillion economy. How does it wield so much power?

It's sad how little some politicians get paid to be basically bought. Some people vote based on just a $10k donation. But the GOP also made 'pro guns' one of their few policies, so they don't need to be paid to float this bs.

Yeah that's the platform. Oddly they are a little bit long for what Simbo alluded to. Look like at least 20" barrels maybe even 24". Longer than what you'd like indoors. Shooter probably had a 16" because that's what most stock AR-15s are sold with. US Army mostly uses 14.5".

Just wondering if there's all that much difference in it, if the argument about waiting for better hardware holds up.

Ballistically it's a pretty even match. Cops edging a close contest on accuracy and muzzle velocity. Ergonomically and geometrically, shorter barrels have the advantage allowing for faster target acquisition and discharge.

Pistols and rifles are equals out to 15 yards or so. Pistols maybe having an advantage for those ergonomic and geometric factors noted above. Beyond 15 yards it's more difficult to maintain accuracy with a pistol for most people.

But for all of this, the cops had a numerical advantage and chose to protect their own lives for 40 minutes over those of the school children.
