Westminster Politics

Rees Mogg saying they only need to win by 1 vote suggests they're incredibly worried about this tonight.

Setting the bar incredibly low.

As much as I want him gone, I can't see it. The vocal support for him makes me think they are confident, the MPs wouldn't support him if they thought he was going to lose and make themselves sitting ducks

It’s an anonymous ballot isn’t it?

They can say whatever they want in public even if they want him out. Cover their own backs.

Which of the MPs tweeting support will stab in the back we reckon?

its a damning indictment of the state of politics in this country (and the notion of a meritocracy) when there isnt a single credible alternative to be the next tory leader / PM.
a leadership election with a bunch of very poor candidates fighting it out would destroy the party for a generation and they know it, and so Boris wins out. and no doubt he'll use it to draw a line under all the crap he's done, and spend the remainder of the term in full on campaign mode for the next GE. that doesn't augur well for the union, the poor or any other groups that the daily mail aint in favour of.

All of those who think they could get a promotion of Johnson leaving. So Sunak and Dorries won’t, but Truss and possibly Javid probably will.

Even then, that still makes them look bad. Publically supporting him and then doing the opposite just shows themselves up as opportunists even more. Either way, publicly supporting him and then him going makes them look daft, no matter how they voted

Its actually so infuriating hearing these guys say "Get on with what the people care about" etc. Are they that fecking stupid?

It doesn't harm them in any way because no one will ever know.

How so? Them publicly supporting him and then him losing makes them look stupid - doesn't matter how they actually voted. If they tried to remain on the fence in public then I'd think he has a chance of losing but them being so stupidly outward with their support makes me think they know he will win they won't look even more stupid and just at the level they are now

He won't lose. In any case, it becomes a guessing game. Noone will br able to point a finger at anyone.

Must be the first PM praised for making a complete balls-up of everything.

Is there a cure for brainwashing, I wonder?

Your point about brainwashing is an interesting one because any organisation that wants to do something relies on a form of brainwashing.
Advertising.
Using the press and media.
Denying the opposition the opportunity to get their views across.
And of course lying.
All forums of brainwashing. And all things this Tory government use on a regular basis.
Brexit was won because of brainwashing.
The credit for dealing with the pandemic was brainwashing, night after night on TV briefings.
And it has proven highly effective.
But.
The old saying is absolutely correct.
You can fool some of the people some of the time.
And the rest of the people the rest of the time.
But you cannot fool all of the people all of the time.
Boris Johnson take note

120-130 would be very damaging.

So Tories have 359 MPs.. Is it just a case of a majority with this vote? So he needs 180 votes to stay?

In that case, you're absolutely right, that's a very tight margin and would surely leave his position pretty much untenable.

239 to 120 ... that would be about two thirds... better than may managed

No chance Big Dog quits

They don't have a choice whether to show support or not. If you're in cabinet your loyalty is to support the leader and his cabinet. They'd have to resign to not back him and they're obviously not going to do that.

Everyone knows they're just tweeting what they've been told. There's level of support and most won't go beyond simple party lines.

A Liz Truss / Nadine Dorris premiership. Lets Have It. Burn everything and every fecker

If Boris wins the next election outright it'd be a miracle. He's already had many scandals, he's publically mocked, lost his party, and the economy is grim.

Those circumstances are the basics of most leaders losing office.

I knew that it would be the boos that did for him. Tory MPs weren't going to get rid of him for 170k dead, nor for the cost of living crisis, nor for his numerous lies and scandals. No, it'd be the prospect of losing the election and them losing their jobs that was their line in the sand.

I love how MPs are saying that Boris Johnson is the man to push the party on from the recent distractions, all of which were caused by him!!!

The concern here surely has to be that all roads now lead to Liz Truss becoming PM. She is monumentally thick.
