Westminster Politics

I can't speak for anybody else, but I'm sort of vaguely hoping for Boris to win tonight. Quickly followed by Starmer getting a fine and resigning along with Raynor, and Labour electing a sensible and likeable leader to take them into the GE.

However, I don't know who I'd like that leader to be and I'm certainly not optimistic.

I reckon if Starmer goes Labour will end up with Streeting. Or Nandy at a push. But are any of the options sensible and likeable to both the membership and the electorate? I am not sure.

That's the thing, I can't readily think of a Labour MP that I'd like to take over. But as you quite rightly point out, whoever it is has to appeal to the wider electorate.

Should Starmer go, I think Labour will go for Streeting or maybe Nandy

I don't think there is even a 1% chance Boris loses this. No way.

I genuinely think he’s going to call an election and gamble on the Durham investigation result. It’s his only route to survival if the numbers against are as high as rumoured.
I'd be surprised... he's got almost 2 years to distract people

Looking back if all the sunak stuff had not hit the press he would almost certainly be gone today ... can't help but feel that's not coincidence and he's going to carry on from one crisis to the next hoping he finds a favourable window in a year or so

I don’t see how he can govern with 100 plus MPs wanting him out and the inevitable landslide by-election defeats. He has to push the can down the road somehow and get a mandate to govern again.

And I’m in no doubt the Sunak leaks came from the office of Boris…

This is on the presumption he wins the no confidence vote otherwise he can’t call one as the queen will refuse.

If he loses the no confidence vote he is no longer Tory leader but still Prime Minister, and as such can still ask the Queen to dissolve Parliament. She cannot refuse.

I do not rate Starmer or the Labour leadership either. There are a lot of very poor politicians around.

A lot of people would say the same thing about Macron. Especially some of the things he has been reported as saying about Ukraine and Putin.

He has a majority of 80 though so unless that 100 mps are going to abstain or vote against government policy it probably won't impact that much day yo day

He's shameless... he's clearly gonna try try and ride it out with operation big dog 2... or 3... or god know how many now

I have emailed my useless Tory MP requesting he comes clean and tells his constituents which way he voted and for what reasons.
But he is the world's biggest brown noser and I am totally convinced he will support his leader. A typical career MP who has never had to go to work to do a proper job.
That is why I want him to do the honest thing and tell us why he voted as he did.

Okay…maybe he is in trouble

Listening to Radio 5 Live about 20 mins ago and they said that Johnson loyalists are very stoney faced and there’s a sense of panic suggesting the numbers are a lot closer than they were expecting.

Sorry I never replied to your PM about him. I read it while I was out and about and didn’t have time to reply.

You lads are clinging to the hopeless hope.

It's like Liverpool playing a league match lately they might concede first but you know they'll win.

Zero chance the dictator gets toppled from within

I want him to survive. It’ll be far more damaging for them in the short to midterm if he does.

Has a Tory leader + PM ever had a vote of no confidence and then gone on to win an election?

It was the end of Thatcher, Major lost in 1997, IDS was removed, May resigned a year later....

Anyone I am missing?

Best case is a super narrow win and he calls an election betting everything on a proper shit hand. He loses we get Truss or some other muppet. Keep him where he is.

Macron said they should not humiliate Putin so as to leave open the path to a diplomatic resolution. One may agree or not agree with that. Doesn't make him a bad politician.
My personal opinion is that Putin will not stop until he's achieved what he wants to achieve or he is taken out.

That’s a perfect comparison to be honest. I know it’s coming but I can’t help getting a little bit excited at the slight possibility.
