Can’t see him changing formation from his preferred 4-3-3/4-2-3-1. The way ten Hag likes to play in a 4-3-3 it can change during games into a 3 at the back… the DM will drop back to create a 3 man defence whilst the full backs are pushed high up, this will suit martinez as he can stay back in defence and he’ll also be comfortable pushing a little higher into midfield if needs be.

That would mean Martinez starting at midfield. I just don't see it, Ten Hag said at his time at Ajax that Martinez didn't had the mobility to play there, and for all the reports I've seen both Martinez and Ten Hag agree he's a CB.
Varane will definitely miss many games due to injury or fitness, but when he's fit he'll definitely play. Maguire has just been confirmed as captain so I doubt he'll be benched.
I don't know, it will be interesting to see how this develops, I think Maguire will be ultimately dropped.

I agree, Martinez is left footed so he'll obviously play on the left side. That's Maguire's place. Maybe Ten Hag only reassured Maguire's captaincy so he didn't disrupt the squad and create unnecessary discomfort.
But it clear Maguire's doesn't suits Ten Hang style of play at all, being that slow doesn't allow us to properly play a high line. Any player with an ounce of pace will leave him in the dirt.
That's why I think Martinez will eventually overtake Maguire's place.

Having Martinez and his ability to perform in couple of positions is exactly what we need, that will give ETH several options and our team will be unpredictable to the oppositions because literally all the oppositions in last 3 years were able to predict our formation and at least 9 of our starting lineup
I understand that both the player and the manager expressed their opinions that he should play CB but I can easily see him starting as DM when both Maguire and Varane are available and from what I saw (which was really less ) I feel he is the DM we need as he is aggressive and good with ball and short for CB in premier league ( thank God Burnley relegated ), however he seems smart to compensate his short height when he plays CB ..... I am really optimistic with this butcher

Oh we won't get rid of him until his contract runs out. He's an england international, he's on big wages and he's bang average.
He's became some king of a meme so I don't think any team would be willing to take him at his current conditions and I don't think Maguire's ego will settle for something less. We are stucked for another 3 years of him, hopefully the last two only as a part player.

Ten Hag fills me with so much confidence, I struggle to put my finger on exactly why outside of the obvious of his record but something about him just screams "top level, modern coach".

Wether we play mctominay deeper, martinez or de Jong… when we’re attacking and I’ve noticed it in pre season the full backs push high up and one of the mids drops back. De Jong likes playing this role which is why we want him so bad. Can create from deep.
That’s what he should be a rotation and squad player but like you said because of his big wages and his price tag he’s expecting to start every game but why shouldn’t we have a 80/85m player on the bench? City have a ton of expensive bench players. I think the club is just worried about all the negative talk about how an 80m defender who starts for England can’t start for one of the biggest clubs.
Playing for United is a tall order. Seems many here don't think Martinez is up for the challenge. Perhaps, however, he will reach greater heights than they anticipate.
Because we're not ruthless, and the "big signing fee must play and continue to captain the team" even is he's a complete liability.
Madrid has Hazard on the bench. I think Ten Hag will eventually bench him if Varane can stay fit. The problem is to do it softly so the squad doesn't get too unsettled. Stripping him off the captaincy and relegating him to the bench without an opportunity to play under Ten Hag would have completely destroyed Maguire's confidence.
Tells you exactly why he signed him and where he expects to play him....Said it all last season that we struggled badly when building out of the back down our left side b/c none of the CB's were left footed nor were they comfortable having to play extended passes with their left. Everything always went short to a CM or to the LB.

Ive said before i think TH had just started so the easy option was to keep Maguire captain for now. I wouldnt be surprised if this changes as the season goes, as i can see maguire on the bench and Verane alongside Martinez

I have to say, despite my reservations regarding his height and suitability to the PL, I am really looking forward to seeing him play. If nothing else it will be a joy to see an aggressive front foot defender after having to suffer years of watching Maguire & Lindelof’s wet tissue, deer caught in the headlights, routine every time someone runs at them.
Thinking about it, a Bailly/Martinez partnership would be brilliant to watch just for the entertainment factor alone. Not sure it would end well but it would be fun while it lasted.
On a serious note, I think a Varane/Martinez partnership makes the most sense on paper. Just providing the former can stay fit for more then 3 games in a row.

As things stand we have 3 midfielders (McTominay, Fred, van de Beek). Neither of Bruno and Eriksen will be playing in midfield.
We won't be playing 3 man midfield with that bunch of players.

I'm sure neither of them will be playing deeper on regular basis, the reason for that is we don't have a natural DM who can cover for them.
I don't think we will be playing Eriksen and Bruno at the same time, OR Bruno will be pushed forward as he's more of an attacker anyway (his effectiveness drops drastically around mid circle for couple of reasons).
So to sum up, even if we consider Eriksen a midfielder, I don't think we will be playing 3 man midfield because that leaves only one midfielder on the bench. So yeah, back to 2 man midfield IMO.
I'm sincerely hoping Lisandro Martinez can do the job I expected Declan Rice to do for us if he joined.
