Gay footballers | Czech Republic international Jakub Jankto comes out as gay

Babies are not born atheist, babies are not born agnostic, babies are not born believing in god(s)

They haven't considered any of these concepts yet so they are none of them.

Atheism means not believing in a god, so they are literally atheist until told about gods from someone.
You don't need to consider atheism to be one, as long as you don't believe in one, which a newborn don't, you are atheist.

Well exactly. I'm an atheist since birth. I heard about God when I went to the local Catholic school and didn't believe it. At four years of age I was too old to be indoctrinated which tells me a lot.

With respect sir you are wrong, being an atheist or non-atheist is a matter of choice. Unborn and newborn babies can't really decide on this. Newborn babies are non religious in the same way that they are non political. It is true to say that they do not believe in god but saying they are atheists is actually meaningless in the same way as it would be to say your cat is an atheist or your goldfish doesn't believe in god.

I agree on that. I actually made the same point some pages ago, that we might call babies agonistic rather than atheist.

It's semantics though; we all agree that babies are not born with general or specific religious beliefs, which was the core point here. So let's not get too wrapped up in this in the gay footballers thread...

The bolded part is literally the definition of being atheist. You chose to become religious, then you're not atheist anymore.
I see many places online, religious people talk about atheism like it's a religion, it's not, it's lack of.

that we might call babies agonistic rather than atheist.

As far as i know, being agnostic means that you consider the possibility of a god, a newborn won't do that before it's presented with the idea.
Like, there might be a god, but i haven't seen proof enough that there is one yet.

Not being aware of the idea at all, or not believing, is atheism.

I guess this discussion is better in the religion thread, even though religion definitely is relevant in this thread in general.

It is, but the semantic question about whether to call a baby's non-belief atheistic or agnostic isn't very much. :) So I'd suggest we move that specific question elsewhere.

Made the news over here too. Not sure it's a good sign that it's still big enough news that someone comes out as a gay makes an international news story, should really not be a big deal, but I don't think there's a lot of current footballers that are openly gay, so it's a step in the right direction. Hopefully it makes it easier for others to be open about it too.

Isn't he the highest profile one so far by some margin though? In a field like this, with its history, it's always going to make headlines.

Very brave of him to come out, especially considering he plays and lives in a country with a greater percentage of homophobes than some other European nations. He will unquestionably get harassed by a bunch of losers on the stand for coming out.

Yeah, might be. Only one more high profile I can think of was Hitzlsperger, but I think he came out after retiring.

Edit: I get why it makes the news, just think it should've been a lesser taboo in football by now.
Can't imagine it's easier to take the step when it's international news when someone comes out as a gay.
Hopefully the response he gets is all-around positive.

I think it's very important that a current professional comes out. For those who don't dare (for unfortunately obvious reasons), this creates role models who gradually normalise it.

It’s a real shame in 2023 that this is such a big deal/moment because it shouldn’t be. It shouldn’t matter.
That said, well done Jakub. Hopefully other players in his position feel empowered by his bravery to live as themselves without fear of discrimination or abuse.

Good for him.
1/2 of me saying this shouldn't be news (who cares if he's gay?) and 1/2 of me saying it's big news :D

I really really hopes he can take the abuse, and i would guess he has taken that into account before he said something, because if he now get "forced" to quit it would sadly be a major backlash on other gay footballers thinking about coming out.
Sad state of affairs that it is this way, and it would be absolute wonderful if nothing changed in regards to him now, but i am afraid thats not going to happen.

We still have a huge problem with racism, so imagine being the only black footballer. Thats the scenario i am afraid of.

Well done to the guy, he is a brave and glorious man

Hopefully he's the first of many and we can put this in the past. It's quite sad this is still a thing people need to worry about in football. Well done to him.

Let's hope the morons leave him alone so he can enjoy life to the fullest.

thats what I came in to post.

Well done to him now everyone leave him alone to carry on with his life and support him by not senstationalising it.

Fair play to him. In all honesty its no suprise some footballers come out after their carreer is done and not before. The abuse will be massive. Still not sure about CR7 either. But everything aside its the players personal business and it should not affect his playing time. (or the lack of) Funnly enough lesbians seem to be much more accepted inwomens football circles.
If you are good enough you are good enough.
