Champions League Round of 16 (14th Feb - 15th Mar)

Why do commentators talk about second leg comeback wins being the greatest ever European night in that clubs history, when the club has won the thing multiple times?

They did it when United knocked out PSG. It’s like they only started watching football the other day.

@Brwned how important do you think it was that Alaba went off injured early ?

He was fecking terrible

Yeah I thought it was huge! They went from having an obvious vulnerability that constantly put them on the back foot, to a really solid base to build from…honestly it seemed like he was doing them a favour just tapping out.

Or that Barcelona are "much better" than Madrid!

Regardless of who is on top in the league, based on the team we played last Thursday and the one I watched today, I would be much more concerned playing Real

I mean Ten Hag has made Wout feckin Weghorst look a handful in midfield, its possible he might have been moulded into a very good CF for us. We'll never know thanks to the Glazers though.
I just don't see it with Gakpo. Much rather we go for someone more proven.

Surely everyone knows about those great European nights at Anfield though?

The BBC text commentary has just posted this

Liverpool 2-5 Real Madrid

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp last May

Still chucking a quid or 2 on them to win outright, it's the luck they get I may as well get money for having to suffer that fate, although I really hope even the luck they get can't help them here

I like that Madrid gave them two goals start to make it more interesting :wenger:
That's how we do it in Madrid. Spot them 2 goals, beat the brakes off them and look good doing it

Liverpool supporting viewers must have loved BT tonight.

McManaman has been bigging Madrid up all night on commentary (‘this is the competition when the big boys come to town’)

In the studio you have die hard United man Rio.
You also have a guy who loves Liverpool so much he came to play for us.

And a guy who’s defining moment was costing Liverpool a league title

Apparently it's the first time for Pool conceding 4+ goals at home... Dunno whether it counts as one of those famous European nights at Anfield though

Take a lot of these players off the pitch and they seem to become more normal don't they.
He's been away from the sesspit for a few years now. The scouseium isn't effecting him as strongly as normal.

The cracks are still there, mate. Newcastle played 70+ minutes with 10 men against them last week and still should’ve scored at least three. These bastards always game-raise as feck in opening 10-15 minutes at home in Europe. If you weather that storm, you’ve got a chance. As long as Madrid don’t ship a second here early doors, they can get back into this.

I never bought into the narrative that the Scousers had turned a corner after beating their hapless Stockholm Syndrome neighbours and a 10-men Newcastle who never score goals but who genuinely should’ve scored three-plus against them last week.

The warning signs were there all along that this shower are as porous as ever and Madrid absolutely lacerated them in the transition tonight. As much as I enjoyed that display, a part of me is disappointed as I wish it was us who handed them their arse like that. No doubt they’ll batten down the hatches against us on the 5th March and won’t make those schoolboy mistakes again.

Well, I wasn't expecting that second half. Very good game from the whole team. Camavinga looked good and Valverde is back on form.

That's interesting. When players become pundits and we see and hear them close up, they become regular people. Its funny the different dynamics in different studios. Very academic with Lineker and Shearer. Ubearable with Souness, especially without Keano to put manners on him. I like Rio, I have to say.
