Champions League Round of 16 (14th Feb - 15th Mar)

Liverpool supporting viewers must have loved BT tonight.

McManaman has been bigging Madrid up all night on commentary (‘this is the competition when the big boys come to town’)

In the studio you have die hard United man Rio.
You also have a guy who loves Liverpool so much he came to play for us.

And a guy who’s defining moment was costing Liverpool a league title
When the show cut to the studio there was a little vibe, smiles dying off. I bet someone said to Gerrard you have to do the slip.

That's interesting. When players become pundits and we see and hear them close up, they become regular people. Its funny the different dynamics in different studios. Very academic with Lineker and Shearer. Ubearable with Souness, especially without Keano to put manners on him. I like Rio, I have to say.

You find the likes of G Nev, Keane and Carragher have gone from utterly hated by rival fans to quite liked these days.
Sourness though, has a unique gift of being hated by all sides.

That nonsense about alice band wearing Sabitzer trying to "do" that player at the weekend was outrageous.

Loving the result but not beyond the realms of possibility for a Liverpool comeback only to lose in extra time in the second leg. I just like drama with popcorn on the side.

People think of McManaman as automatically some die hard Liverpool guy, forgetting his Everton childhood support, and how he had his most succesful times at Madrid, having stitched Liverpool up for a fee by taking a Bosman!

Nah, they are not going to take a 3-goal lead at the Bernabeu. It is over.

so every EPL club in CL lost bar City, who plays tomorrow.
But we must share our revenue with the other top clubs!
Feels like Europe want the big signings more than keeping competition on the pitch even

Well the first half was fun. Two sides attacking well and defending terribly. Wonder what the odds were on both keepers making howlers like that in the same game? Nunez took his goal well but I thought he was poor. Salah and Gakpo had a good first 45 minutes though. Vinicius is so good.

The second half was men against boys. Ancelotti and Klopp showing the managerial difference between serial winners and occasional ones. It says a lot that Ancelotti can get so much out of his players in their 30's and ours have declined so much. Hard not to admire Madrid and their CL voodoo. It's their competition and they know it.

That was 18% of the goals Liverpool have conceded in the CL at Anfield under Klopp scored tonight. Kind of felt like when Club Brugge play someone decent at home in Europe, go 1-0 up then get absolutely battered. That's it, we're Brugge.

4-0 away win in Madrid coming up...no probably not but it's fun to pretend right?

Gerrard, McManaman, Crouch all looking glum, Hendo miserable interview
This is magnificent.

Bring on Klopp then we can all get some kip

Just ridiculous looking back.

100m man scores a fancy back flick.
Courtois makes an insane mistake.
2-0 and like a couple of years ago - only going one way.

Then that ending!

Crazy game. At HT it was 2-2 and I genuinely thought it could finish 5-3 to Madrid so almost correct  Looked too easy for them going through Liverpool's midfield. I do think there were 1-2 situations when Real were 3-2 up where it could've been penalty to Liverpool (push on Nunez and handball - I couldn't rewatch it though). However, always looked like RM were going to win it. Not over but big, big advantage for them.

Camavinga is obviously good but I really like Valverde as well. Don't watch them usually though so don't know how good they are.

Spurs (4th in PL) lost away 1st leg to 4th place in Serie A, 1-0.

Chelsea (10th?) lost away 1st leg to 2nd place in Bundesliga, 1-0.

Liverpool (8th) destroyed at home 1st leg to 2nd place in La Liga, 2-5.

Only City and Spurs have kept some type of consistency from last year, while Arsenal and United have taken the place of Chelsea and Liverpool. The depth in strength/quality is understated in the PL, thus good teams will lose out and lose form a la Liverpool and Chelsea. But then Chelsea have been a cup team for quite a while.

Only Liverpool have embarssed themselves (always a good thing) and the PL.

xG can feck off. It ruins football discussions
This...honestly wasn't a good game for xG. Very chaotic, most of the chances came off weird situations and mistakes. Does a good job in showing we were both good and lucky and Liverpool were a unlucky, but overall i don't think anyone who saw the game thinks this should have been anything but a Madrid win. Granted, 5-2 is too much

The first 20 mins I thought Madrid weren't bothering showing up tonight, those 2 goals just made them angry.

Well done for showing your face in the thread after FT.

Kim Min Jae had another terrific performance! Should monitor him closely as he still has his buyout clause
