Champions League Round of 16 (14th Feb - 15th Mar)

Well the first half was fun. Two sides attacking well and defending terribly. Wonder what the odds were on both keepers making howlers like that in the same game? Nunez took his goal well but I thought he was poor. Salah and Gakpo had a good first 45 minutes though. Vinicius is so good.

The second half was men against boys. Ancelotti and Klopp showing the managerial difference between serial winners and occasional ones. It says a lot that Ancelotti can get so much out of his players in their 30's and ours have declined so much. Hard not to admire Madrid and their CL voodoo. It's their competition and they know it.

That was 18% of the goals Liverpool have conceded in the CL at Anfield under Klopp scored tonight. Kind of felt like when Club Brugge play someone decent at home in Europe, go 1-0 up then get absolutely battered. That's it, we're Brugge.

4-0 away win in Madrid coming up...no probably not but it's fun to pretend right?

Klopp's inability over the years to refuse to change his tactics blows my mind for such a good manager. Yet again tonight you lot lined up with a suicidal line and pressed Madrid as if you were 2018 Liverpool and got spanked for it. If he wants to run that maniac pressing system he better have the legs for it, which he clearly doesn't. Made no sense and even then you got off to the best possible start jumping on them.

Klopp is one trick pony tactically. He's exceptional at what he does, but he doesn't have way to change to wingback system for example to make better uses of his wing backs (not as good defensively, but still an asset offensively). Or a pseduo 4-4-2. Too rely on pressing, so can't move from 4-3-3.

Benzema in the PL would certainly make the scousers foam at the mouth and shit their pants at the same time

We may not win, but this is our best chance in a long time. Time for some payback for some humiliations at our home.

Yeah could have virtually a full squad to pick from apart from Eriksen which we haven't been able to say for few years

On another note, anyone think Napoli can win it? 2-0 away win in the first leg so they should get through that. I'd fancy them against anyone at the moment.
Think they might well be the best team in the world right now but the CL isn't about being the best over a season, it's about being the better than 1 opponent 7 different times. Experience matters for a lot, the ability to be at your best when it matters...

Ultimately probably won't matter here because eintracht are just overmatched, but tonight was a game they should have won by more than 2 goals and effectively killed the tie

I never bought into the narrative that the Scousers had turned a corner after beating their hapless Stockholm Syndrome neighbours and a 10-men Newcastle who never score goals but who genuinely should’ve scored three-plus against them last week.

The warning signs were there all along that this shower are as porous as ever and Madrid absolutely lacerated them in the transition tonight. As much as I enjoyed that display, a part of me is disappointed as I wish it was us who handed them their arse like that. No doubt they’ll batten down the hatches against us on the 5th March and won’t make those schoolboy mistakes again.

Oh yeah guarantee they turn into prime Barcelona against us,what I would give to boss them like City did in that 4-1 last season

Do you mean the one in 2020/21 when there were no fans at games? Last year both games were 2-2 draws.

Stats nonces putting faith in this xG shite, instead of evaluating what they’re seeing with their own two eyes, never fails to make me chuckle.
It feels like a vindication of all my past posts on the subject

As a Chelsea fan I’m not in any position to laugh at Liverpools poor season but defensively they are woeful. Madrid weren’t particularly great but they let them walk through.

Tbf defense is the one things we've still got left to brag about.

Remarkably we've got the joint 2nd best record in the league.

You can and you should, even if your team is doing poorly, never stop enjoying your opponents' troubles. Otherwise only the winning teams would be enjoying themselves

How do you go from 2:0 up to losing 2:5 at home, mental. Then again given how shite they have been all season and the fact they haven't won against Madrid in 7 games now? not really surprising.

Napoli on the other hand probably through to the last 8, what an incredible season by them. Would be interesting to see if they can keep up this form and get a double.
Liverpool are now 0W 1D 6L against Real Madrid since their 4-0 win at Anfield 14 years ago.

I bet that Liverpool game brought back memories for Karius. The same fixture he made a mistake in and then the 2 keepers last night made mistakes.

Just been watching the highlights. Muani's red card for Frankfurt was super harsh.

Vinicius Junior has developed into a really fantastic footballer to watch, and Modric is still so classy.

He’s right. That entire backline besides Robertson has been crap defensively for a bit now. Allisson finally had a bad game as well when he’s normally the one bailing them out
I don’t understand Carragher saying they need new defenders. So he’s saying they need to replace , Trent. Robertson, Konate and VVD ? Can’t see Klopp replacing any one of them.

What they need is a proper coach. ETH is the prime example. He’s made Shaw, AWB, Dalot and even Linderloff into brilliant players. Carrahger use to say, “you can’t just throw money at it.” How things have turned on its head!

A lot of understandable attention is given to Osimhen/Kvara but Anguissa also deserves a lot of credit. He has turned into a monster of a player
Nah, he's not "turned into", he's been a monster of a player for years

I mean what they need is to stop being sentimental and replace many of the "boys" with newer replacements but Klopp notoriously doesn't do that. Realistically it's not really the defenders fault (besides Gomez and Matip, both of them are crap). Klopp KNOWS Trent is a terrible defender but he still insists on a suicidal high line without the midfielders that have sufficient legs to cover and help tracking back.

It's the same shit he pulled with Dortmund and the reason they were in the relegation zone for half of the season his final year there. You can't preach and play this freakishly intense pressing style for years on end without constantly replacing players or adjusting your style. I actually think Liverpool would be a pretty good team on the counter if they tweaked their setup and sat back more in a deeper formation, but he's either too naive or too arrogant to do so.
