My guess is that we have a pre-takeover budget of £100-150m plus any sale proceeds. If the takeover goes ahead, the budget may be bigger, so the question for ETH is does he assume the former or the latter when selecting his targets. That would explain the Kane situation, that he will spend the pre-takeover budget, and if he gets additional revenue at the end of the window, then he will swoop for Kane (if he hasn't gone to Madrid). I actually think that by the end of the window, Levy will decide to sell, as he doesn't want to miss out on a big pay cheque.

If that was the case I still think we could go for Kane now. We've got so many players to sell - and the likes of Maguire, Henderson, Martial, McTominay, Fred etc could actually bring in a decent amount of money to use for midfield and goalie. The longer the window goes on the more that selling clubs will know we are desperate, and the harder it will be to sign someone. I mean, we literally cannot go into next season with Martial as our only centre -forward - that is more pressing even than midfield or goalkeeper. We could even hang on to Henderson for a year if there wasn't funds for a keeper.

Levy is desperate to sell to Madrid. He gets kane out of the league (not to a perceived rival), and he gets a bucket load of cash. If Kane doesn't want to go to Madrid, or Madrid are not willing to meet levy's demands, he may begrudgingly sell to us. I expect us to go for Hojlund earlier in the window, and if the big takeover happens, we may try to get him with a sneaky £70-80m bid at the end of the window, otherwise we wait till January / next summer (unless he's already gone to madrid).

He's 30 this summer, if he goes there he's probably there for 3 years, as Madrid aren't paying 100m without making it a 5 year deal. Meaning someone has to pay big money to buy him.

So if he came back at 33, he's have to be hitting 15 goals a season for 3-4 years to hit the target. Seems unlikely he'll be a mid 30s sort of guy?

Absolute worst case scenario is we really want him, he goes to Madrid and we end up doing our classic buying of players at the wrong time in 3 years.

People seemed surprisingly sure we'd be able to deal with the never charming Levy.
I wasn't ever sure he was the right fit anyway myself, but are there any better options around 23-25? No idea.

Only if we went to bonkers lengths to get him. I don't think Kane was the main issue. The issues were the fee, Levy, and potentially our current uncertainty due to ownership that may leave them lacking surefootedness in the market.

Unfortunately we had quite a few delusional characters around here that thought chucking a bit of money at Levy would cause panic and that would get him here relatively cheap. Was never, ever happening. Kane was only ever available to us in particular for outrageous money. 100 million or maybe even more.

Strengthen one of our main competitors in Europe, whilst meaning we have to overpay for an inferior player? It’s an absolute disaster for us if he ends up at Real. Slightly better than Newcastle but only just.

Not to mention, it’s a win-win for Levy who gets the money Kane is worth and avoids having to desperately try and sell Kane this summer to a “rival” or lose all credibility when he leaves on a free.

Benzema leaving may have absolutely screwed us here but still hopeful Kane will reject a move abroad.

If he was determined to stay in the Premier and break Shearer's record, and United was his preferred destination, it would be possible. I don't think he can go to Real for 3 or 4 years and come back at 33 or 34 and break the record.

What we need is for Kane to say he's leaving and wants to come to United. That way we low ball Spurs and tell Levey take it or we sign him on a free in January.

You do if you really don't want to spend another summer chasing rainbows. One big feck off take it or leave it offer and if it's turned down then immediately look at other options. You do not want to get into negotiations with Levy - just make him an offer that he can't refuse. Kane is worth it, and god knows we have spunked many millions on absolute drivel over the last decade. I mean, Eric Bailly alone cost over £30 million - how many decent games have we had out of him? About 10 maybe?

I'm sure ETH would love to have Kane and Osimhen signed on 1 July, but if the selling club a) don't want to sell, and b) have placed a huge price tag on your targets, and c) we have a limited budget, you don't get exactly what you want. Realistically, I think we will get one striker in early, and he will see if he can get Kane, and if not, go for somebody else later in the window. I can't see us bidding big money on Kane at the start of the window when we have so many positions to fill.

We've not been anywhere near a competitor to Madrid in Europe for a decade.

Why would he be free in Jan? You can't do pre contracts in the same country, so assume you mean in a year.

Madrid are. Our aim is to be one of the best clubs in the world, as we should be with our revenue and fanbase. This thread just reads like a fanbase who are more than happy to rumble along getting 3rd or 4th in the league, maybe get to the odd QF or so in Europe and accept we are second class citizens to the likes of Madrid or City.

If we are happy to see those clubs buy the best players in the world, then we may as well accept our rivals are the likes of Spurs. We can buy a “promising” striker with re-sale value and sell them to our betters in a couple of years, if they do well.

Dude, you don't need to explain to me the reasons why Levy doesn't want to sell to us, the very slim likelihood of Kane coming to United, and the fact that ETH would love to have Kane and Osimhen signed on 1st July. I understand all of that. What I am saying is that I'm certain that ETH would rather secure Kane (as unlikely as that might be) as early as possible, and if that's definitely not happening then draw a line under it and go for someone else. The last thing in the world we need is to be trying to do transfer business whilst withholding a cheeky £100 million (which is probably the vast majority of our entire budget) just in case Levy somehow has a change of heart late in the summer. Chasing FDJ all summer last year is, I'm sure, not something that we would want to repeat this year.

Yeah he has to say it's only Utd he wants,however with Madrid in the picture can't see that happening at all. Would love him to prove me wrong

I remember that being the case in the reports after the season ended but that would probably prove irrelevant given Levy's stubborn stance.

I thought a player out of contact in the summer could negotiate with however they wanted in January ? You can't get them til the summer, but can't you negotiate with them in January?
