I've often wondered this too. The only thing I can think of is there's a verbal agreement between clubs to not to this to each other.

Even if Kane was up for it, I think the purchasing club wouldn't go for it. Because nobody wants it done to them.

If it became ubiquitous in the PL it would essentially hand players a lot more power over clubs.
 
We need to do whatever it takes to get Kane, the only player in the world right now who I think will instantly propel us to greater heights.

Getting Levy to sell is fully on Kane saying I don't care if you refuse to sell to Utd I will just go on strike to push for the move

I think he/she mean Kane would do that himself and become a free transfer?

Kane has only one year left. His salary is reportedly 10.4m a year. And according to that poster he'd have to pay Spurs only a part of that. Surely as a free transfer the massive signing bonus would largely cover that imo. And it's not like no club would sign Kane if he does that I think. After what Levy did to him nobody would say anything or blame Kane for doing such imo.

yeah I know what they meant

he’ll be a free transfer but still needs a new club, and he’s not going to do that without knowing his chosen club is willing to do the deal ( front the money ) to buy out the contract.

I mean, Kane could make a lot of money doing that. Maybe he doesn’t want to disrespect Spurs. But plenty of other players have been in this situation and not had a great relationship with their clubs, but it still rarely happens.

So the question remains, why not?

I read long back (like years ago) that clubs don't sign players who does this, there is sort of unwritten rule.

Once you start this, there is no holding back. Every club will do it and it will create a huge mess.

Yeah I'm really curious why not too.

Maybe as you said the clubs have a gentleman agreement not to do this. But even if so imo it's definitely should not be applied to Levy. That cnut simply has nothing to do with the word 'gentleman'.

Doesn't seem like a good idea to me. If we sign another striker, we could wait for Kane but that will mean that we have to keep Martial until that transfer supposedly happens. That is unless EtH views Rashford as a striker. We could very well end up with Rashford / Højlund instead of Kane / Højlund.
 
Feck waiting till the end of the window. Hope the club make tell Ten Hag that’s not acceptable.
 
It wouldn't be a transfer window without a long drawn out saga where the player ultimately fails to sign...

They finished ahead of us twice in the last 5 seasons and five times in total since Fergie's retirement. We might not be traditional rivals but Spurs are a direct competitor in the league.

You might be optimistic and say that with Ten Hag we are guaranteed to go up another level or that Spurs are now going to languish in the wilderness due to mismanagement but the last decade doesn't suggest we're levels above them.

We're not anywhere near the same league as Madrid at the moment so it's not like strengthening them means we're going to miss out on anything, we're missing out to teams much closer to home at the moment and we need to close that gap first.

It's not a disaster, and people need to get wise to the situation. Kane wouldn't be anything more than a short term fix for us, we're not in a position to sign a RVP and win the league, we need 4 players at least to start competing. The problem with that is we don't have £500m to spend to get 4 players of Kane's ability who can challenge today so by the time we do have a squad that's ready to challenge we'll be at the point where we have to replace Kane, Casemiro, Varane and whichever 30+ players we signed in the last 2 years.

We need to sign the players that will grow into great players in a couple of seasons and then when we have a squad like that we can go out and pick up a Kane to complete the puzzle. The reason we're in the mess we're in is because of this short term success is needed today approach. We're at the point now where we have to replace Ronaldo, Maguire, Eriksen and they were replacements for other short term appointments.

Which he can't do because he's getting towards the end of his peak years, and it'll harm what he can get on the open market if he doesn't play this year.

I'd think that such a scenario would be damaging to Spurs in the eyes on other players considering a move there in the near future, but I think that's probably a little naive.

The only way both Kane and Spurs can come out well in this is for a sale to be agreed if that is what Kane actually wants, if he's happy to play there this year it's not really a problem for either side.

Whilst Kane is obviously prolific, he played out of his skin this season gone and what did that do for Spurs? Languishing in the league, out of Europe. Seems to me they need to get the money in to start rebuilding key areas of the team for Postecoglu. But as it is right now, even if you put aside the strife caused by Conte et al, does anyone really think this team will be competing for Champions League spots next year with City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Newcastle, United all ahead of them at present and looking to strengthen? Then you've got Brighton (who, admittedly, may be weakened by the loss of Mac Allister and potentially Caicedo) and also Villa on the rise under Dracula. I suppose they have even less chance without Kane, but it seems a longshot regardless?

All that said I'm sure someone will come along shortly and correct me on everything I've just said.

Would be funny if we could setup a transfer to another club to fool Levy. He moves to say Inter then we pay them 10m more after they claim unforeseen financial problems. Kane runs out at OT this season and boils Levy's piss.

Pretty sure Spurs actually did something like this to us a few years back, with one of our promising youngsters who turned out to be shit (like most of them tbh). Can't remember the kids name now?

It feels like the transfer system is just out of control and not good for the game at all. Look at a team like Brighton, yes they were well run and did well to make it to the Pl, but once they got there the financial rewards they got were only possible because of the success of the big teams in the league previously.

Now they have enough money to cherry pick the best young talents from Asia and South America who are in need of exposure and game time in a big league and then sell them on for extortionate prices to other teams around the league and Europe. What I'm wondering is why they should benefit so much by signing a player like Caiceido and then getting 20x the amount they paid for him a couple of years later despite the fact they haven't been paying him the kind of money his transfer fee would dictate he's actually worth. Ideally there would be a system where the wage a club pays a player and how long they have left on their contract dictates what transfer fee the selling club can ask for.

His previous club was the one who really developed him and made him the player he is, yet they barely profit from it at all. I know the world is a broken place, but sport doesn't have to be. Who does all of this money even benefit? Feels like it's mainly just players and agents, because the money is rarely passed on to the fans when it comes to match tickets and better facilities.
 
We should probably go in straight away for Hojlund. I just dont see Spurs selling Kane to us.

No, because De Jong was at his dream club, one of only 2 worldwide that arguably have the same status as United. And would have been taking a huge risk joining a United that were at step 1 of their recovery last summer.

He also didn't have a mere 1 year left.

Nothing about Kane's scenario mirrors that.

Kane either leaves this summer for ~€100m or on a free. I don’t think we’re going to be able to get him though unfortunately.

Just about all Levy has left is this reputation of been a tough negotiator, so maybe we're trying to approach this one a bit differently.

I mean there's been not a single positive development on Kane pursuit from any journalist from Tier 5 to Tier 1 for weeks, I think at this point it seems a little obvious that we're trying to approach but Levy is having none of it and are we really willing to drag out another potential transfer for the whole summer for a signing we may not even make - whilst missing out on other targets all other clubs may sign ala FDJ

No-one in their right mind would say Tottenham is, or ever has been such a thing.

Honestly think we want to secure Hojlund anyway,clearly we aren't getting joy with this so either going big for Kolo-Muani too or more realistically looking for cheap experienced stop gap to supplement
