That’s seemingly exactly what happened. The promise to be allowed to leave means nothing though if it wasn’t included in the new contract, as Kane found out last summer.
Exactly. I don't track transfer rumours closely but seems to me we were chasing Rabiot on a free and in that regard I think getting Mount for 60m would still be a good deal. But now that Rabiot is off I certainly see why we would turn our attention elsewhere because Mount alone doesn't solve our major issues really (issues like we are Casemiro injury/suspenion away from playing Fred/Bruno as DM, unless we decide we can't sell McTominay now). Caicedo alone solves issues we have, that's why I'd assume we'd be willing to pay more for him. That's all speculation because we might as well have 60m to spend, who knows.

Top 4 player and CL winner are great achievements, but team achievements. It doesnt necessarily hold that much value on individual level, see Mendy, Alonso, Chilwell and Jorginho hold those same titles. There is no club in the world that would buy Mount for such value or higher, we are the only club stupid enough.
Liverpool would have had him for £55M as would have Bayern.

Quick google says Brigthon sold Mac Allister for 35-45m£ that could rise to 55m£. Something doesn't compute here. Mac Allister had extended his contract to '25. He cost Brigton around 7m£ and just won the world cup.
Caicedo supposedly cost Brighton 5m£ two years ago. There's not a chance in hell he'll be sold for 100m£.

So was DDG our POTY for a few years where we reached Top 4 or won some trophies, but never good enough for the best clubs in the world.
Nothing can take away from Chelsea winning the CL but I'd never consider them the European elite (top 5 clubs) in that period of time. Just as Inter wouldn't be if they beat City (which they really should have).
Not saying he is shite, but he is no world class and don't think he'll ever be. Will be looking to upgrade on him pretty soon and likely be stuck with a player on a huge salary, once again.

Honestly I think you’re wrong (other than the 1 year contract point).
There’s so much hype around unproven players that the fee gets stupid, because people don’t really know what his ceiling is. Yeah he looks quality at Brighton and could just go from strength to strength and become one of the greats in that position, but he could just as easily be exposed as bang average at a top team. We’ve seen it so many times.
Yet players like Mount who have been at a top team for a few years aren’t as glamorous as people know his ceiling I.e. it’s clear he won’t be a world beating player. Yet there’s so much more value for me in a player actually being proven at a big club. And he has been a good player for them, even this season one of the better ones.
Not talking about current de Gea, but de Gea under LvG and Mourinho.
I am not disputing that he had good games vs Real Madrid and City, or had a very good campaign in the CL. But it's not his standard level either. Even if ten Hag could make him top quality, we are going to ask something of him he's never done before. And spend a large sum of our budget for him on that as well.
Mac Allister contract was running out this Summer before his Extension so there is possibility he insisted on reasonable exit Clause for renewal while getting decent wage increase as well and Brighton had to oblige or risk losing him on free.
While Caicedo it seem was on relatively low wages and long contract before Arsenal approach in January and Brighton furthered strengthened their hand by offering Wage increase to Caicedo and adding couple of years on his contract , So long Story Short Brighton would demand a fortune to sell Caicedo might not get as high as £100 m but it would be there or there about if he goes . My guess he stays another year at Brighton .
Tbf, DDG was good enough for the top clubs at one stage, hence why he was a dodgy fax machine away from joining Real Madrid.

If people say Mount is average, that is probably unfair. He has had good seasons, in a completely different role than he'd have here though. The sum is still very large for a player of his contract status and ability, where we are seemingly on a tight budget.
It is clear that EtH wants him, and has an idea of how he wants to fit him in the team. But I think that a proper DoF might have blocked this move. It isn't really sustainable planning to spend such a sum on a player that is a very specific fit. A few too many of these moves and it doesn't work, you are left with another unbalanced squad that a potential next manager will struggle to balance again.
I liken this signing a bit to Fred / Pogba anyway. Players with specific qualities that we are trying to shoehorn into a midfield, for huge sums and will be difficult to move on for their salaries.

Even though I don’t think we’re going to get him, if we do I can see ETH potentially using Caicedo as a RB as his starting position while deploying the popular 3223 formation where in posession Caicedo comes inside to join Casemiro.

Real Madrid have been incredibly lucky that backfired because Navas and Courtouis were/are far better goalkeepers than DDG is.
DDG was an extra-ordinary shot stopper in that period of time, amongst the best I've ever seen. But he was nowhere near elite in most of the other facets of goalkeeping and as we had a poor defence, his shot-stopping was very much highlighted.
It is only a few years later where goalkeeping is measured by more metrics, it becomes painfully clear that he is nowhere near the required standard for that level. And his shot-stopping dropped to the average for some weird reason.
So as I and many have thought, we won’t sign him because we cannot afford him. A ridiculous Antony type fee sounds like it would not be enough.
I am not being hyperbolic when I say Caicedo offers next to nothing in an offensive capacity. The guy's expected seasonal goal involvement was on par with Fred's, and his actual seasonal goal involvement was less than Fred's.
70-90% of his progressive passes were down the left hand channel where the winger is expected to do all the offensive leg work.
He is not a bad player, but as long as we have Casemiro there is no need for him, unless it is as a rotational alternative.

100mil for one single good season is not a bargain either - especially in a team with multiple good players in the system so he isn’t shining out like the odd one out either.
Mitoma, Mac Allister, Sanchez, Ferguson, Caceido & Encinso has had hype during the season - including players like Cucurella, Bissouma & Trossard.
What I mean is, if that valuation is higher than what Chelsea are prepared to pay, then he stays. I don't know if Chelsea will pay 100M for him, and Arsenal certainly won't after signing Rice. Brighton can price him out of a move and then turn around and tell him 'I know we promised you could leave in the summer but no club were prepared to meet the valuation.'
I very much doubt we're buying both Mount and Caicedo. And, as the Mount talk seems a lot more confirmed and advanced, then I'm not 'buying' the Caicedo links.
In a summer when we have to buy a new GK and #9, and there's FFP issues and prolonged takeover deals, then I very much doubt we're going to spend £150m + on the midfield.

I mean, not all metrics are equal and in terms of goalkeeping, he was so elite in the most important one that he would have been absolutely fine at Real (just like he was excellent for several seasons at Utd). It's weird how he's being completely re-written (and this is coming from someone who hopes he moves on this summer).
If it is £100m, you would have to walk away. You can see what happened with Cucurella after one season.
the difference is we are second here. I don't know the balance sheet of Brighton but if there are any gaps in their budget they get cover with Mac Allister money. Simply Britghton may not need our money.
They are actually much worse than Fred's, both expected and actual numbers.
For some reason, he's seen as a deep lying playmaker who dictates the tempo of the game. He is not even close. Even Bissouma had better passing stats than Caicedo last season, and no one would call him a tempo setter.
He is a CDM - a defensive monster - and should be played as such. We already have Casemiro, but he'd be perfect to replace him. Next to him, it's completely pointless.
