I think if you put any young talented European managers in the England job a lot of them would do as Erik did and sideline him asap.
There are no perfect options, obviously no Rio or Terry. But between Stones, Tomori, Guehi, Coady, full backs who can play as CBs in a 3 or even 2 like Shaw and Walker, better managers than Southgate would find better systems.

it is debatable but Southgate did come out and say publicly at this latest international break that he could not continue to select Maguire if he has another season with so little playing time. If he said the same in private and made clear that he meant it that could help to persuade Harry to go. Personally I think he would be ideal as the next West Ham Captain once they sell Rice.
I'm sure a club like West Ham under Moyes would be right for him, but he'd surely be better off staying well clear of the captain's armband wherever he goes - if for no other reason than having a break from the additional attention and scrutiny. I doubt Ole would make that mistake twice given the chance, it was no doubt supposed to push him into being the leader of the team, but it backfired and has made things harder for everyone since.

Big issue though, as usual, will be the salary…..a loan is of no use to us if we have to supplement wages - we need him off the books.

The biggest issue remains expectation verus reality.
Maguire won't take what he would consider a step down but there is zero interest in him from top 6 clubs that want to play progressive football. He would do a decent job at a relegation struggler where his role would be to get his slab on anything into the box and he could stay deep with everything in front of him but those clubs could not afford a decent fee or anything close to his current wage and he would likely think such a move beneath him. He might be fine in Serie A where the generally slower pace and amount of time allowed on the ball for defenders would not stress his limited spatial awareness but again none of the clubs there can afford him even if he was inclined to go.
This season is his breakout season, I can feel it. You should keep him around.
I remember his debut against Chelsea was actually quite impressive.

This season is Nicolas Pepe's breakout season. I know he's yet to have a decent season like Maguire has when he first joined United, but give Pepe a few months on the wing and he'll begin to pay back that 72m transfer fee.

I'm not sure you want to play this game.
Maguire can be moved out easier than the rest. A conversation with Maguire saying, he is 5th choice behind Luke Shaw going into the season, the club are open to selling.
The likes of Villa, West Ham can afford a £30/40m fee now we have seen West Ham get Declan money. If he choses to stay he knows he wont get game time and his England future is in the question. Then its up to him.
Martial, just have to find anyone that will offer more than £5m and sell him. His wages are an issue so maybe Saudi?
Why not? Over the years both of our clubs have struggled to shift deadwood players on high wages. Let's not pretend that United are miles worse than Arsenal when it comes to expensive mistakes.
Yeah that was a real issue for us over the years. Thankfully we've moved almost all of the dead wood on - especially the players who were on crazy wages. Now it's only Pepe and Soares left.
United are about two years behind in this endeavour IMO.

A fair question. Making it known publicly that the club will listen to offers and when offers come in — even if as low as 5m — respond with a sensible counter.
In the case of Maguire, a reasonable landing spot for a transfer fee would be 25m. We might even be able to get between 30-40m in todays market. For Martial, a free transfer.
You might ask about their wages. If neither are willing to budge on their wages and would rather sit on the bench until their contracts run out, then there’s nothing anyone can do about that. But to help them and their agents focus their thinking, they need to be made aware of the consequences of sitting on their contracts.

He didn't get many last season either, would you take a pay cut, in say the range of 50% to move somewhere else? I know I wouldn't and nor would 99.9% of the CAF
I think he can have a future in Italy as there may be less space for him to cover and a new fresh air should be good for him.

Right, so you are just plucking figures from thin air? Who said he would need a 50% pay cut?
Common sense tells you he would need to - he's on 10 million a year and the kind of club he could go to can't afford those kind of wages, at best he'd get around half that, the exception being Saudi

Honestly, they would both be good signings for West Ham. Maguire definitely, for a Moyes team.
I don't see him leaving. We can't really buy a replacement even if we sell him as we have other priorities, so he'll still be stinking up the club next season along with Martial, Fred and probably McTom too.

You know he'll still be here next season talking about how he hasn't lost any games he's played in - the games being preseason and Carabao Cup 3rd round. The guy has no ambition.

Martial and Fred have 1 year left on their contracts so if they don't get a tempting offer I fully expect them to hang around. No one is stupid enough to give a footballer who can only run around for 25 mins once a month a contract so Martial is staying.

Yes 25% is still a pay cut but its not the end of the world if you want to play football. It depends what he wants.
If I was him and have self belief, which he clearly does from all his interviews "There is a reason all managers play me"... "I was in team of tournament", he can clearly back himself playing in the Europa League with West Ham.
Its up to him to decide, whats for sure is he will get less minutes than last season as Lindelof overtook him as 2nd choice as RCB.
I think that last point is something to keep an eye on, I've got a sneaky feeling our big blow out last summer was partly in the knowledge that a large wedge was coming this summer.
I think Maguire would fit into a West Ham side quite well, away from the limelight that he is currently in which may mean every mistake is not hyperfocused like it is now. Moyes also managed to take Dawson, an at best relegation yo-yo standard player and made him into a Europa League team of the season level player. I'm sure Maguire can manage similar levels with the right management. It'd all depend on price though.
However I think for now there are far larger pressing issues the club need to sort out, and I'd imagine almost all the Rice money that is made available will go into strengthening our midfield (probably 2 players in that area), an upgrade on our left (probably Barnes) and maybe another striker. Won't be very much left in the pot for a defender the price of Maguire if your expecting 30 million.
