For some reason people always blame the player for the transfer fee. But then also blame the player if they prefer to sit out their contracts. The transfer fee hate alone would be plenty reason to aim for free transfers. That's the only control a player really has on how much a club spends on buying out your contract at another club, unless you have an agent who knows how to fight for your contract rights and a lower release clause, but then you'll also get hate for falling in the hands of a fiendish agent.
In comparison, club chairpeople got it pretty good, because they can always hide behind 'no one is bigger than the club' while they actually can influence much more of what players are cursed at over. They can even get a manager to exile a player for treating the contract the way it was agreed on.

Actual skills and qualities aside, when he steps in the pitch our defense just gets nervous. I don't know if that is a temporary thing but this is how it is. He isn't that bad, but he really doesn't inspire confidence as a squad CB.
Id rather it be one of the youth team than Maguire. I get why Bale done it at Madrid, he loved the weather and had already completed football so it didnt leave much else left for him to accomplish. Maguire has won the league cup and believes staying even as a bit part player is enough for him to pad his medal haul. United will be winning more trophies now with a better team and as a squad player it seems this is why he wants to be a part of it.
Southgate still picks him as a starter every game which bemuses me no end, hes not a regular for United why is he for England? Happened with previous players trying to get into the England squad, excuse was they didn't play regularly enough to deserve to be called up, never mind picked to start each game.
He has been defended by a large section of our support a lot more than other players tbf. It became almost cult like to defend his performances.
He is a terrible footballer, nowhere near the level of a top 4 side and even if we had got him on a free I would have found it just as frustrating that he has played as much as he has.

What? No he didn't. In fact, there was comparisons between VVD and Maguire in his first season at United, he improved us massively when we were playing counter attacking football, he was that good, we were all wishing he'd be rushed back from injury for the EL final (which we lost) because we were worried about our defence and didn't fancy our chances without him. Maguire's first season at United made the fee look justified.
It's only since we changed to a more progressive style of play that Maguire's limitations have been highlighted, and man, there's a big list of limitations. The reason he gets hate is because whenever he's on the pitch he incites panic in his own team and 9 times out of 10 he makes a mistake that usually costs us.
He's comfortably our 5th choice CB at this point, and that's behind Shaw playing CB also. There's no place for him in this team unfortunately for him.
He's not being punished for nothing, he's facing the consequences of not being good enough for our first team, and refusing to leave for first team football elsewhere. That's the nature of football.
The club's obligation is to pay him his agreed wages which they are doing, and presumably to provide him some sort of training facilities. We have no obligation to let him play with the first team just because he'll be upset if they don't.
I am surprised club like West Ham, Aston Villa, Everton and Wolves didn't show any interest. Maguire style suit their game. He is England's No.1 CB. Surely, some club in England will be interested?
son, this is history revisionism right here. When it comes to distribution, Maguire was always our weakest link, and he is the one who made it worse for the rest.
Yes, DDG's limited ability didn't help, McT's hiding didn't help, but god damn, the x factor was always Maguire's composure.

I never once mentioned he has to play... Find me a time a player has been dropped from the first team squad (which means more than matches... Training, eating, etc..) for anything outside of a punishable offence.
He has a right to train, eat and mingle with the first team as that is what he is contractually signed to.

Next year will be Euro. Southgate won't play someone who is not regular starter at their club. He needs all the player match fit and in-form to do well in Euro.

If you're a club looking to buy Maguire, I think it's sensible to wait before putting in an offer. And I think that is what will end up happening. He's reported to be on £190k a week, which isn't as bad as some of the other contracts negotiatiated by Matt Judge who was the head of contract/transfer negotiations until the end of the summer transfer window in 2023.

Italy is a good shout. Even Smalling is doing very well there. Serie A is less intense and the speed is generally slower. I think Maguire can be a top CB in Serie A.
He will look like a world class player for Inter. Skriniar and D'Ambrosini are gone. They need bodies in their defense.

I don’t think the £10m rumour was us paying him off and releasing him on a free. There’s no chance that’d happen. I reckon it was the estimated difference between what another club might be willing to pay him and what he is currently on (over the remainder of his contract). Unless he agrees to disregard the difference or puts in a formal request to leave, I think he’s technically able to drag his heels and be paid it by us. Same applies for any player.

My biggest problem with Maguire is not that hes Average/ limited. My biggest problem with him is that he is delusional about his quality.
That doesn't mean he is the better player but he should be fine in Serie A and in a lot of PL sides too.
I'm praying that this will happen. Get rid of Maguire and get Onana in. This is perfect for the team style of play next season.
