Maguire | he stays!

Southgate defaults to him regardless for England so that probably factors into him staying. Doesn’t matter that Tomori wins Serie A with AC Milan, it’s Slabhead all the way under Southgate.

He’s helped take him all the way to a penalty shootout away from winning a top international competition, scoring in that shootout and playing exactly the kind of conservative football Southgate likes, so it’s hardly surprising.

I think we'll end up loaning him out with an option to buy. Someone will stump up a third of his wages and give us a couple million with an option to buy for something like £15million. No-one is paying a significant fee with these wages.

We do need to move this forward though, publicly inform of a new captain and bring in a new CB would be a starter.

Yeah, though i guess the new CB was only ever likely if we were able to move Maguire on due to FFP.

Im hoping one of the Saudi club offer us 50M. And a salary Maguire can't refuse, 400K p/w tax free. :D problem solved

I don't think Maguire would take it though as he'd lose his England place by playing over there.

I think the most likely scenario this summer is that he goes out on loan somewhere.

Has a single club been linked with him this summer?
I don’t even remember a journalist even trying to conjure up a fake story. It’s dead silent.

He’s nowhere near as bad as is being made out, but his lack of mobility makes it difficult to use him in a high press. Obama will definitely help with that though. There’s no point in loaning him out if we can’t afford a better replacement and have to still pay a large chunk of his wages. I’m so disappointed we didn’t get Kim through the door though

He is quite the leader, but I think this is asking too much.

I commend the effort, but Maguire is 30 years old.

The deficiencies in his game, both at reading and positioning, as well as physical (slow - and despite being big not really imposing) aren't going to disappear at this stage of his career.

Brother, please try to engineer a move away, please.

Wonder if our fans constantly making fun of him & turning him to a Meme has reduced interest & potential fees for us. He had a good season for us & been good for England, dont think he is bad not to play for Pl teams under the top 8.

he had a good season for us?!?

he hardly played (best part)

and when he did our defence’s confidence was instantly shattered and then he scored an own goal. He’s also the most unlikable Utd ‘captain’ in history with his terrible interviews (when he’s not too timid to do them) and his annoying hairflicks.

I have to say I struggle to see why anyone gives a flying feck who our 3rd choice RCB and 4th choice LCB is outside of the bizarre meme culture we now live in. Unless there is some top CB talent him staying is stopping us from signing (Disasi doesn’t seem to be that…) then who cares?

I mean fair play but the things he lacks currently cannot really be trained.

He would've been good even for Utd under a guy like Jose but don't see how he can pull it off under Ten Hag.

Funny isn't it he is ostensibly putting in some real effort when the captaincy is (allegedly) stripped and he gets dropped from the team.

Because A) He doesn’t suit the football ETH wants to play B) He’s one of our few sellable assets who could fetch decent money C) He’s on a big contact which is a complete waste of money for a 3rd/4th choice centre back D) He’s still the club captain.

Look I admire his commitment and desire to stay and fight, buy it really is a fight he’s never going to win. He’s a 30 year old who’s only going to get slower and less suited to a high line. We’re not talking about some young player who just needs to iron out a few edges in his game. He’s never going to be a player that suits modern top level football. It would just be best for all parties if he moved on.

would rather start Carvalho
Was going to say the same.
How old is Carvalho these days? 40 something? If he has been training for the past few weeks he’s still better footballer than Maguire ever will be.

I'm sure Ten Hag has been very straightforward with Maguire. And even though his displays during the season seems to indicate otherwise, i'm sure Maguire isn't an idiot. He has to improve to be in contention for a place on the bench - or a return to Sheffield United. However, the people negotiating contracts at United has made it difficult for him to leave.

I want him gone but if i was him id also think my performances could improve after a new GK to De Gea.

 at people who get upset that a professional players works hard during off season to be in top shape

I can't fathom why anybody would see the fact that Maguire is (seemingly) training hard during off-season to be a bad thing...
