Film Greta Gerwig's BARBIE (Margot Robbie/Ryan Gosling)

The biggest surprise about this film is that it was not produced by Sony.

Hot pink is my favorite colour, sue me.

I watched animated Barbie movies with my daughter when she was small. I made her believe I enjoyed them.

Out of curiosity, what's that based on? I feel like I'm missing something here. I dutifully watched Lady Bird after reading a glowing review and it was all a bit meh. Which is quite something when you've an actor as incredible as Saoirse Ronan in he lead role. This put me off watching Little Women. Should I have sucked it up and given that a go? Is there some other Greta Gerwig masterpiece I've missed?

I enjoyed Little Women, but I actually preferred Lady Bird, adored it to bits so maybe you shouldn’t  By chance I did watch the two films with the same person, and she did prefer Little Women, but then she also really enjoyed Lady Bird so that’s not much help. They’re different enough though that if you like Little Women the story or that kind of genre then give my girl Greta another go

Some definite old man yells at cloud vibes being given off by some in here.

I can't tell you the amount of times he's DM'd me to talk about his favourite Taiwanese new wave era movies and ended with 'but it still wasn't as good as Black Widow'.
I did find the Guardian review a little off putting, specifically the part about the self awareness being a driver of a lot of the comedy, as that tends to grate on me. But I reckon I’m still likely to go watch this in cinema, albeit after Oppenheimer
In a better world Nolan would have been given the Barbie gig and Gerwig would have directed Oppenheimer.

Robert Oppenheimer after pressing the big red button looks straight into the camera and says “lol did I just do that!”. Black and white close up of Oppenheimer in tears - “I am become death, the destroyer of worlds but er…I still have imposter syndrome(Crying tears emoji)”.

Ah, ok, cool. Sounds like she just isn’t my cup of tea. Lady Bird was one of those movies that I could see was a good movie but just didn’t work for me, despite its obvious merits. As per my reply to @Rooney in Paris higher up.

People not liking movie about doll toys is supposed to be old man yelling at clouds?

Are you sure it's not actually the opposite, modern crowd liking everything because of recency bias, for me it's quite obviously the fanboyism of Greta Gerwig that actually hypes the movie to begin with, and not the other way around.

If Greta Gerwig made great two or three dramas, it doesn't mean everyone should be into a new kids movie that has nothing to do with her previous films. If my favourite writer of action movies/drama/comedy wrote a new movie that is a horror movie, I wouldn't watch it simply because I am not fan of horror movies.

I can't believe I am agreeing with everything @Pogue Mahone wrote.

Without being a fan of Gerwig I’m not surprised you’re not exactly buzzing for this film. It is a bit grim when such random things spawn films, remember fecking Battleship?

But my G double G is gonna make it three for three for me

Hahah
There would have been a shit ton of comedic potential in another director taking on Oppenheimer. I think if I had to make a quick decision as to who I’d have direct it’d be Michael Bay, with permission to depict Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the subtle and sensitive Bay manner

Well Citizen Kane is a movie about a child’s sled. Make of that whatever you will.

Yeah because it’s the modernity of the Barbie franchise (and the whole concept of movies about kids toys) that is so novel and challenging to an old man like me.

Apologies, should have said it had a connoisseurs of the visual artforms vibe.
Whether or not you're correct in the movie being about a child's toy, it doesn't dictate whether or not it's actually going to be any good.

I mean considering the names attached, it's not going to be a film about "doll toys".

Well Citizen Kane is a movie about a child’s sled. Make of that whatever you will.

While there’s an argument that the likes of G.I. Joe: Retaliation and Transformers: Age of Extinction have long since surpassed the likes of Citizen Kane artistically, when Citizen Kane came out there wasn’t a line of Roseblud sleds that had been on the shelves for years beforehand, and the purpose of CK being a vehicle to aid in selling said sleds. This is as someone looking forward to Barbie and thinks it’ll both be good and has a lot of talent associated with it. But there is a difference between making a film about a kid’s toy and a film to sell a kid’s toy.

You hurt my brain

Fence sitting?!

I haven't read through your posts in fairness. Just assumed you were doing your usual thing of giving the film its merits while not instantly shitting on it for being a mainstream movie like the rest of us nerds.

Sorry if wrong x

People deciding beforehand not to like a movie they're probably not even going to watch (and also finding some kind of weird pleasure in telling others they are ridiculous for not hating the movie in advance) kind of is.

It’s a movie about a brand. Same as that fecking ridiculous movie about Nike trainers. Or the one about fecking Cheetos. Let’s call a spade a spade here. Now movies about brands can sometimes be good. The Lego movie the one and only example I can think of. But that was mainly because the whole stop motion Lego animation stuff was so cool. And the Lego movies rinsed the hell out of self referential kids toys gags. Which makes this Barbie movie seem even less interesting.

I really don't understand what you mean (no harm meant and no offence taken or anything, but I really don't understand )

So erm... yeah.

Well, it's getting pretty great reviews. Although it is hard to tell sometimes if some critics are reviewing the film, or are they getting caught up in the discourse surrounding the film, and are then overcompensating by throwing out 5-star reviews and calling it "one of the most inventive movies in recent memory"

Or maybe it's genuinely great. I'm definitely going to give it a watch. I really can't see it being a terrible movie with the people involved. They know what's up. I'm sure they're going to have fun with it. I'm a fan of Greta Gerwig, and both Margot Robbie and Gosling are normally great.

Mistress America is probably Gerwigs best movie. Didn't direct it, but co-wrote and starred in it.

What has anything I wrote there got to do with shouting at clouds?! I shout at clouds a lot. I know what shouting at clouds is.
Frankly it's a little bit weird that you're so intent on convincing the world that a movie you're not even going to watch, and which has gotten great reviews by people who know way more about films that you, is undoubtedly going to be terrible. Just ... don't watch it.

Doing the Oppenheimer/Barbie double bill next Saturday, can't wait.

The worst thing about this thread triggering my pig-headedness today is that I may end up having to watch the poxy thing, to have an informed opinion in case I get sucked into this argument again. So feck you redcafe. And not for the first time. Stupid fecking website.

I definitely think you should give Little Women a go. It's totally quite different from Lady Bird, so it's not a given that because the latter annoyed you, the former will too.

What if You end up liking it wouldn't that be something .
