Maguire | he stays!

He is entitled to it if he stays. If he's happy sitting on the bench and getting paid that money, go for it. You can't change club for the benefit of your England/Club career and demand they pay you what was agreed under totally different circumstances. He shouldn't be happy, but he has to weigh it up against actually playing football. You can't have both.
Except there has never been a suggestion that he'd be moving clubs because he wants to. It's because the club wants to move him on so they can sign another centre back. All the noises out of his side have always been that he wants to stay and fight for his place.

He will leave I am still confident of that give it another week or so He won't be here .

Well he can just say I'm not going to WH or anywhere else and stay and fight for his place and collect his 190k every week on the bench.

If he wants to play most weeks then he excepts the pauper salary of 100k a week. But not sure how he would manage to live on 100k a week with the cost of living in London.

Poor Harry, hard life.

The poster is correct. He's entitled to the money so the club should fulfill their obligations.

Ok he's not going to be destitute if he leaves but that isn't the point. He's entitled to the money

He's obviously still going to leave.

It's either £23m for the sale (£30m - £7m). Or it's nothing for keeping him.

People were talking about accepting £20m earlier in the window. £23m will be the final figure. It'll be fine. That's still more or less break-even on his amortised value. Maguire's agent is simply playing the game.

Where is the "it's not your money anyway" brigade? Will blame anyone who criticizes the absolute stupid spending by the club, but will moan when players will want their contractual obligations fulfilled. Same thing will happen with lots of the overpaid "stars" we have on the payroll.

Deal isn’t off until West Ham buy an alternative. Having said that, Maguire is such a strange character study; it takes some serious stones to stand your ground and line yourself up for what will be almost universal hatred, at the same time, when actually playing, looking like a terrified, nervous wreck. What kind of paradox is he presenting? If you have the nerve to go up against a club and fanbase, how can you be so scared when on a pitch?

It somehow just seems thickheaded. I'm not sure he really thinks that far. He just sees the money-bag in front of him and don't think much more about it, until a new problem (hate from the fanbase and no place for England presents itself).

Never on the front-foot, not in real life neither it seems.

Maybe Nice could come for him to replace one of their departures? Sir Jim to bail us out?

Also, if West Ham really wanted to get him they would have paid him what he wanted. Imagine going to a club who only wants to pay you half your current salary.

Of course West Ham does the right thing here, don’t get me wrong, but whatever Harry does exect staying in United will put him in the losing corner.

But to be fair, he doesn’t care about playing or not, he did that for 12 years. Now he’s earning MONEY instead, that he didn’t do for 12 years.

There's an odd imbalance in the money and the power.

Maguire demands that he is little or no worse off if he leaves, but he isn't it all responsible for his form decreasing his value so much

I mean most people are in agreement the value he is assigned in the books was way too high for him.
If he had been a 50m£ signing and let's say at 75% of the wages he is on, moving him for 20-30m wouldn't be as much of a problem and seems fairly in line for a player his age, position and stature.

He should be in trouble anyway. Surely the likes of Stones, Tomori or Ben White have shown in the past 12 months that they are at least at a similar level and realistically way above him?

He definitely should be in trouble, he's been an utter disaster for Utd for the last 2 years basically. Atrocious. If Southgate picked players purely on their club form he wouldn't have played since the Euro 2021 final.

He's generally been good for England though and Southgate has a core of favourites he likes to play regardless, Maguire is part of that list.

I really dont feel sorry for Maguire anymore... he has been getting booed by the fans, you would think that he would leave and carry on his career.

Instead, he is pissing the fans even more, I cannot see how he recovers his reputation with the fan base now.

Fair play to him, I wouldn't want to write off £7m to play for a smaller side.

Hopefully it can get sorted because he's not good enough for us and should be playing somewhere

Depends what he values more, money or career. Obviously money.

A move is his last opportunity to show he is still a somewhat level of player. His career is rock bottom now and for £7M he want to sit on the bench or worse for two years. He won't have a career left by the end of it and will be costing himself more in the long run. He'd be looking at the championship at best.

I hope you're right - but how are you so sure, have you got contacts in the game?

Yes, exactly.

We'll have some transfers that are amazing value, some that are terrible value, and plenty in between.

If Maguire's transfer ends up costing us money on his book value, we simply have to take the hit. The real problem was caused by Woodward's inability to negotiate down from Leicester's initial asking price. That forced our hand on the player contract, and now we are where we are.

I get that he's got a contract and would 'lose' out on a lot of money if he just took West Ham's offer, but it does feel incredibly cheeky fighting for that payout after his performances the last couple of seasons.

I can’t believe he doesn’t have the awareness to know what he’s setting himself up for - if not him then at least concerned family members will make him aware, surely.

If he has the nerve to hold out, why is he so meek on the pitch?

But it says the deal is already off…
It's off in the same way Jassim's bid for the club is off.

West Ham are registering their annoyance with the process without actually pulling out. The bid is simply in limbo at this stage. There's still plenty of time - and desire from all parties - to push this through.

He'll end up one of the least popular United players ever when he does eventually feck off.

I don't get why players are so desperate to keep their wages if the next move offers less.

- Is there really that much difference between earning £190k a week and £100k a week?
- You got a move to one of the world's best, hence the wage, but you have failed there. Therefore you don't deserve those wages.

Yes there is a massive difference between 190k and 100k a week. It's nearly double.

And that's the point of a contract. It provides both club and players a level of stability. Players can (and do) make life plans based on an expectation of a certain amount of money that comes in. Clubs can plan expenditure better knowing outflows are fixed (to some degree, bonuses and what not).

He may have failed from a sporting perspective but that isn't a good enough reason for him to unilaterally shaft himself. He's entitled to, or DESERVES every dime agreed in his contract in the time frame stipulated, as long as he abides by club rules. If we want him out that badly, we'll need to come up with the cash to make it make sense. And if he values being a United player that much to miss out on regular football, tough luck. Will teach us to be more wise in future acquisitions.

I think some of the comments from him thinking highly of himself while being the United-captain also showed he was really just detached from reality. Of course he has to say he has confidence and that he can lead and so on, but it's almost as if he's build up a facade/lie and now has started to believe it all. Then the cracks start to show when he plays and he gets nervous. He's just not meant for such a big stage. His football-level is not good enough to give him natural confidence at a club of United's size.

It's not like he has a reputation to care about. Fair play to him.

Very disappointing turn of events. It is in his best interests to leave the club and our best interests too. I’d be happy for the club to negotiate a severance pay, probs want less than 7m though.

The club do have the power to make his life difficult if he chooses to stay though. We can make sure that Harry will not play for England at the Euro’s by not selecting him for the match day squads, effectively ending his career here regardless of whether he is employed or not. If he still chooses to sit and take the money then he’s allowed to do that and that is on him, but would hope that his sporting pride would make him choose differently.

They actually have other targets

But it says the deal is already off…
Literally the first paragraph of the article:
"Harry Maguire’s £30m move to West Ham has collapsed after the club grew tired of waiting for the defender to agree his exit from Manchester United. Although there is a chance the deal could be revived, it is not going ahead at the moment."

Fair point, but it has been made clear to him he's 4th choice, so he has to hope for an injury crisis or up his levels significantly to even become 3rd choice at this point. If he's fine with that, great, but prepare for another season with a whopping 8 starts and see how that helps you.
