Because Gary Neville often doesn't know what he is talking about, but has enough self belief to repeat whatever uninformed nonsense he likes without fact checking.

He is like that old mate you don't have the heart to cut out of your life because he's a decent enough person deep down, is occasional good comic relief (even if he doesn't realise it) and you go way back, but you've basically realised is a whingebag drama queen who never shuts up. You'll go for a pint with him a couple of times a year and put it up with it, but if you met him for the first time today you probably wouldn't like him.

His takes are really awful at times, and I was curling up in embarrassment watching him playback his predictions for the season with Jamie every week on MNF last year as they were so wildly off the mark and yet he didn't have the self awareness to laugh at how bad they were or realise that everyone was laughing at him.

Any wisdom he has is through lived experience playing alongside and under the very best in the game for 15+ years. Anything he's coming up with himself might be rooted in this acquired knowledge, hence him occasionally talking sense, but whenever he starts to apply his own spin he often talks utter shit.

It's actually what he doesn't say. He rambles on about their injury issues and doesn't even mention our even worse issues. If you hand this injury crisis to any manager in world football for the length it has been given to Ten Hag, lets see how they do. He's overly negative about united and overly positive about Spurs. You would think they won 4-0 last night the way he goes on.

I do think our injury record definitely goes under reported and is almost mentioned as an afterthought, however credit has to be given to Ange for also going through a similar injury record whilst still managing to get his team to implement his tactics and style of play. Yeah they haven't won anything but in the context of both teams having injuries, one manager being there half a season the other 2 seasons, one being a bigger club, Ange is performing way above Ten Hag on pretty much every aspect. So I think he deserves to be recognised for that. At the end of the day the reality is if on that game you ask me who would you want United to play like, Ange's way or Ten Hag's, its hard for me to say Ten Hag right now.

It's annoying to listen too, I agree, but in fairness I think it's coming from a position as a fan. It's like the matchday thread in here, but on Sky (and censored a bit of course). If we were doing well it would probably be better, but its just the case that we've been (relative to his time here) pants since he's been on Sky. It does feel Neville forces it to be overly positive about our opposition, and especially the bigger teams, where you can imagine he'd love nothing more than to be making digs but he can't because of how we are.

I'm not sure if it's worse than people getting overly impressed every time 'Trent' or 'Mo' make a five yard pass, that's equally annoying from the other side.

It's apples and oranges in my opinion. Ange has came into a club that is structured in the correct way. Like any club, they can have the wrong manager in place, but Tottenham have a good structure and good ownership in place. On top of that, the expectations and pressures for Tottenham are far less than they are at United. In addition to this, Tottenham's injuries have only recently become extensive, we have been dealing with the crisis all season which makes it even more difficult to get going.

Question for you, do you think that if you swapped Ten Hag and Ange around we would be playing much better?

Good question, I think Ange would definitely be performing worse than he currently is at Spurs. However, I think Ange is performing above what is expected from him at spurs even given the structure and I think Ten Hag is currently performing worse than expected given the structure.

That was absolutely not the narrative over recent years though. Spurs fans wanted Levy out and pundits were calling for him to step down too iirc. Spurs recruitment, managerial appointments etc was all being criticised extensively. When Djed Spence came in people were saying Spurs are making decisions without Contes say so. Like come on, why are this forum constantly recreating situations and history to absolve Ten Hag of his disgraceful management this season.

The running of Spurs over the last decade vs United is night and day, I don't think anyone would dispute that.

You get the impression that pundits like Neville invested so much emotional energy defending Ole that he's been desperate to find any way possible to criticise the club/team/manager/players since Ole got the sack. That persistent negativity has been a real feature of his commentary this season and it's tedious as feck. You could put intermittent negativity down to normal fan frustrations in previous seasons but it feels much more like an agenda now.

Purely because Tottenham had relative success in the first part of that decade. And by success I don’t mean winning trophies but for them top 4 , CL final, great football etc.
But in the last 5 years where spurs have gone through lots of managers, bad signings and poor football, Levy has absolutely been crucified. You see things through a United scope so you may think it’s worse here but I assure you Spurs fans have been vitriolic towards him as much as we have with the glazers.

Neville was key to the RHS for years. He wasn't first choice for Manchester United for over a decade by accident.

There's a weird revisionism on his career, probably because he jokes about being terrible a lot. But he was very good, you don't play for that united side that many times if you're not a top player.
 
Gary was a fairly stellar RB back then. He was a great crosser and a good defender. Not necessarily the best but he was in the Top 10 in the world for his position at his peak.

He was a much better player than he personally thinks he was, he also knew his limitations, he wasn't the best RB in the world but he was a great team player, and he hated Scousers, we don't/didn't need more!
 
He talks complete bollocks these days, but he also owned, and deserved, his position in the starting 11 for 10 years.

He's a United great, as a footballer and no one who knows anything about United could argue with that.

I wish we had a full back as good and as consistent as Neville was these days. Probably one poor season in his prime (99-00) but for the rest up until his big injury he was a very solid full back. None of this 'good one year, crap or injured the next' we put up with now.
