Transfer Fees

How old was Zidane when Juve sold him? Just wondering as there hasn't been a huge transfer fee like that since, and I think he was probably a similar age to Henry / Ruud when he moved.

29 I think. Was the best player in the world and Madrid were in Galactico mode.

Thought it was a similar age. Wonder what Henry would have gone for if Real were still splashing the cash around. The money paid for him and Figo was ridiculous considering they were coming towards the end of their careers.

Real Madrid don't often buy players to make them into stars. They buy the finished article, and age is not the highest priority. Zidane had as many years to give as he gaved, and that's good enough for them. This is what many FM players out there don't understand. Big clubs don't focus that much on age, but on quality!

So you reckon if we'd have paid £30 million for Rio a few years back, he'd have won us the league ?.

Don't be fecking silly, you know as well as I do that with the amount of shit in your squad it would have taken more than just the addition of Rio Ferdinand for you to win the league.

Not really, how often have we bought 29 year+ players? Its not that often and usually when we are pretty desperate. Look at our recent signings, Carrick, Hargreaves, Nani, Vidic, Evra... all under 26 and with their best years ahead of them. Real were paying silly money for players who were already at their peak. Zidane was still a great player but Figo had maybe two years at his best for Real. They seem to be being more sensible with their fees now.

Crazy money paid by a crazy club. The whole setup with elections etc makes Madrid a very oddly run club IMO.

They aren't exactly pure young either, and if they don't performe within 1½ season, or in some cases 10 games, they're offloaded and won't be hanging around like Harry Kewell, Zenden and that sort of crap that Liverpool like having in their squad.

The £50 million that Fergie has splashed out recently. Has that come out of Glazer's pocket ?, or will it be heaped onto the club's debt ?.
Probably out the club profits/budget

I suppose when you can afford to slash out £30 million pounds on defenders, you'd expect a league title or two.

Still. He'd have gotten the chance the play in a couple of CL finals had he come to Anfield :p

Yeah but I think he would rather taken to winning the premier league a couple of times then not winning it at all.

It's actually quite hard to determine what is actually overpriced in a sense. Ferdinand cost us a lot of money but in my opinion is worth every penny. You lot scoffed at Chelsea paying 24million for Essien yet he is probaly worth more than that in todays market. Carrick cost close to 20million yet again, was instrumental in our season last season. That's why I don't really take any notice of transfer fees because if they're good enough they're cheap enough. :)

This is getting tedious, its already been proved we haven't spent much more than you since the beginning of the Premiership. And anyway when you are brilliant enough to win 9 premiership titles, you can afford to spend £30m on a defender.

Very much doubt it's come out of Glazer's pocket.

It wouldn't exactly be heaped onto the debt either. What worries is that there's no way for the fans to know how it affects our position in that sense

I think £30 million for Rio Ferdinand takes some beating when it comes to paying over the odds for a player :wenger:.

Good centre half, but £30 million for a defender FFS.

To think, some of you guys reckon Torres was overpriced

I'd have rather done that than spend around £20 million the same summer on Diouf, Diao and Cheyrou.

Are the scousers still claiming they have no money to compete with United, whilst spunking cash on 40 new players again?
